Erm.. what if your voice is not a good one, and you've had a speech impediment since you could talk and stutter often (regardless of reading and practice, I do this all the time, I read this story a lot, and I stutter on it a lot when I talk aloud, even though I've read it like, 4 times) and you slur your words randomly and talk real fast - but (here comes the hard part) you don't know you're doing it, and it sounds completely normal voice at a normal speed and not know you're stuttering, or even slurring words. How do I fix this - to make it more presentable?
1. Do my viewers want/need to see this?
A perfect example would be basic resource gathering (ie mining). We all spend time doing it, but do they want to watch you do it? Unless you are a master at improv without stimulus then it is likely worth it to cut it out/fastforward it. What I personally do is fastforward while playing some music in the background. Whatever you choose to do, please don't have half your video be of you whacking away at a wall while commenting on how awkward it is to have ran out of things to say.
Okay... so how do I make it like that? What kind of things should I record? Me building and talking?
As for the question on what to record, I'd say most things the first time you do it (for instance, the first time you explore a large cave, the first time you build a basic house, the first time you explore a given area) but don't repeat the same thing over and over. Don't explore the same cave multiple times on camera, build the same basic type of house unless it has significance (Like starting over in a new area or if it is different from the previous house), or making particularly large treks back to the same place. Just try to keep it fresh mostly. And never show resource gathering beyond the first few times. Seriously, no one wants to see it.

Tip: Don't think that just because your going to make an LP it will make you famous on the "Interwebs" it is simple luck that some people have a huge cult following. Do LP's because you enjoy doing it, not because you want fame. If you put work into it then you might find your self with a large following, or you might not. But it wont matter because you did it for fun.

Most definitely true, the absolute vast majority of video makers never get very big. I've been lucky to reach 1000 subscribers, but most don't even reach that far, let alone multi-hundreds of thousands. Video making is a hobby of passion at best.

I'm glad you agree, I wasn't sure if this was voiced before in the thread, but I thought it was worth posting. I think for a lot of people the underlining meaning in making videos is too become famous but they don't admit it. So maybe they'll read the post and go "Oh, I'm doing this" and either they rethink or find something they truly enjoy.
More so with all the other LP's with Minecraft (nevermind the billions of other games that have LP's). Youtube is overflowing with them, everyone and their mothers plays minecraft.

Yes, ambition to popularity isn't something most people will admit to. But the (painful) beauty to Youtube is that it weeds out those who don't do it for the fun of it. Since it takes as long as it does to even just get a few loyal viewers most people who don't have the passion for video-making or drive to work through the dull times leave before getting much of a following. A passion for fame can work, but it will be a lot bumpier and less enjoyable than those who make them for the fun of it and won't be as rewarding. It is cruel in a way, but it is pretty ruthlessly effective.

Luck and timing may be a factor in getting the ball rolling but it cannot sustain long-term growth.
What does sustain steady increase in subscribers is quality, consistency, and promotion. It's a lot of work but if you're determined and stick with it, your channel will grow.
An effective method to kick-start a channel is make a good video and try to get someone with a lot of subs to view it and give it a "Like". That "Like" notification will automatically be sent to their sub base and lots of them will be curious and check it out. If they like it too, they may sub.
The best way to get started is to get a "famous" LP'er to do a dual-comm or a shout-out in a video.
Understand, once you get that initial burst of subs it's then up to you to keep the momentum going! Don't stop there. Get into live streams, do more dual-comms, make tons of videos...
Good luck!
Paul

Thank you for posting Paul, your advice obviously carries a lot of weight. Unfortunately not a lot of the more famous LPers do duel-comms or other such things with smaller LPers. They won't get as many subs or views as they would from a duel comm of an equal tiered LPer.
And now I feel like a downright scrub, but would you like to check out my videos? I'm not asking for anything fancy, just some plain old advice would be nice. >_>

I'm a long time user of Xfire and the client has a built in video recorder and customizable recording and sound settings. Once the video is done, you can choose what to convert it from raw. Xfire also allows you to upload the videos to their site, but limited number of videos.
I like the guide, I'm thinking about making a Let's Play at some point, Probably of Minecraft, and maybe some other stuff, because I'm known for being a pretty funny and entertaining fellow, and a lot of people I know think I'm naturally entertaining enough to make clever commentary. Anyway, your guide is really useful, especially in the realm of the software I'll need, but Is there anywhere to find a good technical in depth guide on making them? I know most of the execution stuff, like what to say, how to make it quality, that stuff, but is there a guide for how to actually make one? I've never done ANYTHING with recording on a computer, sound or video, and I've never uploaded anything to Youtube, and I'm sort of out of my depth with Resolutions, bitrate, and all that jazz. You touch on it in the guide, but I'm still a little confused as to how that stuff works. I'm planning on using Virtualdub for the video capture and Windows MM for the editing, because I don't really have a budget to speak of. Where could I go to find information about how to do the technical aspect of a Let's Play?
Again, nice guide! Ooh! Also, What should I plan on using for a mike? Should I get a headset type thing, would that work well? I'm going to college next year, so I could throw that in with the rest of the stuff I'm buying, as long as it doesn't break the bank. Also, what kind of Framerate on minecraft would I be looking for to get the best viewer satisfaction? I can't possibly do it on this computer, because If I have minecraft and only minecraft running, it hovers around 10. Like 30? 40? More? I'm getting a new computer before I move off, so hopefully it will run better than this minimalistic POS.
I'll be sure to post it once I get some episodes up. Despite the advice here, I think I'm going to start cold and release those. I'm good at winging things, so it won't be too painful. I'm used to performing, because I'm a musician, so I probably won't be too awkward. If anyone's interested in giving it a look when I make some, let me know, And Thanks again for the guide!

Has anyone mentioned swearing/perverted jokes? I may be old fashioned or just overly conservative but I find excessive cussing or dirty jokes to be unappealing. When people litter their sentences with unnecessary "d*mn"'s and "sh*t"'s it makes me lose interest. I suppose I prefer a bit more professionalism from people. I've been terribly spoiled by Yogscast. There's swearing in that (Simon being the main culprit) but they don't use it as part of their common language. Granted most people on the Internet probably don't complain about such vulgarity. For some it may be part of their everyday language although to get to a wider audience maybe one should try to be moderate about it? When I hear swearing or dirty jokes it makes me think, "Oh great, another subpar LP." If you are angry or freaked out then it's OK I suppose. The only other exception I can think of is when the theme of the LP is the sort that would naturally include vulgarity, for instance a griefing series. (Yet if you can pull off a griefing series without vulgarity, all the more power to you.)

Thanks, I should probably start my LP soon. Anyway, I'll htrow in my 2 cents about video recording and editing. As far as recording goes, IMHO the best free recorder is Livestream Procaster. While it was designed for livestreaming, it is very efficient (i can even run it on my computer!) and can record both mic audio and in-game noise at the same time. It can savevideos too. As far as editing goes, I can throw in another option. while I dont think it was worth my $50, Pinnacle Studio (from $50) is certainly usable and better tham WMM.
Thanks to this guide I started using VideoPad instead of Windows Movie Maker. It took me half a day EXCLUDING converting to throw in a simple movie with WMM, which wasn't too bad but still long. Now with VideoPad, I can achieve the same video's with better quality in a few hours INCLUDING converting. Amazing how much easier it can get with an even simpler program than WMM.
Not to mention the fact that VideoPad can upload straight to Youtube from the actual program itself. Pretty amazing stuff, really.

I've seen people use annotations instead of talking.
Nope, talking is not a requirement for an LP. I am aware of one LP in the Minecraft "Let's Play" Series Directory that uses annotations instead of a voiced commentary: Craig Plays Minecraft.
