Chargers would fly above lava in the Nether, they have fire particles that follow them when they move. There'd be 10 in each chunk.
They can see a player from 20 blocks away, and when they see one, they'd quickly charge at their direction, if the Charger hits a block or a player, it'll explode. The explosion is half the size of a creeper's and it can set blocks on fire.
If a Charger is hit while charging, it will fly 10 blocks away and try to attack again.
They have 15 health points and drop 0-1 fire charge when killed.
Why add this? To add make the Nether more challenging, of course. Building a bridge across the lava is pretty easy if you're careful, but this new mob could destroy it.
It also adds a way to get the fire charges without having to craft them.
Not a bad idea. I love the idea but it might be a bit more OP of it blowing up. It would not be fair if it just knocks the player of a bridge causing the player to fall and die. Even worse, they get all their stuff burnt in the lava. I think it would be better if the Mob is really slow, then it may be alright
So basically a creeper? Without exploding?
I like this mob, but I think it should have more stuff on its design, like wings or something to give it a reason for flying.

Really? 500% unoriginal.
I've seen a mod with a nether bull before.
ABSOLUTELY NO SUPPORT!
Sorry sorry sorry. The image didn't load. Support.
No support. The mob's only purpose is to aggravate the player. We already have ghasts in the nether to blow us up. This mob is frustrating and drops nothing worth trying to kill it.
I would support if it just shoots towards where the player is at the time and the player can escape the blast radius easily and just let the thing suicide itself.
So I would be able to ignite these like a creeper with flint and steel?
You would have to get close to them in order to defeat them, but then how would you defeat them?
Also unlike creepers... what if they catch fire? would they also explode? or no?
because a creeper doesn't explode when it is cought on fire. ignited and on fire are two different things technically.
one starts a fuse at a certain stage and the other renders fire.
I don't think anything would happen if they catch on fire, because Nether mobs are immune to heat. You can defeat them in any way you defeat any mob. And about the flint and still thing...I'll think about it, I'll also think about your other suggestions.

Does 10 per chunk sound good? I don't want it to be too common but I also don't want it to be too rare.
That sounds pretty good. Especially given the mix between tunnels and open areas, and the height of one chunk. They're common enough to be a problem but not enough to be obnoxious.
I would suggest putting these details in your original post, so that people just coming in can see them.

If you like threads about mobs, then my threads are mainly about that: http://www.minecraftforum.net/members/AGmantheAG/threads
Like a Blaze?
I think it is perfectly fine without wings. Not everything needs to make 100% perfect sense.
System.out.err("Nope");
Give them like 5 health but explosion does 25 damage and lights you and all mobs around on fire. Make them make a very distinct noise.

Not a bad idea I support this because i love the texture maybe the corners are cut off a little?
I like this concept. How fast does it fly through the air?

Normally it's as fast as a regular mob, but it'll become 1.5 times faster when charging.

The signature is a lost art.
Okay, that's fair. How rare are they?

uhhh... what?
Partial support, since it seems kinda op yet, it would be fun to fight as long as it does no serious damage to the landscape or player when in armor.
So I would be able to ignite these like a creeper with flint and steel?
Should I be imagining these as a sort of gargoyle type shape with a thin mid section and larger upper body like a flying gorilla?
Would be cool if its wings deflected arrows imo, but thats just me. Like tough skin or something.

Making the flint and steel more useful.

if they are shaped like gargoyles they could wield pitchforks.
edit:
they could also not like endermen and chase them down.
since endermens natural biome is the void and not the nether.
I'm on the fence. partial support.
I could imagine something sneaking up on me, charging at me, knocking me into the air, then flying away coming back and then charging to blow up.
because if it initially charged at you to blow up, it wouldn't give you any time to run away if one snuck up on you...
Can it change directions?
I would support if it just shoots towards where the player is at the time and the player can escape the blast radius easily and just let the thing suicide itself.
Ghasts and pigmen are already annoying enough in the nether, we don't need even more aggravating mobs.

Nope, it can't change directions.
I made it myself with Techne.
Personally I think the nether is already pretty full. It wouldn't hurt, but it doesn't add much.

My avatar is not made by ThePiDay, but I'm too lazy to remove this link so it can stay he

I'm a fan. Although, maybe no fire to the explosions, because it'd just make a huge mess. Support
