Prince Birger of Borgholm has ended his military march after the peace agreement between Borgholm and Gardè was signed. Now that the war has ended the Kingdom of Borgholm finally could focus on their nation growth and the people without reports of major armies marching across the border. But looting of villages around the river Northbron created problems for the kingdom's economic growth and the trust from the people.
Birger was sent to the island Beside Northbron where he forms the city Kingsholm to protect the Kingdom from a sea invasion by foreign navies and to stop the pillage of the villages.
The River Northbron or the Great Belt as its called is one of the most important trade routes in the Baltic Sea, If something terrible happened here, it would cause problems in all the major kingdoms around Baltika.
The work was about to start and as a general Birger knew how to set up a stronghold in the best possible way. He brought in the most experienced builders from Bornholm and Hambeck to set up the fortress and after a few days was the Foundation completed.
Some days later was the three large towers finished, it gave the castle the name Three Towers and the name quickly spread around the Baltika. Several kings feared what Bornhom's control over the trade route would cause and spies were sent to Kingsholm to follow the work and how it affected the trade.
Because the fortress is growing too slowly several builders were sent to Kingsholm to help. This led to an effective growth and the fortress was scheduled to be ready in just a few months.
The fortress began to take shape, walls and a royal residence was now finished and it had its own secure courtyard. Birgers father King Edward was pleased with the mighty rumor the fortress had gotten around Baltika. If anyone should go against him, he could use the river for his own benefit.
Traders had begun to notice the fortress Three towers enormous growth, they were happy that they are now able to pass the river safely without much concernes for plunderers or pirates. Some also had plans to start a life in the new region Kingsholm.
And not long after the fortress was completed, the first merchant arrived to Kingsholm and he decided to start a new life here with his Family, and with one of the busiest trade routes in Baltika Birger imagined a mighty city being born.
Kingsholm proved to be an attractive place, and as the time went several Merchants chose to settle in the new region. And with several residents, needed more space, Birger sent soldiers to burn down the forest nearby to make room for more people. And now that the castle was finished, Birger moved in with his servants.
With a town growing as fast as Kingsholm it was hard to detect smuggling in and out of town. In order to ensure the correct taxation of the people bringing goods in and out of Kingsholm, a new tax office has been constructed. Hopefully this will bring an end to the wide-spread smuggling on the river
The town continued to grow, and even do the residents came from different countries around the Baltic states they shared one religion, one god. They needed one place they could pray and ask for forgiveness. Birger sent bid for his father sayin that Kingsholm needed a church. But King Edward refused to send money to the construction. As head of the city, Birger could not let his people down, the money to the church took he out of his own Pocket, no matter the cost. Even if it would ruin him, Kingsholm needed a Church.
The word was spread and soon stonemasons began to arrive from several of the lands bordering the Baltica ocean. Within weeks, the foundations for "The Great Church" had been laid. They also made a crypt beneath the church, which would house the wealthy People of Kingsholm if not Birger him self.
The construction moved quickly, aided by generous donations from Prince Birger and the wealthy merchants of the town. At the end of the second summer, the roof was already being constructed.
Birger had spared no expense in the construction of the Church, it was known that if the town church was rich in detail and interior the town was powerful. Birger would show his residents and visitors that Kingsholm was on it's way to becoming an important trade city in the Baltic Sea.
After the church was finished the population doubled in just a few months, a large stone road was built to make it easier for carts to arrive. It was also opened an market in the middle of the town, here it was always busy and only sellers with the most to offer was offerd a spot on the mart. Birger was optimistic about the city's future and looked forward to seeing it grow.
Thank you so much. Unfortunately I'm not able to upload any pictures and stories the next few days becouse I'm On vacation with some friends in Sweden and will not return until Saturday. But I have photos ready and I'm going to post them as soon as I get home. Thanks for your support, it makes me motivated to continue on the long story.
The town continued to grow and a new neighborhood called Church street was constructed for church workers now that several priests were interested in the new church with the great name. But with all these immigrants occurred some problems, there was no longer enough food for everyone in the city and Birger had to find a solution fast before the people became angry and refused to work.
A wall with two new towers was constructed at the northern gate, it made room for one small piece of land where farmers could grow wheat for bread. But it was only a temporary solution, Birger knew that he had to give more land to the farmers if the city should not run out of food and most importantly bread!
But in the capital Borgholm King Edward was troubled, he did not like to see Kingsholm's wealthy growth. He feared that Kingsholm could take the role as capital if the growth continued. King Edward commanded to put the city in ruins and if Birger refused to follow orders he would be banished from the royal Family.
Birger was horrified by his Father's orders, and he refused to follow the King's orders. Birger sent 40 soldiers with one letter to Borgholm, only his most loyal men remained in the fort. The letter said that Kingsholm is now a separate Kingdom where I King Birger of Kingsholm will rule. Birger knew he possibly put the city at risk of an attack but he will fight to the end.
People shouted with happiness for their new king, the streets were filled with flowers on the day Briger was going to be crowned. Royal families from all over Baltika came with boats to celebrate the new king and the peace between them. All except Lord Occam of Hambeck could come, he was busy due to an economic crisis in the Capital.
Inside the Great Church was decorated with the most beautiful flowers and the Kingdom's new colors blue and yellow, it was also laid out a royal runner in red fabric.
The King's armor was also present during the coronation, it was made in the royal blacksmith in Borgholm. The Armor was made of the finest gold in the entire Baltika and it impressed all of the kings during the ceremony.
After the ceremony there was a feast in the royal dining hall inside the castle. It was the perfect ending to a great day and Birger made some strong friendships with powerful kings and Lords.
I love that there are still city-journals happening, in fact, the reason I've returned to the forums is to start one myself. Your buildings are nice and your story is pretty good. Keep up the good work.
The release from the kingdom of Borgholm was celebrated by the people for many days, but Birger had got a lot to think about. Everything Kingsholm used to get from Borgholm was now gone. They had no access to a blacksmith, clean water or material. Briger must now build these things in Kingsholm and he must hurry, A War could come anytime.
He started with the most needed, clean water! He got farmers to construct a well in the new church street, it was much appreciated by the People.
But every time Birger looked across the river he imagined that the Royal fleet of Borgholm came sailing in and set the city on fire. To end his nightmare he decided to construct a bridge that made it impossible for large ships to attack the city from the west. It also made it possible for Merchants to enter the city without a boat, the bridge also connected Kingsholm with the mainland which Birger and the people was very pleased With.
One day there came a letter to the castle Three Towers, Birgers big fear had now happened. The Kingdom of Gardè has declared war on Borgholm now that they no longer have control over the river Northbron. King Edward knew that if he resumed control over Northbron the Kingdom of Gardè would pray for Peace.
Birger knew what he now faces, Borgholm and Kingsholm was now at war. Spies had seen two big ships got ready to sail towards the border filled with troops and canons. Birger ordered that two large canons were to be constructed and they will be transported to Kingshill Fortress.
Without a proffesionel army Birger commanded that all men from an age of 16 to 60 should follow him to Kingshill Fortress to defend the country, and they did. Wives and children stood watching as their husbands and sons march across the mountains to defend the country ignorance that it was perhaps the last time they saw each other.
After a three day march they finally reached the Kingshill Fortress. The fortress was well equipped with three defense towers on the eastern side, but Birger knew that many held a sword for the first time in their lives.
Birger sat in the office planning where he would put People so the fortress was best suited for a close attack. Suddenly he heard someone screaming "THE ROYAL FLEET IS HERE !!". Birger ran out to see it with his own eyes.
And as the soldier screamed they'd come. Two large ships loaded with troops and canons like the spy said.
Birger took on the armor and went up to the wall. Then he said these Words "in war the heroes always outnumber the enemy. Today we are Heroes sent by God in his will to defend Our country!!" The men cheered so loudly that the enemy could hear them, but Borgholm's soldiers were not frightened and continued heading towards the fortress.
The enemy sailed to a small island close to the land and set fire to the trees. When the trees were burned down, they started the construction of a cannon. Birger had now lost the upper hand and his cannons had not yet come. All Birger could do now was to look at the enemy bombarding the fortress.
They fired and hit the fortress several times and Birger feared they would destroy some of the towers. If The fortress was put on fire and the cannons do not come, the battle was lost. The enemy enjoyed the sight of the castle in flames and it was not long before they could put their troops ashore.
The guns continued firing and they had put a whole tower into flames, and many men had already lost their lives. This did not look good.
But when the day came Birger had finally received his cannons. And he commanded them to get on the upper wall.
Meanwhile the enemy headed towards shore to unload the heavy troops so they could start the march towards the fortress. Birger knew he had to stop them.
Birger put up the cannons in no time and fired fast one shot against the enemy cannon. This was his chance to resume the upper hand in this Battle. After few shots the enemie cannons were destroyed and he could now aim at the royal fleet.
He bombarded the fleet but the boats was moving so they were difficult to hit, especially for inexperienced men. The cannons snide one of the ships enough for it to burst into flames.
Few shots later, both ships destroyed and if there were any survivors they constituted no threat. Birger hoped that they ran back to his father and said how powerful the Kingdom of Kingsholm had become. If Borgholm sent request for peace would Birger refuse. They should be punished for what they had done to his People and men.
The next day were used to extinguish the flames, while it was raised a monument in the fortress. The monument was to honor all the lives that were lost in the battle of Kingshill. Many families had now lost a father, a son or a husband. The loss of life is one of the biggest defeats a country can face.
They headed back to Kingsholm and when Birger looked around he saw how the army had been halved. He shed a tear, But he had to pull himself together and be strong for his people, who knew what the time would bring.
After the glorious victory of Kingshill drew Borgholm back after Gardè entered the country with a large army, and it has begun to form alliances around the Baltic Sea. In many of the kingdoms war has reached the capitals, and this leads to many refugees. Kingsholm has already received 210 refugees from 9 different nations, one of them is the experienced blacksmith Torvald who have been offered to work for the army. Torvald has brought everything he owns and he answered yes to the offer. Finally had Kingsholm gained an experienced blacksmith to make equipment for the army.
The population had risen sharply and the church had sent a letter to Birger that Kingsholm's church was no longer big enough for the population. But Birger could not afford to build another church and brought in the architect Hamritch to draw a new model of the present church. And so he did. The drawing was ready only a few days later and chairs were set up on either side, finally the people were able to see how wide the new church would be.
The wars continued and it had now formed into two big alliances, the South and North Baltika. The south marched towards the North and the North sailed to the south, both with large armies. But then came a terrible message, the Kingdom of Friesland was destroyed after the The south Baltic troops burned down the capital. This made Birger very concerned, although Kingsholm were not in an alliance they could be declares war at anytime. Birger sent soldiers to improve the two northern towers, they were going to be twice as big.
With refugees increasingly entered the city came also some wealthy men, they had great wealth and Birger would be more than happy if they choose to settle in Kingsholm. And they did, one of them was Haakon who was looking for a place where he could set up a house for him and his family. He went to Birger and asked how the city plan looked like. Birger said that the street that went outside the church was going to be named "Town Hall Street" now that Kingsholm's Town Hall would be set up next to it, it would also be a big market. Haakon liked what he heard and he built one house no people in Kingsholm had ever seen before, and it had three large floors. This where very impressive and the architectural style had come to stay.
Not long after Haakons house was finished was the basement of the Town Hall laid. That the city would now get a Town Hall with heads of state was one big step in the right direction.
To make room for the large square Birger sent troops to burn down the trees that stood in the way.
A few months later stood the town hall and the square finished. The marked was one of the biggest in Baltika and attracted many wealthy merchants. The marked did also make room for large houses for many of the wealthy men living in Kingsholm.
To celebrate the new Town Hall and the great marked hosted King Birger a great feast for the upcoming heads of state and the wealthy men of Kingsholm inside the town hall, the Hall was decorated with white tablecloths and beautiful flowers.
The next day there was a new opening in the city, the new blacksmith was finally finished. Here people could take their iron and get it melted into a sword or armor.
The ground floor had the blacksmith Torvald his workplace, where he worked in extreme heat.
While in the second floor he had his residence.
Now Kingsholm had become one of Baltika's largest and most powerful trading cities. But with all this Wealth, there had become a number of wealthy men in the town, Birger knew these men were powerful and if they teamed up they had more money than what he had himself. Birger chose to create a class in the kingdom, the class was named "Jarl". A "Jarl" was a man of great wealth and was the class under the royals. Now the wealthy men in Kingsholm had become Jarl's and the trend was adopted by many other kingdoms in the North now that many had wealthy men without a grand name.
Because of the war, some trade agreements was canceled because of the country's ports were blocked by an enemy fleet. This led to high taxes in Kingsholm, this was not well liked by the Jarls. They marched toward the fortress and demand to talk with Birger. The Jarls were important for Kingsholms economy and that the Jarls knew. They threatened to leave the town unless the taxes were reduced. Birger said he'd give a final answer as soon as possible. Some days later came Birger with a statement: Birger promised tax relief to all those who choose to serve in the army if the country should be exposed to war. But the persons has to pay for weapons and armor themselves. Weapons and Armour were very expensive but most Jarls could pay the price.
Birger decided to form a new class for the few Jarls who could afford this, the class was named "Nobility" and was the highest rank a man could gain. The nobility got a sense of power, that they had triumphed over the king. They got what they wanted and they now knew how important they were for the town and the kingdom. To ensure that this continued they would form a Nobility Council, where they could vote on which rights the Nobility should have. They sent a request for an architect from Akersborg that could draw the House of Nobility, no matter how much it was going to cost they were willing to pay for the house in which the Council would take place. A few days later the architect Simon De la Vallée finished drawing the house and the foundation was established shortly after. Birger weren't pleased with the news but he knew how important they were for the country, he let it go for now. Who knows, maybe it's for the best? Birger just had to wait and see.
The work on the new house passed quickly, many workers were brought in and the House of Nobility was completed shortly after the foundation was laid. There was one impressive sight, no one in town had seen such an architecture been taken in use and the nobles were pleased with the new building.
On the ground floor there were 6 rooms, 2 of them was the dining room and the Library.
While the second floor was the great Nobility hall, on the wall stood signs with family names of all the 24 men who represented Kingholms nobility class.
The second room on the floor was the wedding hall, here the nobles got married and buried because the church was a place where everyone could go. Here were only men of the nobility class that had access. But today the room was used for the large feast that took place to celebrate the new house.
The dark basement would be built into a crypt for the members when they died.
Outside there was only gravel but it would be made a small garden with a monument.
The trade that was interrupted when Birger built the new bridge at the west of the city had led to that Kingsholm suffered heavy losses financially. To widened trade in the west, he sent workers to build a large trading harbor north of the city.
Now that the port could be exposed to a sea attack made Birger a small fortress with a great tower in the middle to protect the trade.
There was also set up three modern cannons pointing toward the river. No hostile navy would get to attack the city without a fight.
A week later at sunset was the harbor finished, many different companies had found a place on the quayside. This attracted many traders looking for work.
It was set up a small roof where hay could remain dry.
And the Sailors favorite, Kingsholm's first and only tavern was set up. It was mostly used by sailors the day before they went out sailing.
On the ground floor there was made a great bar with many kinds of beer to choose from.
While the second floor was a place where people could sleep for a reasonable price.
Birger hoped to keep the war outside the city borders and that the New harbour would continue to bring good trade in the years to come.
The sad rumors in Kingsholm was unfortunately true. Hamritch who designed the new model of the church is dead. The old architect had suffered an unknown disease that couldn't be cured. The local architect Erik Husman took over his work.
The prosperous growth in Kingsholm only got bigger, a new neighborhood with three floor buildings were now finished. And everything indicates that the tall buildings would continue to be built around the city.
In the middle of the new neighborhood it was created a small backyard, here could The homeowners hang up clothes to dry.
Birger set off a small square with trees so people would not forget how beautiful the nature is, It was easy to forget when you were surrounded by high stone buildings.
To create more space for houses, all roads in the city was built 3 meters wide instead of the currently 5 meters.
One day came a message that Borgholm has taken traders from Kingsholm and tortured them for information. The traders was later hanged in the square. This made Birger very angry, he sent orders that the guards would make the soldiers ready. Tomorrow Kingsholm will march towards Borgholm.
Soldiers were also placed on Kingshill Fortress in case Kingsholm was attacked during the military march.
Four days after they had crossed Borgholm's border they were met by a large army. Birger gave the order to set up cannons on the highest peak to give a better overview of the battlefield.
This was an attack that was going to be history, the story of Kingsholm's long march for Peace.
Kingsholm's cannons manages to kill an entire platoon of Borgholm's army.
Borgholm knew that if they destroyed Kingsholm's cannons they would gain the upper hand in the battle. They turn the cannons so they all point towards Kingsholm's artillery, they shoot and hit on the first attempt. One of the cannons are now on fire.
But Briger responds with the same tactic, the cannons are turned so they point toward Borgholms cannon wall. One shot at surface and all the cannons would end up in flames. And he succeeded, Kingsholm's shot hit and takes a portion of the surface with one of the cannons. Now it was just to wait for the rest to catch fire.
And a short time later, the entire surface caught fire with the cannons standing there. It seemed that Kingsholm would be victorious in this battle.
Birger had lost two of the cannons but the last one continued to shoot at the few soldiers who were left. Birger let the cannons do the rest of the job, he didn't want to lose more men.
Borgholm realize that the battle was lost and the last soldiers escaped to the woods in darkness of night.
This was a glorious victory, and Birger was proud of his men and he continued the march towards Borgholm.
Kingsholm's army surrounded the city and after three days the city was in control of Birger. Birgers father King Edward of Borgholm was imprisoned for life, and Just outside Borgholm city was Borgholm Castle, Birgers old home. Although Borgholm was a bigger city retained Kingsholm the title as Capital. But Borgholm castle became the main residence of King Birger, here he should stay in the winter but he came to visit Three Towers Castle in the summer.
It was a great castle, it had four buildings, four towers and a large courtyard in the middle.
The main building was the king's residence and had some impressive rooms.
One of them was the great Library.
The daily dining room.
The royal bedroom with access to the balcony.
And the great throne room, here it was ready to a large feast with kings from all around Baltika. And to celebrate the victory over the kingdom of Borgholm.
Birger now controlled Kingsholm from Borgholm Castle, he was sad but he knew Three Towers Castle was no suitable place for a king for such a large Kingdom.
After the long winter went Birger back to Kingsholm to stay in his summer residence. And he was glad to see that the work on Three Towers castle was finished. The large square was laid in stone and gravel and was named The Large Courtyard. Birger can now arrange large festivals and open the courtyard for trade.
A new neighborhood was also completed along the riverside. It was made a market next to the fortress wall, Kingsholm had grown tremendously since it was formed but it was still a small and rural capital.
The trade down at the new market was closely followed by the guards who patrolled on the wall. This Birger looked at as a positive thing, the crime rate decreased around Kingsholms markets.
One day the priest George Hamburckel arrived the castle Three Towers, he had received complaints from Germans living in Kingsholm. George said that the new neighborhood in Kingsholm was dominated by German speaking, and he demanded that it should be built a church for the German population in Kingsholm. George was a powerful priest in Europe and Birger would not go against him.
Birger said that the city park could be put in disposal for the church, but it should be twice as much green space as it was church. This could George agree with. The German architect Wilhelm Boy took the task to draw the new church in German style. With Birgers demands was it not an easy task to draw.
A few weeks later the foundation was laid and Willhem had completed the task well. German citizens had sent money to the work which resulted in more details was added.
When autumn came stood the church finished, it was an incredible sight. The German architecture was impressive. And the park was great and could be used by everyone.
A long and narrow building was added. This was the living house of German priests and church workers who went to Kingsholm.
The built was filled with beds for the many priests who came, it was also made one small reading room at the end with one large window facing the Town Hall Square.
But Birger was unable to come to the opening ceremony. He suffered a heavy fever. Doctors feared the worst, now that it just became worse and worse.
It is only to provide feedback, "what did you like, what did you not like" "Is there anything I can do better." All this helps me to make the story better for myself and for you readers. If any of you have a city yourself then you might like to tell a little about it. How is the city compared to Kingsholm? Is the River Northbron important for your city? Where is it located, Baltika? Europe? share your story and show some pictures. I maybe add your town/kingdom in the story. Hope you are enjoying my story so far.
The rumors that had gone around was unfortunately true. King Birger the founder of Kingsholm had died in his bedroom by an unknown illness. It started with a high fever and ended with him went in a coma for two weeks before the heart stopped beating. His eldest son Magnus took over as King. Magnus invited to the funeral the following day, and everyone who were invited came to the funeral.
The guards stood in formation outside at the courtyard when Birger was carried to the church. The flag was lowered to make room for the "invisible flag of death" flying above.
The new St. Nicholas church was completed two days before Birger died, he never got to see the beauty but he was eventually buried in it. And the people were sad, Birger loved the city and he was always so happy when new things were completed, he knew that people would benefit from it.
The church was decorated in flowers and the kingdom's flag. It was not added any red carpet because the church was brand new and the guests had to see the great church floor.
It was made a sarcophagus to Birger, it was majestic and was covered in granite. On the sarcophagus stood "King Birger I the founder of Kingsholm Born 1210 - Dead 1266", and the tomb was much visited.
King Magnus had a lot to learn, but he was still young and would be seen as a modern king. Three Towers Castle was old and was built like a fortress. Magnus would build the castle into a modern 1300 century castle. He started with the three major towers, they would be twice as tall and built in a mixture of stone and clay. The process was started and people were eager to see the new castle that was going to cost so much.
The people were happy that the city should get a modern setting, and they hoped that King Magnus would rule the country as his father did. A wise man went up to the king when he went for a walk in town, he said you have to think about everything you do cause you always have two choices, you could become a historic disappointment or you'd be a king who was loved and supported by the people. These were wise Words the king took back with him to the Castle.

This is very, very cool. I love the storytelling and attention to detail.
I also enjoy your world and its representation here, as well as your approach to the building process.

This is Crazy!!!
This is awesome!
Thank you all for Your support, I will do a update later today.
Hey guys, I have some computer problems thats why it hasn't been an update. Just read through it one more time and make sure you know the story
