Some of you may be familiar with my work (I'm Chesham over at PMC), and I normally like to post stuff when it's finished/semi-finished, but that takes a while on longer projects! So I figured hey, I'll post some pictures here and see what people think.
I would love for suggestions on things to add to this build or things to change, just keep in mind that this is currently a WIP and knowing me, things will change as I get farther in to the project (the balloon was originally not going to be a balloon, and I had a propeller built for it.. xD) Anyway, on the the pictures! I'll try to keep posting new pictures as I add things, I'm currently working on this kinda on and off, in between playing tf2 and working and sleeping.. etc.
This is a... dam, of sorts.
Currently the biggest building, it's a palace of some sort I think.. xD
The gardens, with the balloon in the background.
Gardens again. They're not finished, I quit working on them to do the palace.
When I'm finished I'll most likely be posting a world save over on PMC, so stay tuned. :wink.gif:
Edit: These are just the pictures I posted at first, if you'd like to see all the pictures from this project go to this album, rather than reading the whole thread. :wink.gif:
Kanja - Yeah, terrain was made with Voxelsniper, I love terraforming so I start by doing that and then building something with the terrain. :wink.gif:
relapseee - Funny thing is, I feel the same way about bridges, I like to have them look properly supported. I just couldn't come up with something that I liked so I just left it how it was. I think there's some minor supports at the edges on the one side, I may have to work on it a bit more. :wink.gif: If nothing else, we'll just call it a magic bridge.
I'm really impressed with your dam, especially the way you made it by digging into a swamp. I've thought about building one myself, but couldn't think of a way to make it work without looking really fake. I agree with thickening its walls a bit. Also, don't know if this is already there since I can't see the base of the dam, but I'd suggest adding a small 'spillway' near the bottom. In this case you could make a small hole in the dam wall near the bottom and place some water in there.
Also, bonus points for working with the terrain.
And with the bridge, instead of pillars that would dominate the landscape below and ruin the look of the lower footbridge, what you could do is make curved-in supports at the ends, similar to what you did for the bridge shown in the long view, coming out from the walls so that the bridges look more real without taking over everything. I could make a quick sketch if you want a better idea of what I mean.
Gidvon - yeah, I'll have to try something like that. Curved supports get hard when the bridge is curving too though. :tongue.gif:
..and it's not a dam strictly speaking, it controls the flow of water but it's not exactly holding back a ton of water. Didn't know what else to call it though.
Yeah, a lot of thing get harder when they're is curved: roads, bridges, rooftops. The peaked roof I made on a ring-shaped
theater was particularly challenging. Right now I'm working on a building where not only the walls are circular, but the tops of those walls are curved in too!

That's pretty much too awesome for it's own good. Lots of very well done details and an over-all style that's creative and not something just anyone can think of, If I were wearing a hat it'd be off to you, sir.
