If you are unfamiliar with Zork, I'll give you a run down.
Grues are monsters that you never see that kill you outright if you are in the dark for an extended period of time. Lighting a match or torch or being anywhere, where there's at least a minimal amount of light, is enough to keep the dreaded beast at bay. When it you're going to be eaten soon, the text says "It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue." and if you take one more step in darkness, it says "You have been eaten by a Grue".
According to Zork, "The grue is a sinister, lurking presence in the dark places of the earth. Its favorite diet is adventurers, but its insatiable appetite is tempered by its fear of light. No grue has ever been seen by the light of day, and few have survived its fearsome jaws to tell the tale."
How I think this would work in Minecraft:
If you walk around for too long in a cave AT ZERO LIGHT LEVEL, you'll hear a horrible noise. Something deeply terrifying. Failing to step into light or setting down a torch after 5 seconds would cause the Grue to grab you from behind, pull you backwards, and then kill you.
It would be easy to implement because it would need no model or texture.
What do you guys think? I really want this to be in SMP. XD
Isn't moonlight usually enough to stop grues from happening?
I have no idea what grue is so idk.
Doesn't matter tho. It would make it very hard to explore dark cave because you would have to place torches a lot more and be careful when you go into darkness with the idea of lighting it up. And I don't wanna auto die if I choose to go some wear dark, and even more importantly I wanna go some where dark if I choose too.
On my first point most people spend there first night is small enclosed hut.
So you think the Zork company has rights to a creature, that you can't see, that kills you in pitch black light levels? It could be a boogyman, disembodied demon, or ghost of Michael Jackson. It's too much of a broad idea for one person or group of people to own.
We kind of already have a grue (Creepers...) They don't "instantly eat you" but if you are unaware and in a dark cave, you're probably going to die to one that gets behind you (or sometimes even in front).

Sorry, but I hate this idea.

To read the haiku that you

Just carry some torches with you. As MC Frontalot says: "I wonder who's fault it could be? With not a torch or a match in your inventory!"

Honestly, I've been waiting almost my entire MC Suggestion life to see somebody post a suggestion on Grues.
*applauds*
And anyways, this may seem good.
By the way, you have a high chance of encountering a grue in the dark. Not each time you step in the darkness.
When you hear that a Grue is approaching, lay down a torch. He'll go away and do something else.
