Thank you so much for the replies everyone! They really do mean so much to me!
The idea of hosting the world and allowing contributions is an interesting idea, though I'm not sure I want to fully commit to going that route. However, I did make the world available to download, and if anyone (a single person or a team or whoever) were wanting to get together and build a project on their end, I'd definitely at least be open to effectively translating that work into my world (and every so often, I plan on updating new version of the world when enough has changed to warrant it). So long as it's not in an area I may not have anything planned for, I'd at least be open to the possibility, but please don't go and make something and expect it to go in, because I don't want to make any promises and have someone get upset with me if I don't put something in. I'm actually sort of picky-ish about it, as one of the reasons I prefer single-player is to have my world as I want it, but yeah, I'd at least be willing to consider it! A professional enough project in a locale could make it in, but yeah, I'm kind of picky about my world. Anything in the country of Zi or close to another build/locale I probably wouldn't favor, but If you want to do something somewhere, it wouldn't be a waste of time if you want to do it anyway, and it wouldn't hurt to show it here if you wish. Just remember I can't make promises, and it's probably better not to expect it to go in by default, just to be safe.
The cloud was actually intended to be a joint project by a friend and I (everything else her and I made was individually), but I can't see it happening. She lost interest, and I have so many other projects going on, so if someone wants to take it, it's available. I'd actually be really interested in putting something like that in, and I never even got around to finishing shaping the cloud (still looks rectangular-ish), and I was going to make a smaller cloud off of it where the portal would be moved to, with a small bridge (maybe a rainbow one?) connecting them. The could itself was going to have a castle on it, among other things (which we weren't sure of yet).
As for lore... I wish I could procrastinate less about writing than I do. The plan was to fill the library in the stronghold with an index of sorts, a book for each locale, person, etc., but the prospect of writing in the in-game books is just not as thrilling. That route doesn't offer as much flexibility for writing, but I still wanted to get the ideas down in writing. The bits I listed here and in the download (which may not be entirely consistent with one another, which I'd need to fix if so) are the closest I've come to that, but it's better than nothing I guess.
I haven't yet upgraded to 1.8. I'm still on 1.7.10. I've sort of been procrastinating about it a bit. I plan to eventually upgrade, but given there's no going back once I do, I want to make sure all is well. I think block IDs were changed, and custom colors in the texture pack I use (which, no kidding, I probably couldn't live without!) may need some changes for that to work, and... I've no idea how to do that. I'm also probably going to be waiting on OptiFine to see if it improves performance. In 1.7.10, I can use OptiFine and get a render distance of 28 chunks, but in 1.8, I can only get about 20 (first world problems right there, right?). That may be related to the ongoing investigation, so to speak, with performance issues in 1.8 (suspected to be water and/or lighting related?), so, as with 1.7, I'm going to wait before updating.
Also, I have a video coming for your guys! I already have it recorded, but I've got to encode it and upload it yet. It's just a short walk through the area I've been devoting so much of my time to lately. I didn't want to do screenshots since it's not "done-ish" yet, and I figured it was a nice change to still allow me to show something off a little more. Hopefully I can procrastinate less this time and have it up within a few days, but last time I said that I took forever (shame on me!).
I'm new to Multiplayer MC. I've been playing on other platforms for almost 2 years now.. if anyone wants to start a new survival world and is looking for a partner let me know. I'm looking to do some big builds but don't feel like doing it myself

How do you start a survival world with someone other than LAN, which doesn't work unless in the area? Would we have to get a host like a normal server?
you would have to host a server, which i haven't done yet. it looks confusing but if you want to start one let me know.. pm me if you want to talk more

Nah, I can't do that. I'm already running one. I was just interested in how we WOULD go about it, more than anything. Too bad there wasn't another way.
*sigh* This month has been terrible so far. I'm so very sorry everyone, but that video, and perhaps much of anything else regarding this, will have to wait. I believe my video card all but failed on me, so I've moved to another PC temporarily, which isn't as fast and doesn't have the recorded files/encoding software all on it, and I really can't be bothered to do all of that. It's probably going to be at least a good month before I can get a replacement. I need to go get some rawrs out now.
I'm back on my original PC that had the recorded content, so here's the video I promised. This is a work in progress of a new locale I'm working on, and not like an overview of my world as a whole or anything. Normally I'd have Final Fantasy music playing but I wasn't sure of copyright stuff, so I used Minecraft's own music.
I've been a bit quiet lately, which I warned I would as this thread more or less caught up to my progress I've had years of a head start on, but here's an update on my latest project and locale. I'm really happy with how it's starting to take shape. I won't highlight every change, but the major change has been completely teraforming around the river and putting in a more developed waterfront of sorts. I know there are those who like to work around the existing landscape, but I really like it much, much better now. That whole area seemed unused and a bit out of place, but I didn't want to build it up literally, so this gave that entire area between the city proper and my base in the mountain a developed look without really putting in many more buildings and such. As a bonus, it's safer, as most of the unlit area is now water (or literally more lit up).
You can take a look at the video a few posts back and compare to these pictures to see how it's changed. To highlight the main changes...
1. A waterfront development was added. This includes way too much list, as it was a complete transformation of most of the area along the river (some of which was finished a while back, but I thought then I'd leave it at that).
2. The crane was given an initial finished look (it may change slightly, but that more or less depends on if I follow through with adding a third and different transport ship docked there, which, so far, I'm leaning against).
3. I started adding more buildings to some of empty grass plots that were left in one part of the city, as well as exactly one extra whole house to the opposite end of the city (extra land space was gotten when I was teraforming along the river).
4. Work continues in the base that's within the mountain (not pictured). I've been putting a lot of work in there too.
For now, I turn my sight to the rest of the land plots that need built upon, and after that, I'm not sure exactly, but the big looming project is the airship dock. That will take up a size-able portion of the mountain, and go way, way down into the ground. Then it'll be made to look like a construction and bay dock for airships, with some planned to be in and above the mountain. With this comes development atop the mountain itself (the airship dock will be part of this, as it will have access to inside obviously for ships somewhere near the top). There is still a lot left for me to do, but I'd have it no other way. I'm enjoying working on this one, and I already prefer it here more to my (perhaps former) main city.
Oh, and I actually have another project I finished some time ago that I don't think I mentioned. One of the locales that was intended to be for a friend's friend (haha) was re-purposed. They really never played, and probably won't again, so she told me to do with it what I will. So, I basically made it into a run down city full of poverty, but also full of despair and hate, of which only needs a spark... The storyline basically ties in with the city having been destroyed and left in ruins, with most of the survivors being left to the cold, so to speak. It all ties in with the hatred brewing for Ziland. That, and it was fun to do something in a different style. I'll try and add that as an update shortly as it's a finished locale now, but it's currently unnamed.
As an unrelated side note, this temporary GeForce GTX 650 is something. I'm honestly quite impressed with this little chip for what it is (I'm still planning to upgrade though and hopefully the replacement should be here within the coming few weeks). I was worried this small chip and it's 128-bit bus wouldn't enjoy my anti-aliasing (CSAA combined with transparency super-sampling) treatment atop a very far render distance, but it runs at the same settings the old one did (albeit at a lower frame rate, it manages it).
1: Where is your ACTUAL base with your materials and such?
2: What's with all of the pink wool everywhere?
I think it's really nice, keep building!
I'm not sure I understand the question of where my "actual" base is? My original settlement was mentioned in the first post, and later I moved onto a new area which became Ziland. This is (or was) probably my "primary" locale during most of my time playing. My "base" was, simply put, a network of tunnels in the mountain with a city I grew around it (and from there, I developed a small country with more villages and cities). From there, I moved onto my "current" (when I'm playing) project and locale which is probably my new "primary" home now, but is basically the same; a network of tunnels in a mountain as a "base" or my "home" within a city.
The pink wool everywhere is because with the texture pack I use, pink wool was made to look like crates. As for why there's crates everywhere, it's really just to give some decoration around some of the cities and places. I think I had a text file with an F.A.Q. where I mentioned this.
Thanks for the comment, and I'd love to keep building but I'm more or less somewhat done with the game for now (I'm not saying for good but indefinitely at least). I mostly play with my nephew these days, which is somewhat seldom, and we don't really build up the world much at a great rate, rather we just play small sessions together. There are new additions such as an unfinished fort him and I made as well the start of the airship docks within the mountain (a small start; it was envisioned to be big) to name two major ones, among many other small things, but overall, stuff is progressing much more slowly compared to back when I (and a few others who mostly none of which play anymore) heavily worked on the world a lot.
I am absolutely enamored with your work and the effort you put behind that. I started something similar (a fantasy world complete with locales and stuff) on my multiplayer server. Your idea with the map, countries and zones is stunning and I'll be definitely going down that route as well. Thanks for posting such an inspiring content.
Also, can you give me a rundown on how did you make the image map that opens your post? I mean, I know how to render from the files and all, but I am more interested in your Photoshop technique to make it look like that!
