Well, now I am the one with the question. I downloaded HyperCam 2, but I can't get it to record my computer's sounds. I don't seem to have System Mixer in the Sounds section of my Control Panel.
I wanna know what program is used to record minecraft/games on mac
I'd love to have something better. But for now, I use QuickTime Player to record.
Specifics:
1. Soundflower installed.
2. Audio Midi setup used to create a new multiple output device, that outputs to soundflower and to my speakers.
This device is the default output device.
3. LineIn used to copy my microphone to sound flower.
4. Soundflower is the default recording device.
Result:
1. Game sounds output to soundflower and speakers, so I hear it and the recorder records it.
2. Microphone is copied to soundflower, so the recorder records it.
3. Output from the game over the speakers gets a minor feedback into the microphone, *but is not rebroadcast out the speakers* -- no feedback loop, no problem.
---
After recording, I use iMovie to shrink it down. It records in (I think) motion jpeg, which is basically a full jpeg image every frame -- I use iMovie "Share -> Export to QuickTime ... ", Movie to QuickTime Movie, with options of 30 fps, keyframe every 16, 2500 kbps, multipass, 854x480. 2500 is what YouTube recommends, and I've had people tell me that it's too much. But it's a lot better than the 22,000 or so that QTP records by default.
The next thing that I'm currently playing with is "Filter -> Adjustments -> Color Sync". I'm trying to learn what color matching profile to use for the best results on other people's monitors, and do not yet have an answer. (Uploading a bunch of test cases to YouTube, give me two days or so to finish).

ToDo: Learn Mumble, set up Murmur. (Murmur is available in Macports; mumble is available as a download), install the minecraft mod for mumble. Should yield better chat than skype, with directional position support (so you hear someone from the direction of their avatar).
---
Not yet tried: Screenium (or was it ScreenFlow?).
(In regard to a mod that gives realistic animal genetics):
Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?
i recorded a fairly good-quality video of a lets play, and it ran well when i viewed the initial format, but when i pasted it onto WMM and played it, there was a delay between the video and sound. does anyone know what's up?
For Mac users: Screenflow, in trial mode, generates a really obnoxious watermark, making it worthless. I'm not going to spend $100 on something that I don't know if it will be good enough or not.

Is there a delay when you actually render the video, or just while you edit?
That always happens in WMM when you edit
Here's another suggestion. It's possible that people may want to have music in their songs, but a lot of times if they used copyrighted music there will be issues and their video may not be viewable in some nations. To overcome this, use royalty free music. Just search it in your preferred search engine. There's tons out there. I personally just looked up electronic instrumental for possible mining/construction montages and found a pretty good collection of songs with various sounds and size, all free.
Just saying, but I don't think that Camstudio should be on that list. I have tried it, and it is absolutely terrible. It only takes a maximum of 300 frames per second (extremely slow on Minecraft) and the audio is faster than the video, as well as it being awfully low-quality.
I have an important piece of information to add to this.
If you are uploading to YouTube, what bps should you use?
Well, you might figure that YouTube forces 360p output to around 650 bps, and 480p output to around 1100 bps (not as sure about that number) that having 1500-2500 bps is as good as you need. You might figure that using multi-pass encoding will give you a better picture. You might even think that if your source is a 1600 bps compressed video, that outputting higher than 2500 bps compressed is pointless.
I want to say: That's not the case.
I have found, multiple times now, that using 7,500 bps with compressed video, single pass, even after YouTube squeezes it down, gives much better quality images than 2,500 bps compressed, multiple pass.
If you are uploading to YouTube, toss as many bps through your video compression as you can afford in upload time. That cannot be stressed enough. For me, currently, it is faster to do 7,500 bps single pass, and upload that, than it is to do 2500 multiple pass, and upload that. The time of multiple pass processing is longer than it takes (cable modem) to upload the larger file, and it makes a better picture, faster.
This holds true for input that is 1600 bps H.264; this holds true for input that is 22,000 bps uncompressed.

Thank you for making this thread! It has helped me. Good thing I already have Sony Vegas
Also, a good recording software is http://screencast-o-matic.com/ Screen Cast O Matic. Free one: Small watermark. Payed one: no watermark, and simple editing tools. Costs $10 a year I think.
Correct me if im wrong, but i think a screen recording software takes a screenshot 30 times per second and then plays them through. would i need a really powerful computer to make high quality 'lets play' series' for minecraft?
any easy way to seperate the audio recorded with fraps, i know that you can record your mic thorugh it but then it one track when put into say sony vegas, audactiy is tricky to sync perfectly
This is awesome! I just wanted to know if you were going to make a list of mikes, or if they are all one company or something- I've never youtubed yet, but I want to. I think this is a very good post! A for you!
