Sorry if this has already been posted. I tried searching and found nothing related to this.
As we all know, the current slab system only allows us to place a slab of the same material on top of it, to make a full block of that material.
For those who are confused by what I just said, see the following example:
Placing two wooden slabs vertically makes a wood plank block, etc.
Basically my idea is this:
Being obsessed with minecarts and tracks lately, I am finding it would be really useful to be able to place minecart tracks, or other blocks, directly on half-slab blocks. It would be really nice in simulating a raised railbed without raising it the full height of a block.
If others like this idea, maybe it could be extended to other items, such as torches, fences, etc. There have been multiple times when I wish I could place blocks on half-slabs.
With the latest version of Minecraft, I know we can place half-slabs from the top down, like upside down stairs, if placed on a ceiling block. This is awesome, but unfortunately we cant place track on the top. I know people have asked for minecart bridges, etc. A series of wooden half-slabs would make a pretty convincing minecart bridge, if only we could place track on it.
Another effect of this would be the slope of track. If we could place track on slabs, a new slope-transition to normal height blocks would need to be created, to connect track. if we make a "staircase" of slabs, we could make a track system with a shallow grade, instead of the steep 45 degree grade we get from placing track currently. This would make powering carts uphill not only a bit more realistic, but I think it would look a heck of a lot better.
Thoughts?
Edit:
Another idea I just thought of:
Powered rails push carts too fast to really enjoy the ride. Furnace carts push at a very reasonable rate for scenic minecart rides. Unfortunately furnace carts can't push a cart with a player uphill because of the steep grade and the weight of the player. I propose making furnce carts able to push player-carts uphill, but only for this new grade of track.
Nah it would be to hard to code and stuff just stick with blocks
Maybe for you it would be too hard to code. I bet Jeb could knock out the code for this in less then an hour, considering all the code is already there. All he has to do is add it to slab blocks. I think it would take longer to get the image of the track to display correctly for the new height transition.

I'm trying to make a "rope bridge" with a track on it, that would go from tree to tree in a jungle biome. To make that look as realistic as possible, slabs are my best bet. But alas I have to resort to upside-down stairs with full block increments instead of half. This would be a killer feature.
An interesting way to get aeound the problem: Make the rail block take up the block above the lower slab, but visually lower the rail so it appears to lie on the slab. This could also work for torches, carpet, buttons, etc.
Temporary solution: Use cobblestone slabs to raise the blocks around rail beds half a block.

*aghast* ONE WORD POST! OH NOES!
OT: Anyway, good ideas! I think this idea is AWESOME and I REALLY CANNOT THINK OF ANY IMPROVEMENTS THAT DO NOT INVOLVE DINOSAURS.

My suggestions: Enhancements - Throwable Fire Charges - On Phantoms and Elytra. Also check out The Minecraftian Language. This signature is not here to waste your space.
