This is Midgar, capital of the Final Fantasy 7 world! It's a massive city with the colossal Shinra Building at its center. I know it may not be to the exact scale, but due to the height limitation, I had to considerably reduce the size of buildings. As you can see, it still is a WIP, I have only completed the Sector 1, 7 and 8 plates, all 8 reactors and the Shinra Building. Here are some pics of the construction of the frame, tower and plates.
Progress so far:

For those who don't know how Midgar is in the real game:
Since I usually only play on weekends, the progress is quite slow. Any feedback and suggestions are deeply appreciated!
color me impressed. although it seems that maybe yours isnt quite as big as the midgar from ff7
Thank you!
You're absolutely right, but since my world is default and I don't really have much time to build the real thing, I reduced it to about 1/3 (or even less) the size.
you're talented, fellow minecrafter. just throwing another idea out there, feel free to take it or leave it as you see fit; if you were to make a youtube video or a small series of youtube videos showing off/explaining some of your architectural techniques, i think people would like that. this has alot of very interesting and rarely seen techniques in it that i would love to learn how to do.
I literally have this thread bookmarked on my browser; i've already been looking at these pictures like crazy trying to absorb how you even did this... haha.

Thank you for your suggestions! Sorry, I don't know how to make videos, but I can post as many pictures you want!
The problem with building the plates in Midgar is that you only get to see a few pics of 2 or 3 streets in the real game. This isn't enough to know how the plates exactly look; how tall the buildings are, the urban layout(streets, squares, parks), what style the buildings use. We are given the information, if I'm not mistaking, that the high and middle class people live on the plate, so therefore it must look much better than the slums. Given all this, I decided to use an industrial and "bourgeois" look, using narrow checker-board streets and townhouses. After one or two hours of searching the forums for such a style, I didn't find anything. So I had to create it.
In my opinion, the style mascot would be:
Sorry if its dark, forgot to make it day before taking the screenshot. As you can see, stairs and slabs were necessary to give the building more shape and make it interesting, and yet it remains simple. The most suitable building materials were cobblestone, stone, stone bricks, bricks, stone slab, brown, gray and light-gray wool, light and dark planks and sandstone. However, I couldn't just use one of them entirely: that would make everything dull. I had to mix them together to obtain unique buildings and fit the MIdgar atmosphere. Though everything is relatively small in size (3 floors max), I still think that I have succeeded at giving it a rich look. Here are more pictures of Sector 1:
Here is a top view of the layout:
Don't forget that Sector 1 is still incomplete: I still need to make the lamp posts, wires and many other details. If anyone has other suggestions for buildings with a rich-industrial architecture, please let me know, as I will gladly use any idea that would improve the overall look of Midgar.
What kind of industrial architecture are we talking? Can you explain a little bit what you're imagining there?
This sounds like you could be talking about something similar to what I've been building quite a bit the past six weeks or so; sort of a floating spaceship dock with a few ships in it. On the decently medium sized city expansions I built into or connecting with the dock, and I went with a pretty industrial theme with almost all of it.
Could be I can give you some advice there, could be I can't, but I'd like to hear more of your plans either way. As much as you're willing to share, haha.
OH! Also, one thing I am curious about. Are you just building this to build it, or do you have some plans for it? There's no wrong answer here; it'll be a friggin' accomplishment either way.

By industrial architecture I'm imagining something similar to late 19th century European cities, with buildings very close to each other, a few floors tall, many windows and detailed, rich-looking facades. I'm using the term "industrial" because it was at the time of the industrial revolution that such an style was created. Though I have built some factories in Sector 1, I'm not necessarily talking about huge chimneys, oil tanks, refineries, etc, when referring to "industrial architecture". I could have also said "urban" or "metropolitan", but I feel like they are not exactly describing Midgar. The city is like a huge industrial-residential area, with reactors, big pipes and wires everywhere, in contrast to the rich look of the streets and structures. If you have any advice or tips, I will be very happy to hear it, as it is one of the main reasons I started this thread.
Now that you mention it, I'm not sure why I'm building this. Maybe because I've always considered Midgar to be a very cool and impressive place. I was kind of hoping for someone to give a suggestion to what to do with it once it's complete.
The outer wall surrounding the city is complete. On that side, all that is left are the unfinished plate extensions (or whatever they are) and, of course, all the small details.
Also, cleared out the large forest under the plate using mcedit for the first time. Also, the work on the central pillar has started.

Well, I'm a little far off from completing the city now, but I do plan on releasing a download or even making it a server.
Thanks guys, it really means a lot to me!
