I'm here today to talk about the build that I have been working on for roughly 2-3 weeks. I started a while back, thinking of making a cathedral. I was inspired by some YouTube videos, so I got to work. I started hoarding materials, casually asking for a stack of cobble from other players, and things like this. I started a blaze farm, got enough rods to smelt what I needed for the walls. I went mining, asked people if they found lapis to give it to me, in exchange for half. When I finally got down to building, I was quite excited. I first laid out the front towers, because those were the first things I could think of. I looked at some images from Google, and got to work. When the first two towers were done, I was pleased with their outcome.
I had a fun time, it was great. Then I realized, I needed to build the rest. So I started over, hoarding materials, etc, until I had enough to start working on the main hallway-type-thing.
When I was satisfied with the walls, I moved up. I got on the roof. It hit me. I was stricken with a creative block. I had no idea what to do for the roof. I ended up just melting a whole bunch of excess sand into glass, and building a 1:2 incline glass roof.
Now that most of the place is done, I feel like I've done something terribly wrong. It looks... disproportionate. I tried adding some details, but it was to no avail. I'm stuck.
If I tear down the roof, I need to make more glass. If I don't I'll be forever demotivated to continue. I need to know how I can make the roof, so that it's not so... awkward.
Night: (I feel it looks better at night, that's what these are first.)
So my guess is that the main building with the glass roof isn't long enough. It's only slight longer than the front towers are wide, you probably want closer to twice as long. Just a guess. I'm building a cathedral myself on a survival server so I feel your pain.
The last few days I've spent reshaping this project, and I think I am starting to like it a bit more than I did before. I did added some designs, and made the front parts of the towers fit better with the motif of the build. I added some fancy staircase designs, and am in preparation mode for 1.2 when the server updates for the upside-down stairs. The main portion of the time spent was done lengthening and re-making the roof; I make it twice as long, and then out of wood. I have also re-modelled the front facade. I plan on changing the backward-facing stairs to upside-down stairs in 1.2.
Here's what I have so far:
Here's the kicker. I tore down all of the glass, and replaced it with wood planks.
Next I think I am going to make the roof come to a sharper point, with a non-linear curved roof. the flat one isn't looking nice for me right now.
I like the wooden roof better than the glass roof definitely :)... And I know how you feel - I'm fussy too - there's nothing worse than finishing your masterpiece and finding out you've counted the blocks wrong
