I think Minecraft, like every game, needs a list of cheats (for survival). Whether it be a keystroke, input on a sign, or even a menu in options, I think cheats would be a valuable addition to the game that would do the following:
1)Help people who want to hack but don't know how/want a simpler method
2)Attract/appeal to more casual gamers (like stumbleupon stumblers) who just want to try out the many features of the game without having to play it and build their inventory over time
3)Add another layer of playability once the player gets bored with the stock limitations of the game (cheats can add hours and hours of gameplay to an otherwise finished gaming experience)
4)Provide a backup means of gaining materials when you are simply desperate, even if only for 1 extra block
5)Make a somewhat new way of playing/game mode
6)Encourage even more complex building in survival/cooler levels to share with the community
7)Much more...
Possible cheats:
1)Gain any block free (for those times when you neeeeed all those track pieces but don't have the metal)
2)Motion changes (super speed, slowmo, hovering...)
3)Unlimited ammo mode (for bows, snowballs, and any other projectiles Notch adds)
4)Fast build/destroy mode
5)Spidermount/docile spider mode
6)No height/dig restriction
7)Fish mode (unlimited air)
8)Alternate textures
9)More possibilities...suggestions?
BEFORE YOU WHINE, note that this is intended to be SINGLE PLAYER ONLY. So what do you guys think?
Matt, seriously, stop trolling. So can you please shut the **** up and go troll the infdev forums about how much you want to get 10 bucks from your hobo house?
You guys are really high up on those pedestals of yours. I realize that this game is hackable, and I've done it, but since Minecraft is, and will always be, a java based internet game where the MAJORITY of its players are NOT delved deep into the community, it only makes sense for Notch to appeal to these players, especially when the game comes out of beta. Though we know how to do it, not everyone does, and not everyone wants to spend the time learning.
The point is, the goal of any game is to provide an easily accessible, fun game experience that can be picked up from the start, and requiring all new players to research and learn how to hack the game rather than providing a simple list of in-game shortcuts is nothing but closed-minded and detrimental to its public appeal. I know it makes you feel all good and proud to be an UBER HAXXOR (not really), but there's no point in being an uber ass about it.

1) No. Minecraft is meant to be a hard game, if the casual gamer doesn't like that, then he can go play Hello Kitty Island Adventure.
2)Spidermount sounds more like a feature than a cheat.
3)Alternate textures can be easily modded in, and there are tutorials if you bother to look.
1)That's debatable. I was the 13th person to buy this game, and Minecraft has always had a focus towards FREE, EASY creation, not being a "hard game." If it really was ONLY supposed to be a hard game, why would he have difficulty levels in the options menu? Hm? You got attitude problems, bro.
2) Cheats ARE features, which are just not incorporated into the core goal of the game. That's why you use them AFTER you have personally achieved that core component. They are meant to be fun and quirky, and I think spidermounts fit that bill. Anyways, that's why I asked for suggestions...
3) I know that....but modding is not exactly user-friendly, especially to someone who just stumbled upon this game and just wants to have fun without having to spend time messing with his files. A lot of the knowledge that we know (because we have been playing this a long time) about modding this game you are taking for granted, and even the tutorials are not completely clear for some people. You overestimate, and that is the most common problem with internet forum people like you, and you do it just to feel good about yourself.

Also, look up ''nbt edit''
I said only single player in the post, so yeah. And yes, I know but nbt edit is, but how would someone completely new to this game even know what to look up?
You guys gotta realize that just because WE know how to hack and mod, doesn't mean that the incoming player can figure it out, or that they want to even bother spending the time. If Notch really was as closed-minded and snobby as you, he would have never gotten this many purchases. The crux of building an indie game is about appealing to as wide an audience as possible, and welcoming anyone into the community. If that includes making mods a fun and easy thing to do once a new player gets bored with the limits of the standard gameplay, then there's no reason we shouldn't give it a try.
Our high pedestals? You're taking offense because people disagree with you, when, really, you should just accept it and move on, or start an argument.
But forums aren't the place for arguments, as that can get you banned, then you get no satisfaction from said argument.
Now, Notch has actually said, so I've heard, that the game is meant to be challenging. Even on easy if you don't pay attention for a few moments you can easily be taken out, and if you play on peaceful, well...
That's a different story, obviously.
And, yes, I have attitude problems, but you're not exactly the most polite person either, buddy. You got a problem with my attitude, contact a shrink. Have him fix me.
But if you do, you're paying.
Also, why should Notch focus on the free players? That gets him nothing, and, quite frankly, we're in the tail end of a recession. Economically sound ideas are higher priority than friendly ones.

Okay bud we get it, you're super cool and all, you were the 13th person to buy the game. Doesnt mean any of your ideas are better than anybody elses. I take it you and Notch are the best of buddies too eh? First of all, being a indev game doesnt justify the need for cheats. Cmon guys, I agree with Eylk, this game isnt supposed to be easy. If you do want it easy, go play Minecraft on Creative mode, its obviously where you belong.
Im not gonna stop saying this and i'll go to the grave with it. Hacks are for retards. Some 10 year old comes along and thinks hes big and mighty because he can run a client to hack for him, woop dee ****in doo dipshits Heres a little project for you. Go to Google and type "Minecraft", in the dropbox look at the first ten auto completes. Hacks, its right there. For the stupidest dipshit on the planet to access.
And TGT how do you think we're the snobby one here? Cheats are a stupid idea. I would think being the 13th person to buy the game you would have sped straight up Minecraft's easy learning curve but i guess not. Minecraft is too hard for you so you would like cheats. And while you're learning the ropes of this game TGT, why not shape up your attitude too?
Cheats, no. That ruins the point of survival mode.
As fir creative, I think Notch SHOULD make the player position more powerful. Builtin fly and speed ability would be nice, along with a port of all survival aspects as usable blocks/features. Of course, that will all come later when the game goes beta or higher.
@Cyrix: You really need to stop being such a pompous @$$hole and try to keep a cooler head. Hacked clients are not "bad" for use in creative, at least not in the sense that they ruin the game or other such BS. They're a tool to utilize the entire point of the game: building cool things.

Choose your words wisely.
Defend your words flexibly.
Change your words fittingly.
Let prejudice, popular opinion, and preconception be free from your judgments.
1) Think. Harder. Cheats do not necessarily make the game easier, because they are OPTIONAL. I'm not asking Notch to make the game easy or "not challenging." They add new features to the game once you are done with the challenging part, and are purely based on personal preference. YOU DONT HAVE TO USE THEM, SO THEY WILL NOT "RUIN" YOUR GAME. Why do you care if some noob wants to have his cake and eat it too? IN SINGLE PLAYER. Goodness, you act like a few extra optional features for people who don't feel like hacking are gonna eat your babies or something. Why are you so scared?
2) I was the 13th person to buy the game. Yes, that means that I have a general idea of what the goal of this game has been from the beginning, because I have been playing it ever since. NO, THAT DOES NOT MEAN I'M TRYING TO BE SUPER COOL. Sorry, that's not what I said or meant. I was supporting my point with real evidence.
3) Why should Notch focus on free players? Hmmmm....well I'm pretty sure none of us would even be here if it weren't for the FREE COPY of the game, which Notch KINDLY LET US USE so we could see what it was like. You have to start somewhere, "buddy," and for an indie game free players are just as important as anyone else: because they are your main public front.
4) No, the cheats are not for me. I never said I never ascended the learning curve, that is purely fictitious. Do I need cheats? No. Do I think they would be fun? Absolutely. Do I think anything fun in a game meant to be open-ended is a good idea? You bet your a** I do. So what is your argument? That it is too fun to add? That you would rather be a cool hacker? Sounds like the latter, because it makes you feel good. But it doesn't really work for new players, does it.
5) If I sound offensive/agressive, that's just my tendency when I am trying to defend myself. The original replies to this post were pretty crude, so my response was naturally not a happy one. Suggestions are not a list of things that MUST HAPPEN NOW OR ELSE. That's not how I worded it. I said "possible cheats," not "cheats that would have to be added." I asked for additional suggestions, not outright denials without any justification.
The argument of "You don't have to use it if you don't want to/Don't stop other people from using it just because you wouldn't" is... Somewhat valid. If you didn't want to use the cheat, you could pretend it wasn't there.
However, one thing about your "Making it more accessible to newbies/Not having to use hacks" point... Wouldn't you have to look up the cheats, the same way you'd have to look up the hacks to find them? Just a question.

You give your free players something to reel them in, then the buying players get the best of the game. That's what people in the game industry would call good business.
4) Wow. Someone's a tad egotistical that they feel the need to pick someone apart just for the simple reason they disagree with them. I think it's more that if someone isn't willing to put in the work, then why should anyone bother to help make the game easier for them?
I could be the first person to buy the game (which I wasn't), but unless I can fly over to Notches home, and read his mind, I can't know what the general point of the game will be.

I love how people on this forum act like total jackasses and doucebags when they see an idea they don't like, and even though they know they're wrong, they act all egotistical and shoot down the idea in mass numbers, so the OP is overwhelmed and can't fight back. Before opening their eyes and ears to listen to reason, too.
The general point of the game is to have fun. If people want cheats to do it, then so be it. If people don't, DON'T ENABLE THE CHEATS AND ACT LIKE THEY DON'T EXIST. The only possible way you can shoot down this idea logically and without response, is to say cheats are a no-no and can not be disabled. And they can be disabled in your options menu.
Also, Eylk, what you said in your previous post in point 2, yet not responding to what his first point is, just shows you weren't reading and comprehending that the OP said. Cheats aren't taking away challenges if you don't want them to. They are optional. Think, people, think
However, one thing about your "Making it more accessible to newbies/Not having to use hacks" point... Wouldn't you have to look up the cheats, the same way you'd have to look up the hacks to find them? Just a question.
Completely true, but I feel like looking up a simple list of cheats (which would likely be on the wiki) is still easier than messing with your files. And if the cheats were built into the option menu, then it would be even easier.

Just turn on peaceful mode.
If it's still hard after that...
Go back to Leapstart learning center. It's obviously more suited for you.
The point is this: why would Notch even HAVE a peaceful mode if he didn't care about non-hardcore players? Come on, show at least a little respect for logic and actually say something using evidence. I never said the cheats were to make the game easier, and they DONT make the game easier UNLESS YOU WANT THEM TO. Why would we not want to appeal to as many players as possible? Why would we be a**holes for no reason? Seems to me that's what you're doing. I'm not even saying that new players NEED cheats, I'm just saying that cheats would be fun, and would help make all of the additional game mechanics achieved with hacking more available to more people, so more people can enjoy the game. Whats wrong with happiness?

I agree. But can we not all agree that Notch is probably trying to appeal to everyone who wants to play his game? I just don't get why you guys don't like the idea of adding something so simple, something that would not even affect you didn't want it to, but would do all of the great things I listed in my original post. And you have yet to give me a good reason not to add new [[optional]] gameplay elements to a game designed to spur the imagination.
Eylk: this isn't a dictatorship, it's the internet. Why do you care if free players get a chance to try cheats? Does it really bother you that much? Are you insecure about it? Even if Notch restricted cheats to paid players, it would still be an all-around enjoyable addition. Like I said above, it's not only for free players, it's for anyone who wants new features without going the hacking route, and believe it or not...everyone is not like you. I just can't take you seriously because your original post was so unsupported and harsh. & as far as your #4...do people really have to "work" to earn an indie game? Doesn't sound like a good way to "reel them in," and doesn't sound like "good business." I'm sorry, but you just sound childish when you say that. The question is not why anyone should bother making it easier for free players, the question is why Notch would even bother MAKING the game for free players...and since he DOES make the game partially free, why does it matter how easy it is? Your argument is founded on the fact that cheats are "worth" something, and that fact is fundamentally against your stand against cheats existing. So, basically, you think cheats would be too nice to give to free players, so we might as well not give them to anybody. oooook.

It is fun watching the long posts rise as I scroll down through the needless arguements, and I don't like this suggestion because even I think that minecraft should be hard.
Why the fk does everyone think: minecraft == difficulty?
ITS NOT!

Completely true, but I feel like looking up a simple list of cheats (which would likely be on the wiki) is still easier than messing with your files. And if the cheats were built into the option menu, then it would be even easier.
So, basically, you think cheats would be too nice to give to free players, so we might as well not give them to anybody. oooook.
Thank you for actually reading what I wrote and actually thinking about it with an actual brain. I was beginning to worry about the state of this forum.

ITS NOT!
The game is about having fun in creative ways, not just about surviving and what not, those are game modes designed to let player loose, not restrain them.
Well there you go.
(once, of course, it is updated with all the fancy new stuff which I believe is going to happen)
---> vede claimed Notch said this (and it is awesome).
