While trying to monitor what videos use my school maps, I keep coming across the terms "Yandere" and "Yandere High School". What is it, and why is it so popular in the roleplay community? Why do random roleplay posts use the term too when their content is new and independent of whatever "Yandere" is supposed to be? Is it a specific school from a media franchise that is replicated by some MC builds?
I haven't seen them, but I would hazard a guess that they're inspired by the game Yandere Simulator. The gist of it is that the main character idolizes another character, and kills off romantic rivals in secret. Sort of a high school/thriller combo thing. It's probably not the school itself that people are replicating, so much as the secret murder for love thing.
More generally, "Yandere" refers to a type of character who comes off as sweet and kind, but becomes dangerous and deranged when they feel that their love is threatened, whether it's the object of their affections in danger, or just their chances with them.
