I know it's been done quite a number of times, but i guess there's a reason for that as well
Heres my version of a cathedral. It's more or less based on the cathedral of Reims, France, and i used it's measures for the basic lay out (1:1)
There was a discussion here the other day about how to build big buildings which inspired me to do a step by step in pictures. I'm trying to take a screenshot of every importand step.
It's still a WIP so i'm going to update this thread as i get along. It's a hell of a job, figuring it all out and things then change quite often as i go along as well
Hope you like it, and feel free to give me advice of course!
First, the ground plan (i'm not sure what's going to happen with the backside. It's just a sketch, but i guess it's a bit difficult to work with as it is now, so i'll probably have to think f somethin clever when the time comes):
Building it up, trying out how the dimensions work out:
Looks really good. Not sure how much of a step by step deal it is though...
lol.. i get so occupied by building that i often forget to take screenshots. I build and build and then i'm like "oh "#¤%, when did i take the last picture?" But it's a big step by big step series though, right? You don't want to have too many pics either.
Is that sandstone? A bit of an odd material, but it looks good.

And for two and a half thousand years, the ring passed out of all knowledge... Rumor turned into myth... myth turned into legend, and legend gave rumor and myth amiss, and went straight into autumn. ...Wait, what?
Looks wicked cool nice stuff, I think that base over top screenshot will help people a lot... I always find building the actual foundations of a building to be the toughest part.
I'm experimenting with the new quarts blocks in 1.5. What do you guys think?
I think it looks cool on the ceiling, but i'm not too sure about the pillars as they look a bit too Greek. Although they look really nice... i'm still not sure.......
I did a quick render as well just to get a better look.
Interior with the new quartz blocks. Fortunately it doesn't look too Greek, and compaired to the real thing it looks more like it. I think i keep it. (i want to build a full interior and loads of detail)

Here's the first series:

Setting up the pillars and the framework:

that picture from the front is so cool
/\ Stolen from Daemon67, who stole from Axxe127, who stole from awshox, who stole from switchs, who stole from Badgerz, who stole from Tirin.
I'd rate it 10/10

And one of those pretty minecraft moments i saw while laying out the floor
I got bats too... They must think it's a cave!

Yeah, but it's the closest i came colorwise since it's inspired by this one (Reims, France):
I'll probably add more different materials for variation later.

OMG i'm struggling with the backside, it's been taken me forever, but i finally think i've worked something out.
FAIL:
Maybe like this... I need to make those round walls between the pillars in different angles. Figure it out, with square blocks lol.
And those are no bats but an endemic species of pidgeons that need to be with every decent cathedral.
Like here:
haha, ya, that explains it lol thanks And thanks for the kind comment!
I think i finally worked something out for the backside. Here are some new screenshots (i whish i'd remember to take more..)
hehe.. thanks It's a nice challenge!
