I've seen several suggestions where the suggester says something like "Add adamantine ore thats a little rarer than redstone and you make it into new armor and tools! ... What do you mean what else? Thats it. New armor and tools." So I'd like to suggest a material that actually can't be made into tools or armor and has actually creative uses. Unfortunately, I don't know how to add screen shots of custom crafting recipes, so text will have to do. This is my first suggestion, so please tell me all the formatting stuff I've done wrong.
Ardent Ore is found in the Nether at a rate slightly rarer than redstone is in the over world. It tends to be found near lava pools. It constantly radiates heat, so it would be stupid to make it into armor. Breaking it causes it to disintegrate into 1-4 pieces of ardent dust, modified by fortune of course. In addition, mining a naturally generated ore has a chance to spawn either a blaze or a small magma cube. explode with a random amount of power, but around the strength of a ghast fireball.
If you surround an iron ingot a piece of Nether Quartz with four pieces of ardent dust, you get one Ardent Quartz, which is used for many of the crafting recipes.
If you make a compass but replace the iron with ardent quartz, it makes a fiery compass, which points towards the closest Nether Fortress while in the Nether or the closest Nether Portal while in the over world. Nether portal if you are in the Nether or the Over world. If you're in the end, it just spins randomly like a normal compass does in the Nether.
Edit - Combining a piece of ardent dust with some magma cream and an ender pearl makes an eye of flame. It works like a Nether variant of an eye of ender. Throwing it causes it to travel towards the closest Nether Fortress.
You can make an ardent firestarter by either combining a current flint and steel with 4 ardent dust or by combining a flint with a piece of ardent quartz. This works like a normal flint and steel, but lights a larger radius on fire. creates special white fire. White fire acts a little differently from normal fire. It burns blocks and entities for a much shorter time but also spreads much faster, so it creates a ring shape of expanding fire. Can be quite powerful, but you can also catch yourself on fire rather easily.
Combining nine pieces of ardent quartz makes an ardent block, which can be used for decoration. However, it constantly acts as though it is constantly on fire, damaging entities and lighting other nearby flammables on fire.
You can make a bucket out of ardent quartz, which makes an ardent bucket. It can hold two blocks of lava in it but in exchange cannot hold any water. Trying to pick up water will just destroy the block, which can be useful for clearing out ponds.
Using the comparator recipe but placing a full durability ardent firestarter at the bottom middle will make a sparker, which is a block similar to a comparator or repeater. When the back of it is powered, it will output to one of the other three sides randomly. It doesn't output to sides that aren't connected to anything though. I feel like Minecraft really needs an actual randomizer. Right now, to make one it takes about a 4x4x3 space. Sometimes that space just isn't available for compact mechanisms.
Edit- Combining ardent dust with blaze powder creates 4 flame sparks. Flame sparks work as lighting, but not like you might think. They can be placed as free floating light sources that are very difficult to see. They start out as as flame spark:7. This means that the spark will emit light level 7 by default. However, you can surround a piece of glowstone with flame sparks to increase the light level they produce when placed by one, up to a maximum of 15. The same thing can be done with redstone to lower the light level they produce, down to a minimum of 1. Or, glow/red stone blocks can be used to make crafting it faster. I always thought there should be a way to control the light level of large buildings easier.
Combining ardent dust and an awkward potion makes a shining potion. When drunk, it increases the detection radius for all mobs, making it easier for them to see you. In addition, it causes them to prioritize attacking you over other targets in their detection radius. This might seem useless, and it kinda is for survival. However, it allows for one person to be the "tank" if playing in multiplayer. You can also splash it onto wolves and iron golems to turn them into meat shields. Also, this is useful for map makers to encourage teamwork. Or, they can use it for defend NPC X type maps. This effect doesn't cause mobs that are normally neutral to each other to suddenly start attacking each other.
Corrupting the effect with a fermented spider eye creates an obscurity potion, which does the opposite of a shining potion. It reduces the detection radius for mobs and makes them more likely to attack other targets.
Finally, I have a few ideas for random, other uses.
Ardent dust can fuel furnaces, providing 310 items worth of burn time.
Or, the dust can fuel furnace mine carts, causing them to go very fast for a few seconds.
Ardent dust can be placed like redstone. It conducts power, but only transfers from and to repeaters or other pieces of ardent dust. It also has a tendency to light nearby things on fire when powered. So it can either be used for compact mechanisms or for traps.
Full Support: I Love the Idea! Especially the potion, I could imagine my self throwing that potion on someone on a hardcore server so all the mobs go after 'em. Keep up the good work!
I agree, full support. I love the idea of new functions, not just new types of armor and weapons. However, a sword made out of this could be made to catch mobs on fire without being considered enchanted.

First off: I love this idea and I support it. But I do see 2 errors on your part regarding the potions.
In every other potion, its parts to make it are 100% renewable. Ardent Dust is not. You need some way to make it renewable (make it a rare drop of pigmen or something).
Also, its default effect is negative unless in a splash, with its corrupt being positive when drunk. To match all other potions it should make a obsuricty potion by default, then can be corrupted into a shining potion.
Other than the 2 things that would break the pattern of all the other potions, I support.

Ever had something (or somebody) on your railroad that you did not want there?
support! but what is the potion time? im guessing you can make it a splash potion? this a very unique suggestion, especially for a suggestion that adds a new ore.

Awesome idea! Just some things...
A piece of coal can smelt 8 items, but what you're suggesting is that ardent dust can only smelt 3. Since ardent dust is rarer, and it's really hot, it should smelt more items then coal. Maybe 10 or so?
I don't like the idea of the ardent fire starter. The larger radius of fire could be very annoying, why not just give it a better durability than normal flint and steel?
This is really well done for your first suggestion! (Surely a lot better than my last suggestion >,>) Keep up the good work.

Current avatar: Amaterasu Omikami, or Amaterasu for short. Goddess of the sun, universe and everything that is good. Has a wolf form and a "human" form.
This is a great suggestion, it adds something to the nether that's very useful, and it has great uses and a reason for it's existence, that would make the game more interesting. I also think that it would make a great source of light.
The uses suggested in this idea sound pretty neat (as in, I'd use (make?) a mod with them) but TBH I'd really rather not have another ore - I have so many different things generating underground with all the other mods I play with that I can hardly carry my stuff out. Ardent dust could be created by crafting blaze powder and redstone, perhaps?

Now, let me reply to everything that needs replying to. Multi-quote doesn't seem to work, so I'll have to do it the other way.
@Bobaloochi00: That was an option. However, I'd prefer to keep enchantments separate from any material effects.
@Conn6464: I had never seen that pattern in potions. Although, what about night vision potions? Both night vision and invisibility are positive effects. Although maybe there should be a way for ardent to be renewable.
@Lovemooshroom1: Oh, I forgot to mention that. It would follow the same modifiers as other potions. You can add glowstone, redstone or gunpowder to have the same effects as other potions.
@TacoKingIII: Yeah, actually having it smelt only 3 is probably pretty bad. I should change that. As for the firestarter, I feel like if it is just a flat durability upgrade, then it is basically like trading ardent for iron right? Because you could get the same effect from making two normal flint and steels. Although maybe I could think of a different effect.
@Jaspurra: That actually reminds me of an idea I had a while ago. I should add it later.
@Planerguy: So, you're saying this isn't significant enough to justify a spot in your mod list? I guess I'm fine with that really. However, I would like it to be an ore so that it gives a purpose to mining in the Nether.
I find it hard to relocate my portal while exploring in the Nether. I find it very easy to find nether fortresses. The compasses, while in the nether should point towards the portal like they do in the overworld, rather than to a fortress. Other than that...

Oh hey. Looks like you're reading my signature. That's nice. If you thought I was going to put something funny here, I'm not. I will however put a link to my suggestion about gold tools. I think it's fairly popular. It would be nice if it was added. Just click the link and look at it. Please? I'm desperate. http://www.minecraft...-arent-useless/
Minecraft is not medieval-themed!!! As a matter of fact, it doesn't have a set time. And when and WHY did putting reponses in the quote, especially long ones, become a trend in the Suggestions? It's rather inconvenient, mainly since the OP has to gather your quote up manually. Avatar made by Endergirl!

I made up the way I though the ore and the dust looked. They are free to use and change in any way!
EDIT* I can't make the images larger :/ If you want me to I can later!
That's interesting. I'd love to try it out. And though a shining potion may seem worthless in single-player, lemme say that there were times when I wanted mobs to attack me. Given the dangers and abilities, this may help with mob farming, and may have uses as traps. This has my support.
There are some things I dislike about the idea, but overall I think it is really good. Here are my (minor) gripes:
Ardent Iron is interesting, but I don't really think the Iron is necessary. Iron is super common, especially if you have reached the Nether, so it doesn't really add to the cost. I would just make it be an Ardent Block that is crafted with 4 Ardent Dust similar to a Brick Block.
I dislike the fact that mobs just appear when mining the block. This doesn't happen with anything else besides Silverfish, and that is only certain non-ore blocks. It just doesn't make sense. I would prefer that it has a chance of exploding when mined, with about the destuctive force of a Ghast Fireball. That makes more sense to me.
The Ardent Firestarter doesn't seem to have much of a purpose. Anything it can do the Flint and Steel can already do, although a bit slower. It honestly seems more dangerous than it is worth, with the risk of accidentally lighting stuff on fire you didn't mean to (like yourself).
The Ardent Block I would make be made of 4 Ardent Dust, in place of the Ardent Iron, as I said before. I like the idea itself though.
Sparker: The name makes no sense, and as I dislike the Firestarter I would replace that with the Ardent Block.
I like the Flame Sparks (but not the name). The recipe for higher or lower level Sparks is too much though imo, especially for the extreme highs and lows. I would make the recipe make 4 Flame Sparks at light level 1, and then make so Blaze Powder increases the level by 1 and an Ardent Dust increases it by 5 (as Blaze Powder is renewable). I don't even really like my alternative more, I can't think of a way to make this not cost a lot while still being fair.
The last thing I would do is make so Ardent Ore only drops 1-2 Dust (as the Blocks would be cheaper), but Fortune can make it drop up to 6.
Those are just a few random thoughts. I like a lot of the core ideas, I would just implement them differently.
