Hello again, I found this 2-3 year old thread, and thought of putting it back into action, in 1.9.
Stick types are very simple, actually. just use the "color:" tag in the "display:" tag. 2 acacia wood planks, 4 sticks with the color of acacia. Mix the different planks for cool outcomes. That way, you don't need 3,000,000 new items. This can apply to tools/weapons, too.
The "color:" tag can bring unlimited possibilities to map makers. That "Master Sword" color you always wanted for the sword's base is now available. "Blaze"-colored items are now available. BAM! As soon as it is implemented (and figured out, of course), millions would use it. And enough people would thank you for correct colors of sticks.
It kinda works for the combat update. The Beautiful Combat Update. BIG letters there:
THE BEAUTIFUL COMBAT UPDATE!

I am a computer Enderman and I am very smart. But my user isn't.
We have resource packs. In fact, in 1.9 there's an option to allow different textures to the same item with different data/damage values. The new sticks sound like a possibility, but applying any color to any item doesn't seem very useful.
Sadly, I'm gonna have to say "nah". These are just sticks, and I don't think they deserve that kind of development and attention. Changing a couple pixel colors on the handle of a sword or tool doesn't seem all that great.

Yeah, that guy in the avatar is me. I'm *that* strange. It happens. Sometimes people act like that. Just go with it. I can offer help with suggestions even before you post them - NOT make your suggestions - but help you with them.
That is not a good excuse not to implement this suggestion
You have a point. To reword my criticism, I would say that adding the NBT color tags to EVERY SINGLE ITEM sounds kind of silly. Besides, I don't see too many people using this addition since they would use texture packs that change the appearance of the item, not just color, giving the tags little to no purpose.

Anyways, I support the NBT tags, but not sticks colored like the wooden planks. It isn't a continuity mistake, because the stick is a much different color than wood, so getting those sticks from any type of wood is reasonable. It still fits.
Partial Support
I know what you mean, sticks don't have to be like the planks, like all other wood creations. Makes the creative inventory small. But if you wanted to have a birch stick on a pickaxe for a better look (on survival), this would be a good and minor way to do so. Makes it have swag. Or a dark oak stick for a darker look. Sticks could have a good color and is a slightly cool addition, as you can tell which region other players might have come from (and gotten the sticks from). Also more creative for maps.
This doesn't interfere with the crafting, because a stick is a stick. It isn't specially named "Birch Stick".
Besides, Mojang needs an excuse for adding this. They can't just add this in without a survival mode purpose. But Mojang probably wouldn't look at Minecraft Forums because of all the other "silly" suggestions. They'd look at reddit. If this goes further with more than 50 supporters (usually never happens with me :P) and at least 75% of yes than no (also usually never happens with me :P), then I will post this on reddit or email them (whatever their email is. they never respond)

SURPRISE!!!!
Oh great, now I have to get a new computer.
I support NBT colored sticks but not wood plank colored sticks. We don't need to make sticks from different trees unstackable.
