Oh and a word of caution, since your doing it in the ocean your hardest task will be making it look jagged, impenetrable, realistic, if your a perfectionist, you may even have to create the mountains from the ground up.
The castle alone would almost be a after thought.
of course if you dont like that idea you could make it slightly hilly/(plains biome), where the area, where the castle is, like a peninsula, with the castles back towards the sea, (Imagine it like a castle in the heel of a miniturized italy.
What ever method you choose, the most important thing is realism.
On the bright side:
The castle wont seem as difficult.
I understand you but... be aware, this particular castle in fact rises up out of the water, with no dry land showing underneath it whatsoever. and the mote is so big, that The natural shores of my chosen MC sea are within a 7-10% margin of error with the target mote edges at the 1blk = 1 ft scale. you can go back and look at the 'big map' in the first update, or wait a few days for the Bohaim Castle Commencement update. But first there are two more updates coming... the mine, and the Black tower.
LOL in fact, I think Ill try out that little poll feature to let the readers decide which comes next.
Awesome Btw... I downloaded your minecraft jar and you had some pics in there haha Which is why I know... that there is some kinda black tower. But well, I won't post pics. That I'm assuming you'd like to do xP
I know the most efficient method for mining. I have used it before. It consists of long lateral lines running off a main shaft, each lateral separated by a horizontal column of untouched earth three block wide and two blocks high. Two levels down you offset the lateral shafts by two blocks to the side. That way you get to see at least one side of every block in the mine, and you only mine the ones you want.
That is not what is happening here.
/chuckle
N.o.t e.v.e.n c.l.o.s.e.
This mine is about as far from efficient as could possibly be designed. And I dont care. I will be mining literally millions of blocks during this project... and that is not an exaggeration. In fact I have already cut 160K+ blocks just boring the entry shaft, laying out the basic design and taking the beginnning of the cavern from lvl 19 down to lvl 3. And here's the deal...If Im going to pull multiple-millions of blocks out of it, it might as well be part of the project, and be as artistic as reasonably feasible.
Before I show you the photos... lets look at some stats;
Main Entry Shaft is 6W X 8HX 250L = 12,000 Blocks mined Shaft roof-braces (ttl 60) 18 wood each = 1080 wood planks Main Hall (currently) 125L X 70W X 17H = 148,750 Blocks mined Pillars (currently 45) ~250 each = 11,250 cooked smooth stone, then crafted to shape
Hours spent? [enter high-end curse word here] if I know... LOTS... but I have a system down now and the mining ops are HIGHLY efficient considering how inefficient the design may be. The relative speed is primarily due to the Backpacks mod, My BADASS armor, and a whole pile of Efficiency V enchanted diamond pickaxes. Can you believe that I never wore armor or enchanted anything during that whole Neuschwanstein castle project? Cripes!
Enough words... Behold the pics
This looks like a good spot, so first clear it and level it.
Fill in the holes
…...and …. start right there
The hole is cut, and the first tunnel-roof brace is in
Need a safe place to sleep asap... the dirt house in the distance is coming down soon... its already exploded once, lol.
This is as good as its going to look from the ground out here, so might as well get a shot
The shaft is coming along now... about 100 blocks long and drops about 20 lvls now
A place to store all that freshly mined stone
This was a poor decision; outdoor storage... I experienced numerous chest explosions with contents scattered all over thanks to our green lil buddies :/
Aaaaaand, bedrock
Now, the shaft is cut and the 60 braqces are in and the whole thin is lit.... time to go back in and tidy up the dirt/ore/coal blocks so the walls ceilings will look good.
Gonna need somewhere around 1500 smooth stone to fill in the holes. Time for an oven complex. First try at using colored torches mod. Not really necessary for tyhis, but I predict tahat they will come in VERY usefull as I start to build monster castles.
Basic footprint
The oven well
Floors and stairs in
Go large or go home... 64 ovens incoming
4 banks of 16 ovens...
LOVE the chimneys (fireplace mod), wish they made heavier smoke, and wish it could be seen from further away.
Roofs going on
Done
This furnace well will be dedicated to cooking cobblestone into smooth stome, but... it takes 4096 charcoal to fill 64 ovens, and that takes all my coal to make that much charcoal... and... thats a LOT of wood.
The Main Hall
cut in a decently large room 5 blocks high, and figure out how to start building the pillars... basically from the top down (welcome to no-flying).
First I laid out some basic geometry with colored torches... yep, they will definitely come in handy later.
So, I made like ten attempts and tore them all out, then figured out that I should be experimenting upside down and started to make some real headway
Then, Whallah!
Now to build one from the ceiling down right next to it. Notice the sloped blocks? Im gonna get a LOT of satisfaction out of these, but be aware, they are VERY ingredient hungry. Tales a LOT of smooth stone to make them.
OK, This was a HELLOFALOT harder than it looks. Now after 45 of these, I have a MUCH quicker method, and dont get confused anymore, but !@#$%^&! this was a pisser.
And add in its next door neighbor with a nice arch between them
GOOD ENOUGH! Now to fill in the ceiling while I can still reach it.
Bring the flors down a couple levels and finally... the pillar itself... sigh.
/pause.... I have to tell you that the final product seems to be worth it, now that the mine is starting to become of large enough scope, but from the time I hit bedrock to this point was probably 30 hours of game play.... Friends, unless you enjoy frustration, failure, and tedium... I do not recommend this challenge. Fair warning.
Bringing the pillars down as the floors come down
Finally, all the way to the floor
But I would like a pillar base. THIS TIME I'm building the damn prototype outside where I can see it.... and out of dirt so I can make edits quicker.
BONUS #1 Obsidian I didnt keep count, but I harvested somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 stacks of the stuff... Got REALLY damn good at it too. But also have all I need for the forseeable future stored in a VERY safe place, so I came up with a trick to get rid of lava without using water. I just filled the whole pit up with gravel... 40 stacks of the stuff. And had to recycle it twice....
It sinks in lava just like it does in water so you can just stack it in 8-10 deep or deeper.
BONUS #2 This mine exists under a pretty big ocean... and coolest thing ever... there is a hole in the floor of the ocean. A BIG hole. Im currently working around it and plan to leave in falling all the way to the floor of the mine.
The final update photos... hope you enjoy these as much as I am proud of them. The Mine Including the central path, and the tiled floor going in (works in progress)
And, the reason for all this work... the dark ceiling.
Trust me, it really takes a personal walk through the mine to appreciate it, and I hope yo uwill all take that walk soon, but Im not putting a world DL on here until I have finished the Black Tower update. Gotta keep that secret for a bit yet.
As always, your comments both critical and construcive will be most welcomed.
Holly muther of bbqjezu-!@@$%#.... That is beautiful... You made amazing work of thoughs stone arches. You deserve some diamonds, but I'm guessing you already have plenty so I won't give you any. MAN dedication to the craft. I have a question, how long have you been playing Minecraft? As in what version did you start in?
WOW!!! Something like this requires some serious dedication and time. And you sir, are the most dedicated and best survival builder in the history Minecraft!!!! I just have no clue how you do it...
From what I have seen, your ambitious project is actually feasable. I cant believe how amazing this is, and I will be bookmarking this thread to check up on later. Thank you for this highlight.

Swervish you need to update NOW. No ifs ands or buts. BUT. I would just like to say you inspired me to make Arundel Castle. It will be very fun. I am building it in survival just like you. Any tips or advice you can give me?
Hey swervish, have you ever thought about using Redpower to mine out everything in your mine? A Redpower miner is a very complex build but if you could make it you could automate mining, that way you have more time to build!!!
Thanks for the suggestion, but with Efficiency V on my pickaxes, I can mine EVERYTHING at run speed. Thats fast enough for me.

No you didnt.
Its 140 blocks high and contains my crafting table in the laboratory at the top.
And frankly, it being the only real 'non-historic' structure I have ever built, I think it is breathtakingly beautiful if I do say so myself.
But, the mine aint shabby neither
lol orlly? Maybe It's not the same one but I can show you some pics :3
Btw whatever it is that you built is indeed breathtakingly beautiful. Be it this black tower or not.
It will be up in about 30 minutes.

Again, AMAZING WORK!!!
I think I started in 1.5, but updated to 1.8.1 within a couple of weeks from starting.
Tried a couple servers... but couldnt hack the uber-gubers found there.
Im a soloist.
That is awesome, my internet is to sucky to be anything but a soloist :3
You inspire me to make my creations better, with what time I have to do so
Can't wait for more updates x.x
