Forget Cobblestone and any other block, because the emder dragon can destroy it. Everybody needs and ender perl so they can make the jump off a platform such as you were on.
The only real threat from the dragon is being knocked into the void, and what happened in the video has more to do with how the platform generates; this is why I always bring a few Ender pearls with me; not sure if it can be so far away that you can't throw one across the gap but the last time it happened I didn't have any problem getting across (if you miss and it falls into the void you won't teleport, though it could hit the side and teleport you so you fall down, it is possible to throw a second one though and save yourself).
Otherwise, full diamond armor and potions are completely unnecessary; I only wear iron armor and the only highly enchanted item I bring is a Power V bow, which is easy to replace if lost (I get several Power V books while enchanting other gear, from enchanting books for 1 level, then combining them) and the only time I've died is by getting knocked into the void; the actual "battle" isn't much of one as the dragon doesn't even try to attack that often (the main reason I bring a Power V bow is to get it over with faster), many people have posted suggestions on improving the fight, including making it harder.
