I'm not sure if this has been suggested yet, but since I don't see it nearby, I think I'll post it and give it a shot.
Mob Hordes & Swarms
Whats the reason for these so called 'Mob Hordes'?
A problem I know most players of minecraft have is that they don't find it challenging enough, and, lets face it, once you build a fortress of solitude, you don't have to worry much about zombies or skeletons. Mob Hordes will try to create a more challenging game without adding an over powered mob.
Alright, so, what are Mob Hordes?
To put it in a Tl:Dr version, Mob Hordes are basically a large, large group of mobs that are more intellegent then your average mob.
What makes a Horde of Zombies any different then a group of Zombies?
Well, a Horde, to begin with, consists of around 20-30 of a single mob, and a 'Horde Leader'. They will spawn only in low light conditions, no matter what kind of mob they are. They are more agressive then your average mobs, and will attack any mob they see. So if there is a Horde of Zombies, if they find another zombie that is not part of the horde, they will instantly attack it. Another thing members of Hordes can do is flip switchs and push buttons, so your gates blocked with redstone secruity are no longer safe. They can also open doors and climb ladders, so you can't hide in your bedroom, write down better safe then sorry, and close your door, expecting to be safe. And they also have an increased seeing distance, from the normal 30 to 150. Hordes will also stay close together, but will ocassionally split into smaller group in order to cover more ground should the situation call for it.
What was that 'Hoard Leader' you talked about earlier?
A horde leader is a mob that is of the same species of the rest of the horde, but has a few things different. It is a different color then regular mobs, so you can tell the difference. For example, a Horde Leader Creeper could be Red, and a Horde Leader Skeleton could be Black. They can also do a little more damage then your average mob, and have a little more health then your average mob. They do have a bonus, however. If you defeat a Horde Leader, you get twice the drop then you normally would. So, when you kill a zombie, you might get a feather. But when you kill a Horde Leader Zombie, you get 2 feathers.

I LOVE this idea. Not as a noob player who thinks any idea is good, but as an experienced player looking for more of a challenge. My ideas on this:
Horde leader:
Distinctive traits:
1.5 times as big as the rest
Black skin and red eyes
Drop:
Drops x3 along with your drop idea on death
Horde leader:
Distinctive traits:
Shoots Flaming arrows
maybe a red color?
Drop:
Bow x 1
arrows x 3-6
Horde Leader:
Distinctive Traits:
Maybe a Blue or green body
2 ideas here, Can either jump really high and far, or fade into the darkness and appear later/teleport.
Drops:
String x 5-8
Web x 2-5
For all of you who don't know, a web is something you can find in your terrain.png, and notch is working on it. You can get it through toomanyitems, but no way in game yet.
Horde Leader: (If any)
Distinctive traits:
2x as tall as the rest
A brown or red color
Same idea of ghasts shooting fireballs, but with tnt.
Huge explosion
Drops:
x 5-7 (ofcourse)
Maybe when killed turns into 3 new but regular creepers?
I really like this idea, though
Alright, I think I understand that. But what are swarms?
A swarm is similar to a Horde, but consists of passive animals, and can't open doors or redstone objects, and will not attack you. Besides that, all the principles of Hordes apply to Swarms.
What mobs are hordes and what ones are swarms?
Heres an easy list to help with this.
*Both mobs will spawn as swarms, but when provoked will turn into a horde, and exhibit all the traits of one.
Woah, all these hordes seem dangerous, and I'm new to minecraft, I could barely survive the first night, let alone attempt to survive a horde of slimes!
Don't worry, Hordes will only spawn on the hard difficulty, since their meant to be a challenge to experianced players, but not a menace to new players. Swarms will spawn in all difficulties 'Both' catagory mobs will spawn on hard.
So, any specifics on how these hordes spawn?
Hordes will spawn rather rarely, in low light conditions, with an increased chance of spawing during a thunderstorm. But there still rare. It is almost impossible for their to be two hordes on the screen, and it is impossible for there to be more then 2 on the screen. Swarms and both will spawn in high light conditions, on grass(Or water for the squid), with an increased chance of spawning if it is not raining.
Alright, so theres my idea. Any thoughts or opinions on it?
No. This would be ridiculous. Spider Jockey or Creeper hordes? God no.
Thats why you would have to use increased planning in building your fort. Maybe a drawbridge that can only be opened from the inside, or a moat, or a secret passageway? Or a lava flow to destroy the hoard, or cook up the pig swarm to bacon. This would allow advanced players to put their arcitecture and fighting skills to the test to keep their work and themselves safe. And if you don;t want to deal with the hoards, you can just change your difficulty.
i like the idea of horde but and horde would just over powerd like you found a horde and shoot 20 arrows at you in one go would just be ridiculous and a horde of creepers would be just like a NUKE going off.
Since everyone pretty much seems to agree with it, I took the Creeper and Spider Jockey off the list, but I want the opinion of more people before I take the Skeleton off the list.

Don't worry, Mob Hordes can't destroy blocks. That would be ridiculous and would discourage clever architecture and encourage either running or hacking diamond armor and weapons to take a horde out, which would go against the Mob Horde's main reason. And, Mob hordes arn't meant for an average player. They're meant for experianced players with great ideas. For example, I saw this one video on youtube where a guy created a system that could flood the enterence to his castle with lava. And that video partially inspired the Hordes and Swarms idea. Because in minecraft right now, all that system would be good for is taking out 1, 2, 3 mobs. So hopfully, mob hordes will encourage advanced players to create security systems like that to take out mob hordes.
@Doktrpepper I think that your ideas for Horde leaders are awesome! It would definatly be a great way to get the web block! Could you please create some more, and mind if I put them on the top post, because you horde leader ideas are awesome!?

@1.337/88.9
Actually, I've always thought it would be on a difficulty, because if you look at the dificulties, the biggest real jump is between peaceful and easy. The others just basically make enimies do more damage then normal. And people have found ways to make drawbridges, check youtube.
@PugRme
I'm pretty sure this dosn't exist yet, since I've done a search and looked on the already posted topics. if you have the link to this already posted topic though,
@Doktrpepper
Sweet, I've added them, thanks!

Your ideas great, but yours adds a new mobs, while mine just adds a new behavior to the current ones. And when I was building a mob spawner trap, when I had to look inside it, I probably had 50 mobs or so in there, (I couldn't really tell besides the sounds and arrows shot) and I barely noticed that much lag on my computer.

and a spider jockey as leader?
of course creeper hordes are to powerfull!
there was a mentioning of siege mode, in some nights the moon might turn red and a gigantic zombie horde would try to run over your castle
I'm always playing on hard ... and with my 5 blocks thick walls of my fortress ... im think i'm good ..
In my opoion, having a ghast army would be overpowered too.(just think about it)

Already exist.
