This is working like redstone dust, but as a block.
Although, the redstone block we know today will change its name to Powered redstone block.
This idea can be extremely useful to transfer redstone pulses up/down easily and compactly.
The crafting recipe of the block will be 4 redstone dust in a shape of a cube.
The powered redstone block will change its crafting recipe to a redstone torch in the middle and redstone dust around it.
I think this block is going to be super useful if this block will make the way into the game, at so much things.
For example: a line of vertical pistons facing sideways, you will be able to activate by just putting those toggleable redstone blocks next the pistons and all these pistons will work properly without any delay.
To get the blocks activated, you need to put a redstone dust next to it and it will do its job.
The cons in the toggleable redstone blocks are the fact that they have a signal strength like redstone dust has.
This means that every 15 blocks you will need to stop your line of blocks, and place a repeater.
If your blocks are vertical, you will need to take the output from the block by redstone repeater, and try to connect it to another line of vertical toggleable redstone blocks.
This is pointless and over complicated to have a different variation of the redstone block. Mojang adds things that offer a plethora of solutions to problems and you only listed one application for your idea and it's already possible to power a vertical line of pistons simultaneously.
It isn't. If u were messing around with redstone for long enough u will know its impossible to do it without slimeblocks. This is helpful for so much circuits i can think of. For example piston doors, pistons as a floor and a way to get them activated, and so much other circuits.
The ability to transmit RS a signal vertically both with a continuous signal (not possible with using slimeblocks to move blocks) and more compactly than either any of the stair/tower models or the slime block column would be useful.
The main concern I see is whether it would be too useful… part of the reason RS is so popular is the need for ingenuity in design; if everything is easy, this vanishes.
Yea or Nay on this point is something I expect will be a matter of personal taste, with more expensive and more resricted options for implementation producing the most support.
With that in mind…
A secondary concern is that this proposal would remove the utility of the RS block [RSB] as a way of storing/transporting RS dust [RSD]; the proposed Powered RS Block [PRSB] (crafted from 1 RS torch and 8 RS dust) does not sound like it is intended to be recrafted into RSD.
Leaving the RSB recipe and behavior alone would avoid this (as well as avoiding the need for three block types: Powered/Storage&Transport/VerticalRedStoneWire [VRSW]).
It would also avoid the confusion of assigning new function to the old name.
With the 9x RSD form of the RSB stable, there remains the issue of the VRSW recipe and behavior.
4x RSD does result in a "block" that is significantly more expensive than RSD, but the crafting recipe looks like a reduced version of the standard RSB.
Substituting 3x RSD in a verticle line between 6x stone [only] slabs or blocks would provide a visual reference to its purpose and add complexity while keeping the 'price' resonably high. This woudl also mean acrafting table was required; eliminating teh ability to craft these "on the fly"
Similarly (like most other RS components) VRSW sould not be uncraftable into its parts.
In terms of behavior, VRSW could be powered from any of its six faces (it would be a full cube transparent solid block as are pistons, RSB, and observers with blast resistance and hardness as a piston), but would deliver (strong) power only up or down.
A column could thus be tapped at any level by inserting a normal solid block (eg cobble) which would power any adjacent RSD, but the VRSW column could not be tapped at two successive levels by this method (the powered cobble could not itself power another cobble).
I would prefer not to add a vertical repeater [due to the 'main concern' cited above].
