Some people claim that nether can be easy for what is supposed to be: a fierce cave-like world full of lava of dangers. Are you scared? probably not. Well i have a little suggestion that can give a little spice to the nether. Saying this im not pretending to make nether a living hell, just turn the temperature a little bit.
You probably read the title and thought this guys is nuts... well i am in my own way but please bear with me. Playing on the nether i always thought why this strange guys living in such aggressive world seem to be so peaceful. The first times i've been in the nether i felt tempted to hit one of them. BIG MISTAKE: zombie pigmen started raining literally from everywhere but my suggestion is not to make them all instantly go berserk when they detect a player..
What i suggest is to spawn peaceful pigmen as always (1 of each 4 pigmen will be aggressive), but also mixed up with them some pigmen that are aggresive when they detect a player so they would spawn apparently undetected between the others and when the players gets near them they charge as if you hit them you agro a peaceful zombie pigmen. Of course attacking this berzerk version of our peaceful fellows is not going to cause all the others to go nuts but the player must be aware and not hit a peaceful one to unleash hell.
The stats of this version of the pigmen would be the same as the current peaceful conterparts but they wont drop gold, they might drop quartz instead and they wont get the soulsand slowdown. I was thinking about maybe adding a mirrored skin for agrresive pigmen (instead of having the zombie-side on the left, they would have it on the right but that would make them easier to spot) or maybe just make the pigmen have "variable skin" as some aesthetic change.
Please feel free to give feedback and comment.
Thanks for your time.
Posters Suggestions and inspirations (from poster´s feedback)
Raffilcagon: Tweaking the percentage or fraction of pigmen that spawn agrresive, its been changed to 25% of the group of mobs that spawn.
Inspired by SVGK : Holding a golden item in the nether would cause the "greedy" nature of the zombie pigmen to come out and run to get their precious items off your hands (they get aggressive)
Walt_Disney_II (and Bad_Jim): Good question he made about aggresive pigmen and eggs. The current zombie pigman egg would have a 25% chance of spawning aggro pigmen. To make them spawn aggresive already for adventure maps or custom maps they can use the summon command instead,
On one hand, we have a destructive weapon in a bad way. This would make players on edge of our piggy 'friends' in the nether, possibly attacking the innocent ones. HOWEVER, on the other hand, the nether is supposed to be that kind of place. A fright could lie behind every corner, a threat waiting to kill you for no real reason. The main thing bugging me is the 1/3. Could it be 1/4 or 1/5? If that would be too uncommon, I understand.
I'll give it a 50% personally.

I guess part of the idea is to make them be not feel "comfortable" on the nether and walk carefully between our piggy mates, make them feel uneasy, nervous somehow, although its not a big big difficulty addittion, but still a little "buff).About the rate i agree with you and change the op post but might need some tweaking.
hmm, i dunno, the nether should be living hell, and the pigmen have no reason to be automatically agressive, think about it, the nether is hell, that is unquestionable because of F3, hell usually is a place of torturing evil souls, living pigmen were a planned addition to the game, they use golden swords which implies a greedy nature, they are rotting with some vile green stuff on them, they fill most of the nether....
so they must be the tortured souls of pigmen, and thus they are neutral, they are too concerned with their own suffering to care about you.
now, as for gameplay-wise, it's a decent idea, but the game system makes it hard to hit the wrong enemy by accident, and not alerting other pigmen by attacking it is a bad inconsistency, and it's hardly a good fix, pigmen are mostly fine the way they are, they just need a bit more variety, like not always holding gold swords, maybe gold hoes one time, another time a gold shovel, sometimes they could be empty-handed.
the mobs that need a big buff is the ghasts and magma cubes, and the nether itself should be inherently dangerous just by being there, and it needs more variety in it, like new mobs and blocks.
and i'm fairly sure this has been suggested before.
Making it hard to see which zombie pigmen is agressive and which not is intended, that's supossed to be part of the "challenge". I've seen other post suggesting to add other "pedestrian" mobs but i tought that the fact of them being "camouflated" among the peaceful pigmen might give some challenge using something that is mostly coded already and might be simple to introduce.
Well i dont consider it so much an unconsistency, if you attack them they attack you, some of them could simply notice you and attack you even if they are holding their precious gold but you gave me an idea, more as aesthetic: making them agresive (peaceful included) if the player holds a gold item (includes bars and nuggets) in his hand, similar to enderman when you hold an enderpearl in the end.
The problem of them holding hoes is that doesnt makes much sense... but shovels and other stuff why not? May i add it to the O.P
I Ran a search for this and didn't saw anything about it so idk...
Support, as long as the coding enables agressive Pigzombies to not anger every other Pigman in the area.
I look that this way: those zombies pigmen were aggressive to you from start and the others are mainly ignoring you as long as you dont hurt them, so if you hurt them they will retaliate, but since the others are directly disposed to attack they just stay on "their own business"
It happens to me sometimes that i hit them by accident trying to do something, its hard but it happens specially because the idling nature of the zombie pigmen tend to make them be on your way.
When you hold an enderpearl on the end, the endermen might get agressive to you, so i was thinking why not to make the same thing if you hold a golden item you would call the pigmen's attention and they will try to get the gold from you.
All pigmen attacking you when you defending yourself from the aggressive Z.P would be a disaster and probably too much. The logic is that the aggressive Z.P are attacking you so you are only defending yourself, why the others would interfere? If a friend of mine is drunk on a bar and starts a fight it is his problem, i would try to stop them from beating each other but i wont go and bit the other guy just because he went berserk. As long as te other dudes friend doesnt gets in the fight i will try to avoid it not to make it worse. The word "minecraft" and logic doesnt seems to fit very well, and if it does the expression has a very thin line.
I dont get the hoes because on the nether the only existent "crops" are the nether wart and it doesnt needs a hoe in any moment, you talked about minecraft logic... i dont get it.
Yes, originally 1 of each 3 pigmen would be agressive (33.3%) now i change it to 1/4 so thats 25%.
the percentage could be now dependant on groups of them. how many are in a certain area, the more that are agressive. and im guessing now aggressive pigmen now spawn from the egg?
the percentage could be now dependant on groups of them. how many are in a certain area, the more that are agressive. and im guessing now aggressive pigmen now spawn from the egg?
I tought the percentage as group related, not overall spawning.
The egg question is actually a good one! Id say theres a 25% chance of spawning them with a pigmen egg, they wont have a separate egg for them. The pigmen now can be spawned with command blocks with /summon and making them peacful or agressive as for examples you can do with wolves. Cant remember exactly what the command is but im sure its possible.
In order to make other peoples answer better, i suggest you to answer after you quote them following the parragraf order so the order of you answer can be understood. Anyways...
You don't know if you can hit them by accident or not, that's speculation, i accidentally hit the pigmen many times trying to hit other mobs or mine, for example...
Well, if they don't, i guess that part of the pigmen zombie might be a good addition.
Even with rotten brains they have some logic, they get aggresive when you attack their friends.
Well, if they come from the overworld they why not, they could carry hoes, swords, picks, shovels and whatnot.
Seperate eggs would be better. Most aggressive mobs are not aggressive toward creative players, so it would be hard to tell them apart. Creative players should get to decide whether they make a bunch of passive pigmen, aggressive ones or a mix of the two.
But this way i cannot directly quote what you said because what yo usaid is inside my quote so when i quote you it wont come out which is bothering me to answer.
It looks like you looking for the cats fifth leg (its an expression we use). As i said, they wont attack you because you just defending yourself. Getting attacked by peacefull pigmen when you attack a pigmen that is attacking you already can be considered an inconsistency too, i just see that you are going around something looking the complicated side of it. If it bothers you, then that behavior can be sustained when you get attacked by an aggro zombie pigman and if you attack it in front of peacefull pigmen that didnt saw they where primaly aggresive to you they will attack, but other than that, id say no, making them aggresive if you attack an aggro zombie doesnt seems logic to me either so we are square.
As i answered before there's no way they would make them all aggressive if you attack an agro, it would be crazy. When you attack a peaceful zombie pigmen the stream of mobs attacking you can become endless. No need to make experiments because i experienced that behavior in the past and i think its nonsense.
About the alleged "inconsistency" its just that: alleged, its a matter of point of you, and even if it is, i see that there's good reasons to keep it in order to maintain some balance on the idea.
the inconsistency is a fact, do the experiment, that is how science works, you have a hypothesis, you test it and come to a conclusion, the fact is, there would be a blatant inconsistency, and inconsistency is always a bad thing in any medium, whether it be film, books or video games, the behavior isn't nonsense, it's the way it was intended to be.
as i said, there are better ways to make the nether hard without resorting to inconsistent behaviors on a mob that needs no change, the pigmen are just about the only mob in the entire goddamned game that they have balanced to perfection, everything else, blazes, zombies, magma cubes, wither, snow golems, everything, zombie pigmen are balanced to perfection as they are, ghasts and magma cubes are the nether mobs that need to be harder, not these guys.
The fact that pigmen are neutral on sight makes them the easiest mob in the nether and as you said in another post theres a low chance that you hit them, making them "less harder". As i said it might happen from time to time but its a low chance, with the suggestion i made i want to increase that chance at least a little bit.
Nether mob difficulty
Wither Skelletons > Blazes > Ghasts > Magma > Pigmen
Why takes those mobs that have some difficulty (maybe not they arent the hardest mobs) instead of trying to make the mobs that have less difficulty and try to buff em up a little bit?
wrong, ghasts are fully incapable of doing anything, i can stand in place for several minutes with each shot missing by quite a bit, and when their shots do remotely aim right, they either do very little damage because of the ghast being a long distance away, or, more often, you can reflect their shot, magma cubes are slow, and due to their behavior of jumping, you can knock them back with each attack, so they can't even hurt you half the time, the wither effect is incredibly slow to work, and wither skeletons are rare.
mobs are very weirdly balanced when you put their abilities in practice.
As i stated before, this inconsistency is minor and its for balance sake, otherwise this addition would make nether impossible, you would ALWAYS have all the zombie pigmen coming for you "day in and day out".
The difficulty is a concept that might vary for each person, depending on many factors. A newcomer would have a bad time in the nether in the beginning, he probably wont know he doesn't has to attack peaceful zombies or don't know he can reflect ghast balls, but after he gets the feeling of it it would be different, that's you perception, the perception of an experienced player. Most of "difficulty buffs" doesnt has newcomers in mind, on this one i tried to.
I think it needs new mobs, not aggressive pigs. sorry, 1/8 support. good idea though!
My idea is to "work with what we have" rather than add more mobs. If you think it, the nether is kinda well populated already in terms of hostile mobs. I would go for improvement rather than addition. Thanks for your comment
