This is actually really helpful. I've been looking to upgrade my editing software from Windows Live Movie maker. Sony Vegas seems like the best option but i cant tell which versions are what. The link on here has a bunch of stuff some look like tutorial DVD's and others software. The main program itself looks like 600 USD which is nuts lol. Can anyone help me out and tell me which version of Sony Vegas would be good? If its that super expensive one I guess I'll be looking for another alternative. Thanks!
ATTENTION: Anyone looking for a good screencapture software for free, look for Bandicam. It is great for minecraft, requires little to no setup beyond what you would expect, and has very good video and audio. It is designed for OpenGL and DirectX games, and is what I am using for my lp that I am starting soon. Other than needing to add this, great guide :-)
Edit: okay, bandicam is not technically free, but the trial is 10 minutes of recording at a time, with a watermark on top of the screen. Though I doubt wither is a problem ;-)
I'm new to recording and rendering and have a general question and I apologise in advance if it's been covered somewhere already.
I recorded my first video using Fraps and rendered in Sony Vegas. The video on YouTube shows those black lines along the top and bottom of the screen, is there a particular setting I should use when rendering to eliminate this?

Make sure to have your video in WideScreen in Sony Vegas. I am not familiar with Vegas as I use Adobe Premiere, but to get rid of the lines, I just had to change my video settings when I created my project from a 4:3 format to a 16:9 format. I then had to do the same when compressing back in WMM because my internet connection's bad .:tongue.gif:
What was hapenning to me was that Premiere was in 4:3, which added black lines on the top/bottom. Then, YouTube added them on the sides to show it in 16:9. Stupid things -.-
I dont know if this has been said or not, but I recommend adding it. I use sony vegas to edit. I render in uncompressed .AVI at 1080p. While it produces files that are often larger than the original, it helps with the next step. I put the file into handbrake, a free software that will compress and encode it. Sony Vegas has no support for H.264 but handbrake has default settings made for H.264 with little quality loss. I've tried a lot of things, but that has worked the best for me.
Edit - Ill add a video showing the quality when I get home.
Awesome thread! Everything looks great, but Camtasia could also be listed under the category of "video editors" imo, it does a better job than WMM, plus it records.
Maybe I'm just simplistic, but I use Livestream Procaster. When I do livestreams it saves a copy of the stream to my computer. So in a way it's a recording software? From there I could simply edit it using an editor software.
For HD: Any resolution greater than or equal to 1280x720 and less than 1920x1080 should be rendered as a 720p video as youtube will re-compress them to that anyways, and this will save you uploading time. 1080p and higher can be rendered at that specific resolution. (I think youtube offers "original resolution" for 1080p and higher.)
Make sure you render at the proper aspect ratio, too. If your monitor is 4:3 (CRT monitor; I don't think any LCD does this ratio), 960x720 is the resolution you should use. If your monitor is 5:4 (non-widescreen LCD screens), use 900x720. If your monitor is 16:10 (i.e. its resolutions are like 1680x1050), use 1152x720. All these suggested resolutions may make rendering take a bit longer (as it has to resize things), but uploading will take less time and you won't be wasting any resolution that youtube would throw out for 720p." I have an internet plan that counts my uploads as downloads. I recently recorded an episode of my first ever let's play, and it came out as 40GB! My internet usage is 100GB...
How can I compress the videos without losing quality???
Hey guys! Speaking of youtube, you guys should check out my channel on youtube. I'm just starting out and I need more a lot more fans and subscribers. So whattya say? I play games and record them for your enjoyment, this is all I want to do. Please if you guys could help I would appreciate it so much. Have a wonderful day you guys!
For the mac: QuickTime player does not do a good enough job of recording. It does not compress as it records, so you consume 21,000+ bps. It will eat your disk faster than swapfiles.
Equally, I have no luck at all editing with iMovie. The whole approach -- you have events and projects, different commands do different things in project and events, the same command does different things if you have a selection or not, you cannot mark two points and select from A to B, you cannot split in an event, you cannot do this, that doesn't work over there, etc.; I cannot figure out a useable workflow for iMovie.
I have tried Camtasia, which can record both microhone and speaker output, but every time I pause/resume the A/V gets out of sync.
What is a good recorder? What is a good editor? Not an "all-in-one, single window, you can't do anything while I'm doing something for you" program.

... did I really ask that?
