Hi guys, some suggestions I always thought about making the world feel more alive..
Insects
Something as simple as pesky flies/mosquitoes you hear buzzing around you while you're chopping down a tree, and some bees (maybe tiny blocks). Bees could provide honey, and jar of honey?
Cooking Mechanic
I realized putting 3 wheat to make bread is a bit easy.. When it's a lot more work in real life.. It'd be nice to have a 'stove' mechanic, where you want to be nice to fellow multi-playing friends and make a cake with some eggs, sugar, milk, wheat->flour, or some bread with wheat -> flour, eggs.. Or maybe some more veggies, and you can make a pizza? Maybe a honey covered apple on a stick? Get some good exp that way (this ties into selling below, as well)
Birds/Strays
Maybe a bird to go fly on a tree, then fly away. Just having some wildlife in the game. Maybe some more cats and dogs near villages (strays).. Maybe being able to arrow down some air game? (shoot birds in the air for feathers and meat), or slice them down and get some feathers that way.
Better Selling Mechanic
Wouldn't it be nice to sell things to villagers but instead of you going to them, they go to you? Wouldn't it be great if you put up some cool stuff for sale, and have a store, and see nearby villagers coming in to buy your wares? (see Booming Ecosystem below)
Land Ownership
By seeing a highlighted border or some other visual marking, you can see what parts of land you wish to own. Within this land you cannot break a block with a person that is not aligned with you, or on your team (or some other mechanic). This can be done by placing a flag with your picture on it on the ground, and it'll reserve a certain block of space for you. You should be able to have 1-2 you start with. This can be expanded with many fun things (can also tie into "Booming Ecosystem" below)
Booming Ecosystem
Let's say you don't have many friends to play with, yet you want your singleplayer world to feel alive? Wouldn't it be great to have your single player open to anyone that wants to join? Maybe buy some things they can use for their game? Like an awesome sword they can buy in your shop? Maybe these players that come in cannot destroy blocks, but buy things.
You can also perhaps implement a 'global market', and have emeralds more important.. Like if you quickly need 5 blocks of obsidian, and have emerald but would rather not take a huge amount of time getting a diamond pickaxe first and such if you have the emeralds already. Then the person that was selling them would get rewarded. Makes the game feel a lot bigger.
Improved Experience System
Let's face it.. We've all been in the spot of losing our exp, and that is the ONLY mechanic used to make really cool stuff. It doesn't feel great, makes you want to quit the game after a stupid death. This leads me to 2 separate sub-ideas:
Skills
How about levelling up, and when you get to certain 'milestones' (levels?) you can buy a skill, say, 'Woodsman lv1' that allows you to chop wood a bit faster. Maybe a skill that says 'Miner lv1', allows you to use a pickaxe better? 'Swordsman lv1' so you can use a sword for more damage, and quicker 'reload' times. You could also do the 'the more you use' approach, and if you use the pickaxe a lot it feels like you're at least getting better with it. It feels a lot like the Minecraft world feels static.. No progression. You don't feel you getting better at anything, instead just 'buying' things with your experience (that can be lost by dying). This can lead to some nice 'pseudo classics' like Blacksmith, etc.
Enchanting
With the idea above with skills, you could also expand to things like enchanting. Instead of having completely random books, it's nice to know you can 'save up' for an enchantment.. For example. Wouldn't it be nice to have some enchanter skills so you can embue a weapon with a specific enchantment? Then sell that to someone like the global market? The better you are as an enchanter (the more you use the skill or upgrade it) the better your equips can be. This could lead to a pseudo class like 'Enchanter' etc.
In closing, thank you very much for reading my ideas. Just think it would add a lot more replay value for those that wish to have a good sandboxed world with progression playing in survival.
