Many, if not, all Minecraft users know that when you craft leather armor, you can color it. However, this armor isn't even close to being the strongest and not very appealing when it's colored. That is why I suggest making armor such as iron and gold armor to have color customization. Iron armor appears white in-game, which makes it a perfect canvas for any type of colorful design or symbol that appeals to the user. But coloring the iron and/or gold armor shouldn't be as simple as it is now with leather armor. Instead, it would be similar to putting a design on a banner, as pictured below:
Below, say your opinion on this topic, whether iron and gold armor should have the ability to be customized or not.

Hasn't something similar been suggested already? As for customizing armor it really doesn't interest me and I don't see many players actually using this. No Support. Sorry if this was too harsh or offended you.
Leather armor being dyeable is the one positive thing it has over other armors. Copying it to better armors just punches that uniqueness right in the face. Though adding a small pattern in the armor wouldn't be a bad add, just not the color stuff.

I would like this if you could put a small black 'emblem' on the front/back/both sides of your armor, like a creeper face, or mojang logo, but no colors. Basically what Cerroz said.

You make it sound like leather being dyeable somehow balances it with the others. The game isn't somehow healthier because a weak armour type is 'unique'. If you're going to add customisation like this go the whole way, the only punch in the face here would be giving half the options (colour) to one armour type and half the options (pattern) to another. That would be ridiculous.

In terms of uniqueness, yes that's where the balance comes in. It's just about leather armor having something going for it. How would dyeing solid metal armor even work? It can run into the problem of other players not knowing what kind of armor you're wearing because the color is throwing it off. Sure, the coloring could be done in a way to reduce confusion, but the idea itself isn't necessary.
I don't understand that color/pattern point. Does one need the other? I'm just saying the concept of a pattern overall is better than coloring. Though I'm gonna admit, at gunpoint, I'd probably not have the patterns in the game either. Did you think I meant having non-colored patterns only?

I guess everyone's already said what I was going to, leather armor being dyeable is what was added to make it more awesome than it was to keep a balance.
Because if people want armour customisation, you can't give that to them by making every individual method exclusive. It's like a character creation system in a game, but on a male character you can only change skin colour and on a female you can only change hair colour. A rudimentary example, but you get the idea. Seems a bit silly, no? I don't see a reason to keep them exclusive.

How would dyeing solid metal armor even work?
How would dyeing a sheep which then regrows wool of the colour you dyed even work?

No, I fully understood what you meant. I just don't see the point in armour customisation if you're going to limit it a bit for every different type of armour. You stop people getting the armour designs they want, which is the whole point of the suggestion, for the sake of every armour type getting to be a special little snowflake.
K so I say YEAAAAAAHH but not colouring just maybe some custom engravings or something?? That would be awesome. I think the only real reason people like leather armour is because it is dyeable, so colouring the other ones would just ruin the whole point. Also I would LOVE to have a full set of diamond armour so yea i'm pretty much with Cerroz on this one.
Why is the gameplay experience more fun when leather has something going for it?
I never said anything about "more fun". It's pretty simple, iron and diamond armor are stronger but can't be dyed. Leather armor is weaker but can be dyed. It's just a good trade-off.
How would dyeing a sheep which then regrows wool of the colour you dyed even work?

So why is it that we haven't been able to dye iron and diamond armor? Did Mojang "forget" to put that in? The reason I don't push away the patterns as well as the coloring is because the patterns wouldn't run into the coloring-armor-hides-what-type-of-armor-it-really-is problem.

Mojang did it that way so it must be the best way, let's not even question it or have a constructive discussion on why arguments for and against it may be valid?
Come on, this is called the SUGGESTIONS section. We suggest things that Mojang haven't put in. It's pretty much the whole underlying idea of the forum. Don't ask me what the super amazing valid reason for not being able to dye iron and diamond is, tell me what it is and we're all sorted.

We need trade-offs because balance. If we copy-paste dyeing to iron and diamond, then what is leather armor even good for anymore? Because then we'd have stronger armor that can also be dyed. That's just cheap.

I swear you almost always add more to my words than what was there. Seriously, this is pretty simple. All it is, is reading between the lines. For example, why would Mojang ever add fighting villagers if they went through the effort of adding an entirely new mob - the Iron Golem? Why would Mojang make apple trees when they clearly made apples have a not-too-common chance to spawn from one type of leaf block?
My statement was not me sucking up to Mojang, it was an actual question I was hoping you'd answer. Why would they make leather dyeable, and then later go "Alright fellas, let's make the stronger armors have the same thing!"?

You know what else is cheap? Trying to justify leather armor's existence by saying it can be dyed. Who's going to say "I only have leather armor that will break quickly, but, hey, it's dyed green. Now I can totally PVP/fight the ender dragon/Wither!"
Very few people will sacrifice a major defensive advantage for a minor aesthetic one. Leather armor needs to have a different kind of bonus to justify using it.
As for the suggestion, I like it. Adding both emblems and colors would truly allow everyone, who truly cares about it, like me, to look unique. And those who don't care about dying their stuff won't really care if it's implemented.

I'll just throw out that it's renewable.
But if you care so much about balancing armour, you should be diverting your efforts to rescuing iron armour from it's imbalance with diamond, honestly, because that's much worse. Even if every armour could be dyed, leather would still have something going for it.

I wasn't being snooty, I actually was curious to how that worked. Including what parts of the armor if not the whole thing. The same reason they took splash potions which allow you to give potion effects to other players and went "Alright fellas, let's make the arrows have the same thing!"
Well it was the combat update, though I never agreed with those arrow potions myself. But the method of obtaining them isn't a cakewalk, so there's some balance there.

You're right, I don't know myself. But still, if they wanted to make iron and diamond dyeable that bad they would've done so from the start when they did it with leather. And before anyone mentions it, yes, I can't predict the future and know if Mojang will or won't add it. If that happens, I'll come back to this thread, apologize and kiss everyone on the mouth.

'Cause I don't care
Fall in, fall out
Gone without a doubt, help me
I can't take the blame
They don't feel the shame
It's a madhouse
Or so they claim
It's a madhouse
Oh, am I insane?
My fears behind me, what can I do
My dreams haunt my sleep at night
Oh no, won't learn their lesson, white fills my eyes
And only then they see the light

Yes, thank you, I think I figured that part out. I was concerned about which parts of the armor were colored if not all. I already said this.
Yeah, that guy in the avatar is me. I'm *that* strange. It happens. Sometimes people act like that. Just go with it. I can offer help with suggestions even before you post them - NOT make your suggestions - but help you with them.

All of it could be colored, maybe only some. Perhaps like that one fellow said before; have it be like the banners.
White coats to bind me, out of control
I live alone inside my mind
World of confusion, air filled with noise
Who says that my life's such a crime?
Trapped in this nightmare
I wish I'd wake
As my whole life begins to shake
four walls surround me
an empty gaze
I can't find my way out of this maze
'Cause I don't care
Fall in, fall out
Gone without a doubt, help me
I can't take the blame
They don't feel the shame
It's a madhouse
Or so they claim
It's a madhouse
Oh, am I insane?
My fears behind me, what can I do
My dreams haunt my sleep at night
Oh no, won't learn their lesson, white fills my eyes
And only then they see the light
