So I was playing around in 13w16a, and found that not only dose shift (well sneak-key) dismount you from a horse, it also dismounts you from anything you are riding, including mine carts and boats. And I noticed that when you do this, the game is fairly smart about where to put you, you always get a safe exit. Using this principle, a simple "door"/entryway can be created.
Here is a video demonstrating the point:
Essentially, place a minecart on a rail within a 1x1 hole in the wall, and add blocks around the sides so that there is only one block to stand in on either side.
Now hold sneak, and right click. Poof! you are on the other side. . . assuming you are facing north or west. You see the good ol' N/W glitch is in play. The game picks the block farthest north/west when multiple valid locations exist. You can reverse the direction by adding some extra blocks to block off the northern/western side.
This way you can only go south/east.
The same principle works for boats, though they are a little tricky to deal with.
Now if only detector rails could be set to only charge when the cart is occupied! Then you could even detect entry.

One potential way to detect entry would be to use a dispenser to keep an item on a weighted pressure plate diagonally from the object being mounted. When you mount the object, you suck the item off the plate into your inventory and trigger the circuit. I'm sure there are likely more clever ways to go about it.

You could do the same with a normal pressure plate and even tripwire i belive.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

How could I forget tripwires! That would probably be a better solution for most cases.
