Ok this problem is seriously annoying me to death. I can play for about 5 mins and then my game freezes for about 5 seconds. My entire screen goes black, then it comes back on and a little message balloon in the corner says my video drivers have crashed and have successfully recovered. I have tried multiple things:
-upgrading to java 7
-downgrading to java 6.30
-downloading a new minecraft exe
-downgrading my minecraft version from 1.1 to 1.0
-downgrading minecraft from 1.1 to 1.8.1
-updating to the latest amd drivers
-downgrading to older amd drivers
-using modded amd drivers
-running minecraft in compatibilty mode for XPsp2, XPsp3, vista, vista sp1, vista sp2, and windows 7. all produce the same crash result, except for the vista ones. Those dont even let me run minecraft at all, they just produce an error report from java.
My video card is an ATI Radeon HD 5770, and minecraft is the only game that has this problem.
I would serisouly love to get minecraft running again, and start making videos of it again. If you can think of any other solution i would greatly appreciate it.
This used to happen to me on my old laptop on Windows XP. It was caused by severe overheating (my fan was on it's way out before I got this laptop). This may be the problem, on the other hand it may not. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
I have a similar machine to the one being listed as having a problem. I would run Technic and have the game crash after a few minutes. What solved the problem for me, and what has been working for 2 weeks now, was installing 32-bit Java on my 64-bit machine. I had been playing Technic on my laptop for some time until a program required me to install 64-bit Java. That's the same time my Minecraft would crash my display driver. Now, however, with the 32-bit Java, Minecraft and Technic run smoothly. I've recommended this fix to friends experiencing the same issue, and thier problems are resolved just as mine was.
I hope this helps, I haven't seen this solution posted in many other threads.
I have the same problem, only my video card is a RAIDON 9200 and I don't even get an error, so I don't know wether or not the computer crashes or something. My monitor turns off and my computer stops doing stuff. It only happened after I updated the drivers so Minecraft could actually run

I had this problem on a desktop and a laptop, both using ati cards and like cobalt warrior 19

I believe it to be a heat problem. The desktop is using an ATI Radeo 2600 pro, I don't know the exact model on the laptop, I think it is like a 9600. The desktop pc hasn't had the problem since I removed the multimedia card which was blocking the fan for the video card. The laptop didn't start having the problem until yesteday when I managed to disable the integrated video card and enable the dedicated GPU. The pc now runs 20°C cooler, I can play minecraft and finally managed to install and play Diablo 3.

Don't you worry about ___. Let me worry about ___!
I just ran the motherboard while monitoring the heat of the video card and it still crashed without overheating. Same error message as always, video card crashed and recovered. This problem does seem to me to be ati specific, not sure where to go from here.
