Well, I play A LOT of minecraft, Great game. Way back in like 1.7.3 (When i joined the craze) my minecraft was pretty slow, it lagged a lot and i mostly had to play on low settings. This was really annoying. I found out minecraft takes up a lot of ram so i started digging for mods that would speed up my FPS or something, None. After 1.8 it started to speed up, i could play on tiny-short render distance. Then i found the Optifine/mine mod, it was great but then, i have to wait for it to up date and i'd still get lag spikes even with the mod. 1.0.0 Oh boy, fun, not much lag. When 1.1 came along (WOOT) i could play on high settings!!! i didn't know why but w/e. Now with 1.2.3 it's back to square one, even more lag than before. My just is the Double high is taking up EVEN more RAM.
Are there any mods to speed up minecraft in general?
Why does minecraft use so much RAM?
How much RAM would be a good amount?
I'm on a laptop, should i get more RAM, better processor or just get a new computer?
If i should get more RAM, what kind should i get?
If i should get a better processor, what kind?
If i should get a new computer, any suggestions?(I've got mi eye on the gateway FX6860-EF10P)

One simply word: Java. There is a reason that yoour entire computer is not coded in Java, or most games for that matter, it is resource intensive. You will find that major games, Skyrim, Team Fortress 2 (oldish, but still very popular), Fallout, etc. Are coded in C++. The reason java is used for smaller, low budget games is that it is user friendly and easy to learn.
Extra information: The game also packs more than a little information into that world of yours too. If you spawn a new world and dont move, there is an area of 17x17 chunks loaded around you, each of which have 65.536 blocks (18,939,904 blocks total) each of which has 4 bits of information defining it, 75,759,616 bits, or 21 megabytes. And thats if you dont move anywhere. start running around and it has to load another 1.1 million blocks for every 16 blocks you move in any given direction.
My computer:
Dell XPS 435mt
Windows Vista 64 bit
Intel core i7 (4 physical, 8 virtual processors) 3.1GHz
Harddrive: 1TB (stock is 512 GB)
Ram: 6 GB
Video card: AMD Radeon 4850, 512 mb onboard ram.
I usually run 300-400 FPS unless Im doing something processor heavy, such as my 135 TNT cannon, while all of it is lit I usually run 100 FPS, and while detonating it will drop to 20.
Are there any mods to speed up FPS?
Try Optifine, never used it myself, but I've heard good things.

minecraft runs on ticks, it is the time it takes to do an action, speed those up and things go wonky. All you can do is make them run at the speed they are supposed to.
Why does minecraft use so much RAM?
See above.
How much RAM would be a good amount?
That depends on your budget and how much performace you want, the computer I am building now will be running 24 GB (this thing will -fly-) but as Phycozz said, 2 GB is plenty for him.
I'm on a laptop, should i get more RAM, better processor or just get a new computer?
Modifying a laptop is hard and expensive, due to the space restrictions, additionally, laptops have heat issues (cooling pads to go under them are big business) a full size tower case has plenty of room for air to move, and cooler processors run faster.
If i should get more RAM, what kind should i get?
I like Kingston Tech, good quality and good price (Amazon is currently having a sale on it, over 50% off.)
NOTE: the Ram that is listed on the side of the box is not everything, notice that I pointed out how much my video card had?
If i should get a better processor, what kind?
Intel forever, but they are expensive.
If i should get a new computer, any suggestions?(I've got mi eye on the gateway FX6860-EF10P)
As I said, I build my own, I would rather be able to know exactly what is in it and how it is built than rely on a factory clocked machine (more often than not, that means they slowed it down.)
For the most part, it's not the programming language (Java, C++) that matters, it's the form of execution. It's possible to compile Java programs into native machine code, and it's also possible to compile C++ programs for the Java VM.
Ways to speed up your FPS:
1. Download and install optifine mod which is available for nearly all minecraft versions even 1.4.2 or you can use magic launcher if you do not want to change with you bin file.
2.After installing it go to your game and click options then video setting and set everything to the lowest.
3.Set javaw.exe in your processes to a higher priority.
4.Download the latest drivers for your graphic card.
5.Use tune up utilities(Very famous program that speeds up the whole computer).

The SSP mod mainly, makes it run as a single player client. Its outdated however, (1.6.4) but it works fine.
