It's supposed to be that you "rammed your head", so you take damage based on your speed. It's not suffocation damage from being inside the wall.
It only looks like you're inside the wall because you're so long, and minecraft is used to players being tall rather than long.

I mean, it's only a graphical glitch, but yeah, it's still a glitch.
But how else would you handle it? Updating the hitbox of glliding players every 20th of a second wouldn't turn out so well, so instead we have this "glitch"

They are Elytra. You can't fly with them, you can only glide.
