Those who have really conquered their surroundings will appreciate this idea.
Some of us have slaughterhouses, automatically slaughtering animals, colllecting their drops, shipping them across a water channel, and into your possesion. You have to collect it, cook it, and add it to your chest all by hand. This is also the ONLY true factory in minecraft possible. You can only have completely automated meat collecting systems. Cobblestone factories, the next advanced device, requires you to sit at it constantly burning through your pickaxes mining at an inefficient rate.
To aid those people looking to advance ahead in redstone technology, I suggest this new block.
The processing block.
Crafting recipe:
Where is a dispenser, and where is redstone.
This block has one function: turn the input into an output. You right click it, and there appears a crafting table with transparent blocks of every kind. Using the transparent blocks, you set the crafting recipe, push OK, and now when the components of the recipe are thrown, or floated to this block, the block processes them into the finished product.
For example, lets say you want to make an assembly line for boats. If you want the process totally automated, you start with the raw material: wood. You put wood inside a dispenser, and it dispenses the wood, which floats in the watter channel down to the processing block, turning the wood into planks, then spitting out the planks to the next processing area, which will turn the planks into boats. The boats then finish the assembly line by collecting in a pool, which you step inside of and collect the planks.
adding a automatic storage unit, (i suggest funnels :3) and a automatic furnace type thing would greatly improve my already large support for this idea.
Doing this a thread at a time, don't want any flak about "one suggestion per thread" going on, unless by that they mean all subsequent mini ideas are relevant to the original topic, which I would consider.
TL;DR I thought of those but would rather be rule savvy than rule sorry.
I think this sounds like more automation then Notch wants to put in Minecraft. He already made subtle changes with the Halloween update to nurf basic water traps.
I could understand asking for chests to automaticly suck in resources that come near. But this is almost asking for the game to play itself.
{EDIT: you answered one of my questions in parent.. should have read the whole thing...}

The process can be as automated as you want it.
