I looked this up on search but all I found were a bunch of eery fanfics, so here goes.
There have been many occasions where players are faced with a multitude of mobs coming their way, and even instances where its nearly impossible to make it out without being seriously hurt.
For that matter, I have thought of a new type of weapon to introduce to the game: Claws. or CLose Attack Weapon.
Claws can be extremely useful in caves where a player has little or no room to duck and dodge an attack,
Here's why; Claws have an extremely short range, but can allow a player to engage a multitude of mobs at once.
For instance, Imagine yourself in a small cavern with little room to run around, as you mine away at whatever ore catches your fancy, you hear the familiar grumble of a zombie. You turn around and are surprised to see five zombies coming at you from the other end of the narrow passageway. Berating yourself for not bringing some decent food, you pull out a pair of stone claws you managed to craft before your crazed obsession to mine carried you away.
As the zombies approach, you swing at them with the semi-sharp points and knock several of them back, having a much shorter range, you have to time your strikes perfectly before the zombies get close enough to club you with their rotting limbs. Before too long, you gather the measly feathers the zombies somehow drop, and make your way back to the surface.
As you can see, claws are a reasonable weapon with short range, and the ability to strike more than one mob at once makes them invaluable when spelunking.
tl;dr, Claws are a short range defensive weapon half as strong as a sword with a knack of striking more than one mob at once and knocking them back a little to keep them at bay.
Give me your opinions on this, but please refrain from posting unnecessarily rude comments that only serve to undermine this thread.

Do you like space games? I like space games. You should check out Starsector!
Longer reach in a small room? Would you fight off zombies with a staff (5-7 feet long) in a 10x10ft room? You'd barely have room to swing it, and don't even ask about momentum. Plus, they are heavier and slower to hit with.

Seems Wasteful, Other Reasonable Devices Serve (SWORDS).
Honestly, especially in SMP, I need LONGER RANGE. Lag is sufficient to where the 3 meters I'm given is not nearly sufficient to avoid taking damage. While SSP would find this a welcome change, SMP would prove a difficult terrain to cover with this.

going that direction, wouldn't waving a stick be just as effective? what more is a staff than a long stick?
[]
Where = material
and
= leather
How so?
It has a longer reach.
The claws are meant for extreme close quarters combat, a staff simply wouldn't be the best choice in a confined area.
With claws...
= player with CLAW
= very, very dead zombie
