A handful of ore blocks already have a purpose, but there are several that don't, other than compacting inventory space, and occasionally serving as an accent for building. But what if they all had unique purposes? Bolded blocks have suggested changes.
Coal Block: Combustable, used as fuel.
Iron Block: Used to build iron golems.
Redstone Block: Generates a redstone signal.
Nether Quartz Block: Decorative, can be made into stairs and slabs, as well as other variations.
Gold Block: Acts as a heat shield. Fire or lava cannot create spread fire if adjacent to a gold block.
Emerald Block: Attracts villagers when either held or placed.
Lapis Block: When placed in the vicinity of an enchanting table (like bookshelves), will decrease the lapis cost of any enchantments within it. Up to 15 can be placed, the first block reducing the cost by 1, each 5 blocks reducing the cost by an additional 1. 15 blocks (or more) will negate the lapis requirement entirely.
Diamond Block: When pushed into a space that another block is occupying using a piston, that block will be broken and its item(s) will be dropped as if it were broken by a diamond pickaxe.
Those are not very useful at all, it's too expensive to be useful, you would need too many Gold Blocks to heatshield, no much use for the new Diamond Blocks, and using Lapis to decrase amount of Lapis spent?
