What do you guys do to increase your subscriber counts? Do you use an external website to advertise? Ask politely? Remind the viewers at the end of your videos?
Just curious which methods have worked best for you?

Personally - I take the 'natural route' (has taken me from 0 to 205 subs in about 8-9 months).... this is basically including your channel in your signature/profile/etc. within communities you're already part of (because chances are if you're interested in something, the people you interact with regularly may very well be into it too). Obviously this is the 'slowest' growth method... and there are much more shady and quicker methods (sub for sub, sub spam, contact spam, etc.) - that always leave a bad taste in my mouth, and frankly I try to avoid.
You could also try actual proper advertising, but I dunno how that would work out... it wouldn't fit my style personally, but yea - that's because I'm not a commercial channel, I'm a personal channel

The sub for sub and sub spam i do not agree with, but contact "spam" (in my opinion) is not bad at all. Many people are willing to check out your channel because they want to see something new.The only way they are exposed to new stuff is if they are on forums. Youtubes recommended videos are usually from people with thousands of subs. That is just want i think though.
Don't copy others and make original content. Subscribers will come flowing if it's good enough.
Not entirely true... this is one of those areas where it's "counter-intuitive" in social motivations (much like how for complex tasks, improving a monetary incentive, tends to decrease the results).
The thing is, if you can't come up with something "OMG ITS ORIGINAL" (which is nearly impossible, as creativity is a 'seed' type deal - where each idea is grown off of the seed of another idea) - is to do what's already being done, but better - or do something that's a "niche" (ie a poorly catered to segment of the market). Minecraft proper was a niche that has gotten over-filled (ie - the audience to content creator ratio is insanely bad for content creators) - so you have to be "better", and win people with your personality and quality.
I say do it for fun! If you start a channel only in hope of getting famous most likely you will be discourage fast. I watch alot of gaming videos and the ones I enjoy and subscribe to are the ones that love what they do. You can tell the true from the fake within 5mins. Keep your audio and video good quality so people can enjoy
