This is Skibum's Minecraft Journal. Here I will chronicle the development of a Minecraft world through text and pictures. What I am doing is modeled of City Journals (CJs), which are part of many SimCity forums. What I hope to achieve is a Minecraft adaptation of a CJ, in which you can watch my world develop from its humble beginnings into a prospering compound. At first, I may go day by day, while developments to the world are smaller and more noticeable. As my world grows, and larger projects are begun, posts may cover larger amounts of time.

Entry 1: Settling In
I spawn on the usual beach. It's fairly wide, a lush forest is spreads over the hills to the north and west. An exposed pool of surface lava bubbles in the sand.
A wolf interrupts me as I harvest wood. I have no bones on me, but it's good to know that they will spawn in these woods.
After meandering through the trees, I discover a grassland to the northwest, and a valley just north of the spawn. I decide to shelter in the valley.
I begin to dig into the side of a cliff as the sun begins to set over the trees.
I crafted some torches from charcoal, 2 furnaces, some tools and a small chest. After exhausting my wood supply preparing tools for the next day, I have none left to make a bed, and wait out the night the old fashioned way.
A look at my inventory at the end of the day:
A screenshot of my world marked with the spawn, my shelter, and the approximate route I took. (So you can get the lay of the land). Note: This image was generated with MCMapLive, which is the only world renderer I know of for mac. If you know of one with greater capabilities or detail please let me know!
Please give me your feedback, and stay tuned for entry 2!
In the mornings, I dealt with large amounts of mobs, particularly creepers. There were 2 explosions of creepers, one directly in from of my shelter, and another, which unearthed a deep pit.
My primary task over the second day was to harvest wood and gather sand and other basic resources. In the process, I found this guy:
And soon he was mine.
And it turned out his name is 69...
69 and I also did a bit of looking around the area.
We found a massive pit that appears to lead to a cave system. This could very well be my first mine, considering I am so low on coal.
A large ocean surrounds the area to the north and the east. Here I am looking out to the east, which is the less expansive ocean.
Most of the nearby area is heavily forested. I don't know if it is rainforest or just normal forest.
Looking out from a hill over the area. Beneath this hill is my shelter.
I also found a large stash of red mushrooms.
Work began on a house, and after a day, this is what was built:
The house grows...
..and grows.
The Cube (unofficial name) is not near finished. As you can see, it is quite hideous. As I become more resource-rich, I will be able to afford embellishments. As of now, the plan is to turn it into a multi-tiered lookout tower and beacon. Let me know your thoughts for improvements.
Here's a look at The Cube from afar. Nestled in the base of the hill on the left is my shelter.
A few modifications to the original shelter. The area on the back will be turned into a crude mineshaft. As you can see, a bed was also added.
My inventory after the three day period it took to build The Cube.
A map showing the progress I made. You can see the ocean to the east (right side) of the image. To the north is the larger ocean.

Entry 3: Building Cube Tower
In this entry, the house and tower gets finished. I’m reasonably happy with how it came out. It looks a bit awkward from a few angles. Since it’s not really a cube any more, I’ll call it Cube Tower.
Before I started, though, I had to cut down some trees. I deforested a fairly vast amount of land.
Here are some pictures I took while building:
Also, I ran into a few problems. A creeper blew out the corner of the building, causing minor damage. Fortunately, the insurance covered the damages.
Also, while backing up to take a photo, I fell into one of the large holes, and lost all but half of a heart. This prompted me to surround the hole with fence.
Also, I fixed the creeper blast in front of my shelter, and flattened out the sand.
Here are some shots of the finished house. You can see what I mean by it looking a bit odd…
It looks better from on top.
The interior of the bottom floor:
The view from the top, looking south.
And, as usual, my inventory at the end of all this:
Yes, I have a lot of pork. Got to get around to cooking that. Here’s what it looks like from the world renderer:
If you have any ideas about Cube Tower and how I can improve it, please let me know!
In entry 4, we will start a mining/caving operation from inside the shelter and get some iron and maybe a few diamonds!
I was skimming the screenshot section to come upon this in the rough of other cool things, but this is just so in depth and relatable, it must take quite a while to record and remember all of the occurences but it seems worth it, probably both for you and the viewer, so hats off to you for your hard work! As for ides from my part you could build a bow for your adventures whilst mining because i personaly find it quite hard to hit a skelly with a sword and for the cube tower you could create an underground bunker directly under it, one of those is always useful. If I have any other ideas i will post them after the next entry, but until then good luck and please keep posting, I'm excited for the next entry!
Watched the topic, so I can keep up on this. :smile.gif: I had a City Journal a year ago, and absolutely loved it. <3 I might just make one of these too!
Oh, and here is some coal.
By the way, what do you use to capture the world render?

The world renderer is from MCedit. At the time, it was the only one available for mac. I haven't researched others really.

Glad you like it! I like the idea of a basement/emergency shelter/storeroom. That'll be the next entry maybe! And the bow is a good idea. I was trying to kill a few spiders to get the string, although I refrained from making it because I had only 4 or 5 arrows. i'll be collecting gravel soon also, to make more arrows.

MCEdit? Really? :ohmy.gif: Maybe I need to search around on the options; I've never seen that!

All I did with the options was change the orientation. What you see in red, yellow, and blue in the image are things I added in with powerpoint.
I realized I was no where near ready supply-wise to go down into the caves and battle monsters. Part of this is because my right hand was crushed between some large chunks of metal and my fingers have swollen. Also, I really had no supplies. So, I decided to make cube tower look less awkward, and I think I did a good job!
At the suggestion of Samaca, I built a basement in Cube Tower. It's not much yet, just a crafting box. Might become a storage chamber, or the entrance to a mine. I really like the sand walls, and sandstone/stone floor.
I also found a gravel island, which was great, since I needed arrows. I may set up a small operation on the island. I got about 100 useless gravel blocks, and 14 flint.
69 and I did a bit of hunting on our way back from the island.
Smelted a whole bunch of wood into charcoal for torches.
I moved my inventory into the large chest in Cube Tower! The shelter will now be primarily used as a mining office. As you can see, I am pretty well prepared for my descent into the earth. An iron sword and bucket would be nice...
In the next entry, we'll start mining! (For real this time).

Yes you are right! Excuse me. Don't know what I was thinking.
Ah, it's alright. :smile.gif: I didn't know you were running on a Mac, so I downloaded Minemapper instead. xD
