I've watched a lot of videos on how to find abandoned mine shafts and haven't seen anyone else use this method. I stumbled upon it by accident when I kept building portals to new biomes but ended up in mine shafts.
If you build your portals at a low Y value around 40 or lower in the nether(lava ocean in nether is y=31), when you go through them the game is going to prioritize placing your overworld portal in a cave if it is closer than the surface. Personally I avoid it because it's a bit disconcerting to come out into a pitch black cave and when I travel via nether portals I want to end up on the surface not down in a cave.
To me all your video demonstrates is that the best way to find abandoned mineshafts is by doing a lot of caving.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
