While I don't like to push Minecraft into a distinctly medieval setting, I feel that pitfalls and moats are more suited to the theme than automated minigun sentry turrets.
Plus, all you need is a door to keep mobs out.

This man really is a genius. Never have i seen such a clear and well written forum post.
Sorry I didn't explain myself better. The thought was some sort of arrow turret (think the arrow towers from the old Warcraft games) that would automatically attack nearby enemies.
Yes but that seems too overpowered, and if it missed lots than it would be too annoying.
I propose that at thy heart of thy contraption is a very rare gem on minecraft.
Hey, make it whatever you want. I just want to have the *option* to put one (or two) down. Maybe it can draw arrows out of an adjacent chest, too.
I would really love turrets, would be particularly useful in the nether. Can't even step out the front door of my base without ghasts taking potshots (at least the whole thing is made of obsidian lol).
Turrets should come in a few basic flavors:
Scorpion/Ballista style (arrow using)
Cannon (Colonial era ball cannon type rig)
Grapeshot Cannon (basically a giant slow cannon shotgun)
Machine Gun
Flak (fires explosive shots at a slow but steady pace, automatic like the machine gun but shoots slower at about one shot per 2 seconds, explosive about half normal difficulty creeper strength)
Easiest to make would be the arrow users hardest for the Flak.
To craft, the scorpion would require a bow, arrow log and stick in this setup:
A
B St
Lo
The ballista (larger version) is almost the same but requires a bit more:
Lo A Lo
B B B
Lo St
Cannon would require iron bloodstone/netherrack and sulfur/gunpowder:
Bs Ir Ir
Ir G
Ir Ir Ir
Grapeshot is the same except it requires TNT where the Gunpowder (G) is and gravel in the previously open spot.
The MG requires a tri-pod which requires sticks and Iron:
St
Ir St Ir
St St St
It also requires a Bullet. The Bullet requires gold, sulfur/gunpowder, and iron
Go Gu Ir
The MG requires Iron, a bullet, Redstone, a tripod, and a button
Bu Rs Ir
Bu Ir Ir
Ir Tp Ir
The flak cannon due to it's power has the steepest requirements.
The Pad requires Iron and Obsidian
Ir
Ir Ob Ir
Ir
Barrel requires Obsidian Iron and a button
Bu Ir Ir
Ob
Ir Ir Ir
Shell requires gold, sulfur/gunpowder, iron, and tnt
Go Go Ir
Gu Ir Tn
Go Go Ir
Sight requires glass, redstone, and iron
Ir Ir Ir
Rs Gl Rs
Ir Ir Ir
Now you can construct the gun itself with 3 pads, 2 barrels, 2 shells, and a sight

They would all be automated so you can do what you please without worrying about them. All but the flak cannon would have the range of the bow and a 40 block line of sight, only arrow users would experience projectile drop, the flak cannon would be restricted to flying mobs and have equivalent range and line of sight of a Ghast. All would require electricity to operate, they are automated after all. Mobs would treat them as they treat the player and they would react accordingly (attack hostile, ignore peaceful).
What would be cool is to add a behavior setting with 3 settings, standard (attacks only hostiles), hostile (attacks everything but players and other turrets), and anti-personnel (attacks everything but the player that made it and other turrets regardless of who placed it). When a player breaks a turret it turns back into a complete usable turret like the workbenches do, if a mob breaks it then it's gone but will drop a few resources required to produce another, no complete parts though.

So, you think minecraft is medieval huh? TNT(1863)/Dynamite(7 May 1867) and steel railways(1857) in medieval times? I call BS, sure there's armor and swords, but it's NOT medieval. Either give me a source or cram it!
creating automatic defenses is not very hard as it is. With a little thought, you could create a moat that also harvests items.
But a moat cannot SHOOT the who stumble upon it. Moats and pits are fun but not as fun as having the defenses fight back. A turret is much cooler than a hole or a stream, also vastly more entertaining to lead things into.

This made me laugh. n00bs cant spell and overemphasize things just like here.
They shouldn't be ungodly hard to get, just require a bunch of the rarer resources like gold, netherrack (you have to go to rape by ghast land to get it), tnt, redstone, and sulfur. Also, where would the diamond even be in the contraptions, guns and giant crossbows don't exactly have a huge need of diamond last I checked. For my build I actually thought about how the resources would help the end product function. Kinda lame to throw something in that would help the end product in no way just because it's rare.

So a flippin zombie melting into pulp by a lava moat isn't more fun than it being shot?

10 grapeshot cannons simultaneously ripping apart a zombie with a thunderous volley or "Ur Ur Ur Ur Ur Argh" with a little flame thrown in? You could even control the firing via dust and a pressure pad if you like considering the need for electricity. Besides, your moat can kill YOU too, the turrets wouldn't unless they miss.

What about watching a mob try to get to you while getting impaled by a cactus, all while safely being behind a glass wall?
Automated turrets? No. I believe that we should have a crossbow trap which can be set off by redstone, however (There are a few mods which have this). It would consume arrows and have to be reloaded.

Good in theory, I kind of like it, but as jahw said, some people have made moats (mine is made out of lava), and it would be unecessary to have these.
