I am a BIG Star Trek fan, and thought it would be really cool to build the huge Star Base 79 as seen in various Star Trek movies. There are 2-3 others that have created the Star Base and they are really impressive. However, they all lack accuracy to the actual Star Base. What I want to do is, within the limits of Minecraft, create as authentic a Star Base as possible. My source images will be screen shots from every Star Trek movie that features Star Base 79, and technical drawings from "Star Fleet Corps of Engineers".
This will be a MASSIVELY HUGE build!!! The bottom of the Star Base will be at Level-62 and the antenna array at the very top will peak out at level 255. When standing on the ground, one will just barely be able to see the top dry dock section.
Here are some criteria I have decided on:
[1] The entire build will be done in Survival Mode. This will create a more accurate "feel" to the building process.
[2] A base of operations will be built first to provide materials and construction support.
[3] The selected site needs to have several mines nearby, as well as access to water, forests, sand dunes, and various other sources of materials. The optimal zone for construction would be in a Grassy Plain region due to the relative flatness of the land.
[4] Every step will be documented with screenshots as the build progresses.
I would appreciate any comments and/or advice on the massive project. Thanks!
Good luck! That base will probally take 5-10 years
Thanks!
Fortunately, I have loads of images to work from and some floor plans as well.
It's the logistics that will eat up a lot of time. Taking on a project of this magnitude requires pre-planning, developing methods of construction, and managing resources. In fact, I decided to create a clone of the world I will build in. This will be used as a test site for working out how the Star Base will be built.
Just to give you an idea of what the Star Base looks like, here are some drawings and screen shots from Star Trek various movies:
Here are some drawings from Star Fleet Corps of Engineers:
Each red square on this grid represents one block in Minecraft:
There will be A LOT of circles to be made, so I created a template in Photoshop to help me build spheres and cylinders in large scale:
Here is the site I have selected to build the Star Base (using Minecraft version 1.4.5). In case you're interested, the seed for this world is 7159112078277779161, and the coordinates are X=251 x Z=334:
I found this really big rock quarry nearby. This will come in really handy when the build starts:
There will be a lot of glass needed, and this desert will be more than enough to supply me with sand:
This will be my base of operations:
That's all for now. I was up until 4:00am last night and I'm beat. Tomorrow the construction finally starts!
That MASSIVE space station, accurately, no mods, no hacks, in survival???? I'll definitely be watching this topic! Good luck with this! I enjoy watching survival builds be built.
WOW. That MASSIVE space station, accurately, no mods, no hacks, in survival???? I'll definitely be watching this topic! Good luck with this! I enjoy watching survival builds be built.
Yep! That's the plan…
At the start I did go into Creative Mode and fly around for a few hours until a suitable building site was located. Other than that, this build will be totally legit with no cheats, mods, or anything like that. I may look into creating a Star Trek themed texture pack at some point along the line?
Yesterday I cleared and leveled the site and started constructing the walls of the base. This has nothing to do specifically with the Star Base itself, but I wanted "something" for the whole thing to rest on. Here are some more pictures:
Next I made a few temporary reference lines. These will be used to make sure the Turbo Lift Core is centered properly:
Here you can see the eight Turbo Lifts that will be used for getting to all the levels of the Star Base. I have not decided on having every one of them going all the way up to the top, or have each one stopping at a particular level only? Eventually, I may have the Turbo Lifts powered with pistons, but not sure about this due to how much space those pistons take up. Any advice?
This shows the roof being added to the base of the Turbo Lift Core:
Here is a nice view of my progress until now, taken from a tower I created above the house:
I already have one of the Turbo Lifts going all the way up to level-255 and I made a glass platform to relax on. The views from level-255 are rather odd. I am so high up there that the ground is not visible, in fact, nothing at all is visible except for the moon, stars, and sun. It takes 1 minute 18 seconds to get from the base all the way to the top platform.
Thanks for the comment. The "real life" Star Base is about 12,500 feet tall (nearly 2.5 miles). If one take each block as roughly three feet high, then I would have to build up to level 4,166 if I wanted to do this at actual scale. The build has been scaled down to fit into the 255 level maximum.
Yesterday I finished making the outer shell for the first section. I have not decided what will be in this section, in fact, the interior of the entire Star Base is still undecided. The blue stripe is an identification mark for Star Base 79, and is made with blue wool.
Here are some far away shots. Keep in mind that this is just a small portion of the Star Base. It's gonna be huge!
I am not sure about using a mod to break through the 255 maximum level? Let's say the Star Base goes all the way up to level 580? If I were to someday upload it to a Minecraft server, and the server only allows 255 levels, what would happen to the Star Base? Would it not function properly because it's way beyond the servers 255 maximum height?

IIRC there are multiplayer-enabled mods (assuming the server and all clients were running the mod) that would take care of this. That said I think even scaled down this is a cool project.
Wasn't the Regula 1 Research Station a bit smaller? Granted nowhere near as "sexy" as the full-on Starbase design but I've always wanted to take a crack at doing that in vanilla (as well as maybe the "space office complex" from The Motion Picture... I think the designs for them are still up on the Star Trek LCARS Blueprints Database @cygnus-x1.net).

Thanks for the info on servers. I'm gonna keep this at the current scale, otherwise this project will take me ages to complete!

The Regula 1 Research Station is MUCH smaller and is only 520 feet tall. Star Base 79 is 12,500 feet. Yes, the plans for that base are still on the website.
The lowest sphere section is done, and next are the two modules above this. Here are some pictures of the beginning of this construction:
This gives you an idea of how high up I am working:
Getting up and down the walls was a bit tricky at first:
Some views from a distance:
This is a view from way up on one of the turbo lifts looking straight down:
On the actual Star Base there are "rings of light" between each module. To accomplish this I used glass blocks and will eventually have lighting behind them.
Working in the rain is a real pain in the ****! I swear the blocks "seem" to be a bit slippery:
The second module is done and the roof is constructed. Now onto the next one:
And yet another view showing my progress:
Some more more of the temporary stairs up the walls:
Holy crap! Looks like I've issues with Creepers!
Those temporary stairs are getting rather precarious!
That section is done, and now the roof is being added:
So… this is where I am right now.
I love this shot. It really gives you an idea of the massive size:
Well... it seems my Star Base project is SO tall right now that it is blocking out the sun! This causes a large shadow curtain all around the base of the building. Block light levels get down to "zero" in many spots. Now mobs are spawning all during the day right at where I need to be!
OK, so I am now working at such a high altitude that I am above the clouds. But... when I am up there and it's raining outside, the rain STILL falls on me.
Now I am getting into the really complex parts of the Star Base. This next phase required a lot of pre-planning on paper before construction began.
For some reason I was thinking there would be no problems with mobs way up here. Boy… was I ever wrong! Fortunately, I had my bow and arrow with me and was able to clean them up in short order. Take a look at this image taken at night:
Here is a really nice screen shot taken at sunset:
Next comes the Energy Accumulators, but first I had to build some scaffolding:
This is another view showing how high up in the air i am working:
Just starting out getting the Energy Accumulators constructed:
For those interested, this is what I am referring to:
A series of progress shots for the Energy Accumulators:

GL with this, in the past the massive projects i tried to replicate kinda got out of control.
