(I posted this before...Though I kept editing it and people who have seen it previously were not updated so I decided to re-post it. I have tried my best to think this through to avoid another edit but it seems to be done. Hope this is not breaking a rule.)
We all want day/night sensors. That is why we keep inventing them.
There are already two ways to do this:
1. By villagers; But when it rains, they fail
2. By Grass; But it takes time for grass to regrow/die
So my idea is:
The Redstone Clock
Recipe
What does it do?
This is a new redstone-triggering block that is placed on a side of a solid block. Then when triggering, it will create a redstone current that activates redstone.
How to use it?
1. Place it on a side of a block
2. Right-click on it to set alarm
3. A GUI pops up
4. Turn the dial then click "Finish" when you are satisfied with the time set
5. Connect the block it is on to a redstone wiring
Set Alarm Gui
Function
(alarm set to: close to midnight)
1. Morning
2. Daytime
3. Nighttime
4. Morning again
Notes: Dragging will rotate the dial and will set the time. It needs a block to stay on just like all other Redstone blocks. Has a hitbox.
Are there disadvantages?
Yes, Because;
-Crafting one would mean using up Gold for the clock and if you will use the gold version, some Iron in case you would want the Iron, and some redstone.
-Any operator could just set time and make the clock skip the time.
Does it have multiple uses?
Yes, it does.
1. You can display clocks without having to use Item Frames since it is probably going to be overused. And it will display time still.
2. You can connect it to a note block music to play songs at a certain time
3. You can use this in adventure maps when you want a certain room to only open during day/sunset
How long does the pulse last?
As long as the clock is in the position of alarm. You can attach it to memory cells to increase duration.
Other versions (might add more)
Yes, I know you guys want different frames since this is for atheistic use as well. So here are the other versions (Note: Only metallic blocks are redstone-triggering, the others just produce sound when alarm reaches set time)
1. Wooden Frame (Not Redstone Triggering) (Notes: -Different plank types give different colors, but using two different types wont work -Produces a wooden sound close to the note block version)
Now you can just put a pocket watch in an item frame on a wall. Then your clock already exists.
You completely missed the point of this.
I like this, but I think it should just look like the clock item stuck to the side of a block, similar to the stone Button. Rightclicking it would open up the GUI (either the circular timer or just a horizontal slider) instead of pressing it.
Would it read the actual day/night cycle, or just read the light level? Reading the light level would be even more appropriate for a horizontal slider. Slide it to 15 for daylight and 4 for nighttime assuming there are no non-transparent blocks above it.

To me, the frame isn't the point of this item. The point is to have a redstone signal come out when the light reaches certain parameters.
Since we already have item frames coming out in a couple weeks, having an item in a separate type of frame just sounds redundant and adds extra complexity. Perhaps you could place the Redstone Clock in an Item Frame and then right-click the item frame to open the GUI.

Theres nothing wrong with aethistic uses. And I am sure ice mountain bases with icicles would go well with the blue clock design. Though it might need a different design
And also, i dont think itwould be easy. The item frame is not a block ifi remember correctly. It is an entity. Timed redstone would probably be hard.

The aesthetic use would be duplicating Item Frames so they wouldn't add in a different mechanism just for one item.
And even though it is an entity, it should still be able to produce a redstone signal somehow. Minecarts touching detector rails and such would have similar code. And there is already a light level detection system (for spawning monsters and growing mushrooms, etc) that could be used. There are also existing interactions with entities (entering and exiting a minecart, etc), so that would just need to be tied to a simple GUI.
The problem I see here is with it just generating pulses. Since chunks aren't always loaded when the day/night changes, any mechanisms relying on it would fail to operate until the next cycle after the chunk they're in is loaded.
Having it powered during the day and non-powered at night would provide a much more predictable state for any mechanism that uses it. Turning the change from day to night into a pulse, if that's what you want, can be done with a simple edge detector..

Yeah. And villagers opening doors, And Arrows triggering Wooden Buttons, and Mobs triggering Pressure Plates... But how would a regular solid block be given power DIRECTLY by the entity to give to a redstone mechanism? That is why I think we should need a new block.
Yay something that is NOT a lunar or solar panel! I support this, and maybe you can reverse the day and night thing so at day time it will be on and night it will be off. How about powering it with a lever?

Thanks man
Oh wow guess I am not the only one. Does that mean support then?
Support
I am ninja'd far too often.
Yeah but this one also triggers redstone when alarm set is reached by the time of day
Thanks for your positive response
