I've got one that uses the same principle on a server I play on, and I made it huge for no reason. Actually, I'm going for the largest survival-made cactus farm

Punching trees, a life-long task, never to use an axe, the best and most refreshing way. Punching Trees, coming to a Minecraft near you
What is the purpose of a cactus farm? I'm just curious, not trying to be a jerk or anything! I appreciate all cool automated inventions and people who share their stuff with the rest of us. Can this be applied to other items instead of cactus? I just never have any need for cactus whatsoever, after dye-ing my first six (?) sheep (green, lime green and cyan?).
Well cactus is used for green dyes or for some traps (due to the fact that they hurt people) No this can't be applied to any other farm Except the way I did the water streams can be applied to everything

Absolutely, I took note of that technique, and that's why I was careful to state I wasn't trying to be a jerk with my question. You can learn something from everything. Was just curious if I was missing something about cactus. Fireworks, for one, but I have no need for stuff like that when I play cause its mostly single player. Same with armor dyes. But for multiplayer I now understand there is a value to cactus.
Understood, but you only need a few pieces for that purpose. I grow three cactii outside my main residence and over time I've collected 4 full stacks just from farming them over and over.

They make for great walls and traps on PVP servers.

Check out my Lets Play! It would be much appreciated! :3
Got a 32-unit cactus farm like this in the nether based on a design I made for beta 1.2_02 and it still works a treat. Going to try for a waterless (post 1.3) version after the redstone update that hoppers all the loose segments.
Given that some people play on Hard or Hardcore mode, even punching cactus may be an unacceptable source of risk. Hence, a no-touch cactus farm is a boon. It's especially useful for servers running Extra Hard Mode, which nerfs the dyeing of sheep so that dyed colours are not inherited by breeding, and must be re-dyed after shearing.
WIth Hoppers in the latest snapshot you can make the Cactus farm truly automatic and not have to worry about the drops disappearing. I have a small farm set up. I don't get many Cacti but I don't really ever need it.

If you have any better farm designs I'd love to see them
you can also use cactus for xp grinders
