First time I've minecrafted in about a week, but I successfully widened that new 5th rate I was working on. I'm much happier with the hull shape now. Don''t know when I'll get around to finishing it though.

Looking very good! Maybe you should try working on your sterns a tiny bit, a little bit of fancy shaping will go a long way to making the overall build be better.

Discipline, Pride, and Courage. A dangerous combination.
Hmm yeah, the stern is a bit back to my older style. I liked the improvements I made for the stern on my 2nd rate, but going from a stern with three decks of cabins to only one deck did throw me off a bit.
Shipyards everywhere! Big plus for the detailed descriptions and history that you've added for each ship.
Yeah, there's a few of us! I think it's great having the other guys, because it helps to motivate and inspire me. And we're all in a pretty good position to offer advice to each other.
Nice to hear that you like the descriptions. I might go back and improve/update them at some point.
Allrighty, I didn't want to do it, but my own shipyard thread is totally lame. CaC, I'd love it if you stopped by and gave opinions. http://www.minecraft...bahns-shipyard/
(Sorry, I swear it'll be the only time I ever post a link like that DX )
I don't mind at all! I'll stop by your thread whenever I notice it.
My new 5th rate has had a little progress over the weekend, and it's now at the stage of being finsihed in an anchored state. I just need to do the version with the sails set, and this one will be finished. She's looking like this.
Or how about the view from the gunnery spotting tower of an Iron Duke class battleship, with a couple of 2nd rates in the background?
Very nice, as always! I must say, I like how you build them both at anchor and under sail. It's amazing how much the feel of the ship changes between those two states. =D

...actually, created is a bit much.... Thought of. That's more accurate.

Yeah, that's why I do it. And as long as you've got World Edit handy it's really easy to do. Just a quick select the area, copy and paste, build sails on the pasted one. I've started saving them as schematics now, a different schematic for each state I need to save schematics for all the older ones too and I'll be able to quickly populate an ocean. Load and paste, load and paste.
That 1st Rate is beautiful... heck they're all beautiful :3
Thanks! I'm pretty pleased you picked out the 1st rate actually, since she's my very first ship and I tend to alternate between being incredibly proud of her and wanting to 'upgrade' her to incorporate some of the things I've learnt since building her.
I've just been sailmaking on my new 5th rate. The sails are done on the bowsprit and foremast, and she has a main course. Just need to do the main topsail and topgallant and the mizzen sails, then find a nice place in my ocean map to drop her and start taking screenshots.
I'm also wondering what I might build next. I'm thinking a brigantine is high on the list, and I'm also tempted to try a smuggler's ship, probably a small ketch or something. And another 3rd rate. And another 1st rate. And a post ship. And a ship-sloop. And...
Maybe try moving a few ships into a Line of Battle and show us what it looks like? Might be neat to see.
I'm tempted, but I'd also quite like to wait until I've got even more ships to choose from. At least one more 74 so that I don't have a line of identical 74s, and an improved 1st rate. Then I could create quite a good battle squadron, I think.
To be honest, I was never impressed by RN ship names. I liked Dauntless and the exploratory Endeavour, but I always thought that French names had more of the beauty of a ship in them, like the frigate La Fleur, the Flower. And Victory rings of pompousness, does it not?
And I suppose using wood stripes works better for the interior, but I will not change! But, the wood looks good with your texture pack. I tried using KDS but I switched when I saw my Endeavour with those...bands of "color"
As for the 2nd Rates, yep, poor man's first rate is the perfect way to describe them!
Also, have you noticed that when you choose italics or the like, type the word, turn it off, and continue with normal writing, whenever you press Backspace you go straight to the italic word?
About the ship names, did you know that in 1813 there was actually an HMS Nimrod? And about the italics, I personally have noticed it and it is highly annoying.

There's been several HMS Nimrods. Names after a Biblical figure. Several RAF planes too. And an Israeli missile system...
I've been building another small ship, a smuggler's ketch. And it's been one of the motivators for me to want to do something that I've been contemplating for a while - editing some textures. I love the KDS Photorealism pack that I've been using for about a year now, but there's plenty of scope to tweak it for shipbuilding - especially when it's just for shipbuilding and any block that isn't used in my ships is fair game to be redesigned.
The reason I fancied changing some textures for the ketch is that I wanted it to have tanned sails. The colour I had in mind for them was a sort of pale brown, the idea being that it would make them harder for the customs men to spot - as well as lasting longer than non-tanned sails. But of course there's no colour of wool to match that.
So, I've started making my variant on Photorealism to change blocks that I don't use into ones that I will. Some of the brighter wools like pink, yellow and purple have become cream, off white and tan for potential sail variants. I've experimented with trying a couple of different shades on the wood texture in addition to the four that are there already. And perhaps most interestingly I've been starting to create some blocks to represent the stern galleries better than my current method of alternating between gold blocks and black wool. And with quite a lot of blocks available to be retextured, I'm probably going to create quite a few.
So, so far I have these new colours of wool that I can use for sails -
I'll probably stick with plain white for my larger warships since that seems to suit them. But for others I might experiment with whatever colour I feel like at the time.
Here's the first peek at my smuggler's ketch with the darker shade for its furled sails -
A pretty small ship, that one. Not unlike a stretched version of my cutter, really, but with a couple of sternchaser guns in case the customs men get too close, and a small boat to put men ashore with their illicit goods. I'm still not entirely happy with that shade of wool so I might tweak it some more.
And finally, the stern blocks. First off, here's a reminder of how the stern of my 2nd rate looked before -
And here's how it's looking with the first few stern blocks I've created. I'm probably going to do several more, depending on how many other blocks I feel I can repurpose. I'll mess with the stern more once I do. This is just a test run to see how the new blocks look. I'm pretty pleased though. It's a massive improvement over what I had before. The disadvantages are that I'll need to stick to using the modified texture pack and that I won't be able to use the ships in a more 'normal' map that uses the blocks I've redesigned. I'd probably have to reconvert them to gold blocks and black wool blocks in that case...
And finally a note - I won't be putting up a link to the texture pack. If I'd created one entirely myself, then yes. But this is KDS's work that I've been modifying and so I won't start distributing it. Sorry.
Looks great!
You know, you could create a ship texture pack, with help from other people. It'd be pretty handy.
Thanks. I wouldn't know where to begin with creating a texture pack from scratch! I suppose doing this is a handy first step towards learning, though.
I've added some sails to that Smuggler's Ketch tonight. I still might tweak the sail colour (I think it's looking too yellow/green, needs a prod towards the redder end of the spectrum, I think), and I need to give it a nice spot in my main ocean map, then I'll take some more screenshots and add it to the first post.
I'm still not sure what to do after that. I've still got a brigantine trader in mind, and a post-ship, and another 74, an 80, a 120...
