I'm making this quick tutorial on how to use Java 7 on mac, as some mods don't work with Java 6, and Minecraft is a bit lag with Java 6... (Note: I am doing the tutorial for Java 8 but it may not work with some Mods...)
Important! You need to install the JDK for this to work, not the JRE.
JAVA 7
0. You have to have Java 7, if you don't then download it here
1. Use /usr/libexec/java_home -v 1.7 command on a terminal shell to figure out where is your Java 7 home directory, copy the result
2. Now open Minecraft, open the Profile Editor, check Executables, then in the text field, write (or copy-paste) the path (text) you copied above
3. In the same field, copy paste this (without deleting the line you had before) /bin/java
4. You should have a path that should look like this* /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.7.0_45.jdk/Contents/Home/bin/java
5. Play! That's it!
* Note: The 45 will change depending on the version of Java you have
JAVA 8
0. You have to have Java 8, if you don't then download it here 1. Use /usr/libexec/java_home -v 1.8 command on a terminal shell to figure out where is your Java 8 home directory, copy the result
2. Now open Minecraft, open the Profile Editor, check Executables, then in the text field, write (or copy-paste) the path (text) you copied above
3. In the same field, copy paste this (without deleting the line you had before) /bin/java
4. You should have a path that should look like this* /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.8.0_25.jdk/Contents/Home/bin/java
5. Play! That's it!
* Note: The 25 will change depending on the version of Java you have
I have Java 8 Update 25, But when I go to the link you tell me to go to, it says:
/System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Home
Is it supposed to say 1.8.0.jdk or something, or am I doing it right? Because when I use the code it gives me, the game output is blank and the game won't run. I just wanna download the clay soldiers mod, and I haven't been successful for over a week
Can you please help me? When I do what you say in the terminal it gives me /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.7.0_45.jdk/Contents/Home. But when I put it in my executable and run Minecraft it just pops up with a blank game output? What do I do?
That is because at the end of you path, you didn't put /bin/java, so the path should be /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.7.0_45.jdk/Contents/Home/bin/java
When I tried using the path to the JRE version (which is inside of a bundle for some reason) Minecraft wouldn't even start. Thanks for adding the warning.
[p]Whenever I type the command in terminal I get[/p]
"Unable to find any JVMs matching version "1.8".[/p]
/System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Home" even after I just downloaded Java 1.8 two times please help me[/p]
Hello, sorry to bother you but I have an issue I can't quite figure out. I am on a mac, and when I run the command /usr/libexec/java_home -v 1.8, it terminal tells me "-bash: usr/libexec/java_home: No such file or directory". Never mind! I found out the path, copied it, and now it works. Though, I couldn't do it any of the ways you said. I figured it out on another thread, where user MaxJZeus said"Of all the bizarre and marvelous coincidences, I found a solution in a thread dedicated to a mod that had nothing to do with my trouble. On page 103 of the "Enchanting Plus" thread on these forums, user JustAStupidName [yes, that's the username he chose; I'd give him a much more flattering one] outlines these steps for Mac users wishing to use Java7:
-Go to System Preferences … -> Java -> tab: Java -> View -> Path
-Copy the path value found in the above step.
-Start Minecraft; chose the profile Forge (or create a new profile) and click Edit Profile
-Under Java Settings (Advanced), check the box next to Executable and paste the copied value
-Click Save Profile"

Copy this line: /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.8.0_25.jdk/Contents/Home/bin/java
and it should work!

Wait you need JDK?
JDK is recommended but not required. (It's just that this tutorial uses JDK)
If you want to use JRE, it will be a different path (that I do not remember, but if you follow the tutorial, it should probably still work)

That's because you were searching for the path of Java 8 while you have Java 7...
Anyways that works too
