It was then, upon reading the challenge "To become king of the world... ...you have to stack four pistons!" that I tried to get a stack of four to work. Finally I managed it, but I realized the stack couldn't retract a block of dirt. Yesterday I took another shot at it and managed to add a sticky piston and a block of dirt. Success! Here is a video showing the messy looking circuits. Like the tutorial linked above it uses ABBA switches and falling edge triggers - eight of them!
I wonder if it would be possible to simplify things by designing a peristalsis-like sequence instead to rhythmically retract the pistons. Someday I'll at least try to compact the circuitry a bit. Maybe even try for six?
