After getting a wheat farm going, it doesn't take long to end up with an easy surplus of grass seeds. In some ways, I think it would make a lot more sense if chickens ate those instead of wheat for breeding purposes. And then I'd be able to do something with that easy surplus instead of having it take up room or being discarded.
And since chickens currently breed pretty fast, it might make sense to have something like a 1/3 chance of a chicken becoming "amourous" after being fed grass seed. (Of course a chicken would keep eating until it gets to the "amourous" state, it still wouldn't take long considering how much extra seed you can colllect.)
Does anyone think that would slow down chicken farming too much, or does that seem like a reasonable idea?
I support this, I have tons of seeds and some chickens all around my survival house and I'd like to start being able to manage all of those without wasting them.

This actually sounds like a pretty good idea. Supported.
I don't support the lowered chances of love mode, though. It seems like it would make chicken breeding more annoying and resource-intensive.

Chickens are so darn easy to breed though. Unlike other mobs, they have two ways of reproducing. Ever throw an egg? Even though eggs have relatively small odds, I can breed chickens on eggs alone once I get about 6 chickens or so.
Also if you make a real farm, not just 2 or 3 patches of wheat, but an actual field... It's way too easy to get a surplus. Seems you get about 4 seeds for every wheat harvested. Replant, and you still have 3 seeds per wheat bundle. If it's not instant-love every time you feed a chicken, then it's makes much more sense to get that kind of surplus. (The odds I'm giving still sound very good, considering the "value" of the seeds.) Otherwise, the only other way to burn through the extra is to literally toss it in the lava.
I'm just suggesting altering one thing in order to have already existing things make a bit more sense, such that they seem balanced.
It would be cool if you could place seeds on non-farmland blocks, and chickens would eat them off of the ground. Then you could make a trail of seeds that chickens would follow and eat. Having 6 stacks of seeds from 18 farmland blocks (less when I was growing melons and pumpkins), I would like seeds to have another use. Maybe not for breeding, but maybe seeds could be used to lure them, restore their health, (decrease their egg standard egg timer from every 5 minutes to 7.5 minutes) and if they eat more seeds their egg timer starts ending closer to every 3 minutes or so, or maybe is 5 minutes again, but has a high chance to occur early.

It’s the unpleasantness of the system that keeps me out.
I’d rather be in, in a good system. That’s where my discontent comes from:
being forced to choose to stay outside.
My advice: Just keep movin’ straight ahead.
Every now and then you find yourself in a different place."

I think this is an excellent idea. Personally, I think all mobs need different methods of feeding, because breeding has become so difficult for me now that I have several sheep of different colours for my wool farm! I had to eventually separate the pigs/cows and the sheep, which was REALLY difficult when wheat makes them all bumrush you.
If you make a gap in your fence with a block over it, only pigs and chickens can get through, because of height. Then you can lure them through with wheat. Sheep will try to get through, but cannot.

Notch look at this!
