I was just in my chest room looking at my surplus (again) and I realized that I have a lot of blaze Rods. Lets face it you can only build so many ender chests, brewing stands, and strength potions, so I was wondering what else to do with them. Then I realized the name is BLAZE ROD. Like FIRE rod, of fire Stick, and that would be a torch. The more I thought about this the better it sounded. Enable placing blaze rods on the tops and sides of blocks as if they were torches, but have a different texture and a greater light level.
Well Blaze don't even emit light themselves.. If they were made of blaze rods, shouldn't they illuminate? Even when they catch fire they make no light.
Anyway, if this was added I think blaze rods should emit less light than a torch.
This does sound like an interesting little idea. But there are somethings that I should point out.
Would blaze rods then be treated as entities? How much light level would blaze rods give off? If blaze rods could give off light, couldn't Blazes do the same? etc.

So I was thinking that torches weren't that bright, but apparently they are, so same brightness as a torch.Thanks to EnderCreaper168 I didn't know that you could use blaze rods as fuel.
Saying that because blazes give off no light, neither should the rods is a poor argument. There is no clear reason that blazes give off no light and as far as anyone can tell they probably should.
I like the idea of using blaze rods as torches, and I also really want to see items with a light level higher than 15. It shouldn't be difficult to program into the game, and I think it should have been done long ago. Simple: an object with a light level above 15 lights blocks accordingly, but a block above light level 15 merely displays as if it were just at 15. This allows for more expensive light sources to spread light further, allowing you to illuminate your home adequately without lightsource pollution, even if you wouldn't spend so much just to light up caves.
If light sources could go above 15, I'd opt for the blaze rod to go to a humble 18, making it a significant upgrade for the torch and better able to shed light all the way across a ravine or wide cave segment. Then I'd suggest redstone lamps have a light level of 25, making them ideal for home lighting but due to their complexity in setting up, perhaps not the best thing for caves. I might bring a few with me anyway, however, so I could place one in the center of a cavern to light it up. It's not so hard to just place multiple torches around the outside, though.
I like the idea, I think that a suitable crafting recipe would be a blaze rod with a tripwire hook on either side, that way its not just a floating stick. I would also like it if they were able to be turned by right clicking, to what degree though is debatable. A 90 degree turn seems fine to me. It does need to have the ability to be placed on all sides of a block, I agree with that. Would redstone compatibility be reasonable, to turn them on or off? Im kind leaning toward no because its a stick of fire.
Maybe it should have a special property... maybe mobs would avoid the light emitted by it, like they are scared of blazes. That would be useful for driving mobs out of your base, or making them walk a certain path for grinders.
It shouldn't be difficult to program into the game, and I think it should have been done long ago.
There's actually a very good reason why they haven't added it yet (from the MCP source):
/**
* is a temporary list of blocks and light values used when updating light levels. Holds up to 32x32x32 blocks (the
* maximum influence of a light source.) Every element is a packed bit value: 0000000000LLLLzzzzzzyyyyyyxxxxxx. The
* 4-bit L is a light level used when darkening blocks. 6-bit numbers x, y and z represent the block's offset from
* the original block, plus 32 (i.e. value of 31 would mean a -1 offset
*/
32x32x32 blocks is 32,768 blocks! That's half an entire chunk's worth of blocks being checked every time a light update occurs! And this amount increases by the cube of the distance - that's a factor of 8 just to double the maximum range, meaning the game would lag that much more (conversely, dynamic lighting that actually produces real light (block light, not a visual effect like night vision) wouldn't be much of an issue if it used a reduced range, say 16x16x16 as it would be 8 times faster).
NB: This is taken from 1.8, basically the same as in older versions from a quick glance (I guess that some of the lag I get in 1.8 is due to more aggressive lighting of new chunks to eliminate block spots; this also caused problems in 1.7).
Basically, they would need to completely rewrite the lighting engine to accommodate brighter/longer-ranged light sources without affecting performance.
As for Blaze rods as light sources, I don't see why not, and even making them emit a light level of 15 wouldn't make torches obsolete since you only gain a couple blocks of separation between light sources and glowstone (etc) can be placed in the ceiling, floor, or walls (note that the highest light level next to glowstone is 14 as it is only 15 in the block itself, which is solid; this means that a torch on a wall is equivalent to glowstone in the wall, so Blaze rods would be a bit better here unless you don't want a torch sticking out. Also, glowstone works under water while Blaze rods certainly shouldn't - Blazes are even damaged by water). I see this as a minor upgrade more than anything else, you also need to get to the Nether before you can get Blaze rods; by comparison, using an Ender chest as a backpack is more OP.
An interesting idea, but I'd rather use up some cheap coal and sticks for torches than something than can make me some wicked awesome potions. Sure, partial support. I thought this was gonna be some half-baked dynamic lighting idea. I'm glad it wasn't.

I think, the blaze rods shouldn't emit more light than torch. And I like the idea of being them placeable on ceilings.
Why not?

Minecraft is not medieval-themed!!! As a matter of fact, it doesn't have a set time. And when and WHY did putting reponses in the quote, especially long ones, become a trend in the Suggestions? It's rather inconvenient, mainly since the OP has to gather your quote up manually. Avatar made by Endergirl!
Blaze rods are literally the essence of fire. They deserve more light for what they are.
Yeah, I agree.

Torches give off a light level of 14, and the maximum is 15 so the difference wouldn't be very noticed.
Anyway it's an interesting concept so I will give you half support.

I want
ocean content(thanks Möjang!),nether biomes(again thanks!!), and savanna passive mobs (meerkats incoming!?).Nothing wrong with this. Sure, Blazes themselves don't emit light, but who cares? You should care when they implement dynamic/mobile lighting.
I could imagine having to make a bracket, like with stone or iron to hold it, and you could place it just like a torch.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

I second that!
And I might add (even though it is not strongly related), when thrown on fire, it should engulf surroundings with more fire.

I already have a double chest of strength potions and the blaze rods are piling up from wither hunting and I have no real use for them.
