Well as with everything that I tend to do in this game the humblest of plans seems to evolve and take on a life far greater than what I originally intended. This one seems to have taken this principle and and put it on steroids.
So I am going to do something that when I started seemed quite out of reach. The plan is to rebuild loosely a forest from the moon Pandora from James' Camerons movie Avatar.
This project started as an experiment with bonemeal to see its effect on trees and the viability of building structures made from wood blocks. I saw a thread in this forum regarding Giant Trees and a request to build them so I had a go and made this...
I really liked the result and made plans to build a small amount of these trees and a base encompassing the canopies linked by sky bridges.
So what started as one tree became 4 Each time improving and varying the design. It now stands at 6 with 3 half completed. No 2 trees are the same as I am free-building them all with no real plan or template as such. All stand within 10 blocks of the map height maximum most starting from around sea level. As previously stated the plan is to make 15-20 large trees and many smaller trees. Each tree spans a minimum area 45 x 45 understated as I have never counted the blocks but I know the rough dimensions of the trees.
Each tree is almost a megaproject in itself. The trunks are all build from hand and the trees planted in the branches and then spawned with bonemeal. I light up the canopies because of the damn :smile.gif: . The 1st 4 trees were all legitimately farmed for materials. However it soon became apparent that I was spending more time waiting (tree farms don't do anything unless you are in range of the chunks they are located on) and farming wood and bonemeal than I was building and the project stagnated because it felt like a job. So as this is being built on my SMP server I have decided to use spawning commands to allocate myself resources. After all this about fun and not grinding. I make no apologies to the purists because I have a life and I want to build awesomely epic stuff also.
Since my last update in the other thread I have completed 2 more trees.
I also selected the site for Home tree. The home tree is expected to be larger than anything by a factor of perhaps 4 or more. I need to build it and see where it goes really. To accomodate such a large tree I need to artificially create a valley. In this case a valley to the bottom of the map.
After much procrastination I selected a site.
And then with a few others with a crapload of tnt and a few nervous moments we made it look like this...
and then finally this...
and yes many golden apples were required due to "Friendly fire"
So with a level site a template for rough position was made to blast down was made and a pilot shaft was blasted. Most amusing was when I invited people to have a look and they neglected to press "Shift".
So as an update this is where the project stands
From the bottom of the valley - Adminium level
From above
From East
View back towards forest under construction
I expect this project to take me many weeks as I have other mega projects and maintenance on my server that also needs my attention. I will update as I am able.
UPDATE: 9/3/11 Had more time than I thought I would today. I have now reached the bottom of my very rough trunk template. I am now clearing out an area 15 -20 blocks around the base to accomodate the trunk sub-columns. Once that is done I can level off the base for the gardens and river and start the trunks build.
Birds eye view
UPDATE: 11/3/11 had more time today to work on the blasting. Blasting of the tree lower trunk and root space is nearly complete. About 75% done in fact. I have found however a very large lava lake system right where is is extraordinarily inconvenient to have one. I will deal with that when it becomes an issue.
So once I have blasted out the root space I can then remove the tnt racks I was using to mass drop tnt and perhaps I can show a cart detailing my plans for the surrounding terraforming / landscaping.
Looking up about halfway through the blasting operation. Mainly clearing water and lava as required.
Top down view of 75% complete blasting racks. Will be cleaned up afterwards.
UPDATE: 14/3/11 Ok so I have finished blasting out the bottom of the map to the dimensions required. Man that took ages and now looks like this:
I them embarked on a frenzy of activity as I had a day to myself minus children and managed to level out the bottom and grow grow grass onto it and then started to blast out a ravine for my future river. I also started the 8 lower trunks that will combine into a large single trunk for my design. Oh and I added a huge ass waterfall which may or may not stay... Pics!!
More to come
Update 17/7/2011
Ok so after an extended absence from the game mostly thanks to a crushing work schedule I have been able to resume work on the Pandora Megaproject. Was a bit slow to start as I had to go and replace all minecart systems currently in place on the server. I think that perhaps i got carried away with it when I said I was going to build a stupidly elaborate minecart system....
Anyways to get the project back on track I used MC-Edit to trim out the top lip of the blast hole and cut and levelled some of the base to save about 40hrs of mind crushing manual digging.
I didn't like the waterfall in its current for so I blocked off all the water and removed it. I have something somewhat better in mind and
Terraforming of the valley can now and has begun in earnest. Almost everything that you see now will be unrecognisable once cpmplete. All slopes are to be contoured out as you can see I have started to do. There will be a series of terraced waterfalls and rivers winding down the bank. I may try to stealth in a EATS road amongst the terraces. The valley sides will be totally revegetated with enormous trees and if I can get grass to grow this also.
There is a rail link into the tree but its not advisable to attempt to ride it back as it contains an unpleasant suprise.
Updated 25th August 2011 - Been little bits here and there. The valley and terraced waterfalls are starting to take shape on the western valley.
Update 7th Sept 2011
Work is progressing steadily on terraforming the valley now. I do a an hour or so when I can.
Started using the water shader mod. Looks AWESOME!!!
View from up high above valley. Finished the west side. Working on the south now.
Looking up from the bottom of the valley south west.
Update 23/10/2011
Ok so terraforming is now 80% complete. I haven't posted progress in a while but here is where its at.
Western Wall complete @ 20/09/2011
Work is progressing on the Northern face...
And starting to take shape...
More progress...
Northen face complete!
View from valley floor.
View from the air
Altered the coastline to make the southern face more realistic. More needs to be done here...
The Eastern face will get a excavation so and water removed so that I can build a subterranean tree city in there as I have been undecided on what to do with that side.
Progress mostly due to annual leave.... Tree and landscaping gets started really soon I am hoping!
23/10/2011 More progress made. Had a friend help me do a heap of digging switching to creative to do so!
Cutting out mountains to make the start of the floating mountains.
Tree is now getting a skeleton and fleshing out the twisted lower trunks and roots.
Update 25/10/2011
And so now the building begins in earnest. Not much done today unfortunately but you can start to see how big the tree will actually be when finished. I must admit I did feel a bit overwhelmed when I wireframed it and I started to figure out and realise the enormity of what is yet to be done...

1st guide for branches
Overhead
I may need to reduce the size of the base to fit better with the scale of it. Its all completely freebuild so the planning is whatever takes my fancy at the time I guess.
Aw, man you should have started with the Glacier seed. It has some of the floating rocks with waterfalls already built naturally.
So far it looks cool. Hmm redstone :lightbulb
Project started prior to 1.3
I have areas on my map the same as glacier. The Glacier terrain wouldn't allow me to build these trees anyways. Only suitable if I expand into building the Ehwa tree and the surrounding floating islands.
I wanna at least finish this project and others 1st before I take on another megaproject.
It's seriously amazing so far, but the only thing that will be pretty difficult is those uh....what were they called? The heaven mountains or something? Whatever, the mountains that were floating in the sky. It'd be pretty difficult FIRST just making them, and then making them look natural. And you'd have to make like atleast 20 fairly large ones.....

Punch a tree. Punch another. Punch until my hand is broken, bloody, and infected.
I think you've just earned yourself a chocolate flavoured milk.

I hate to be the storm cloud on this marvelous endeavor, but I don't think the minecraft world is tall enough to make this feasable. You know what would be amazing?
If the save format was updated (lol again) to take into account infinite (or at least greatly increased) height. I think rather than chunks, we could use 32x32x32 cubes (they have the same volume as current chunks, and would be much more suited to expanding forever in all directions, and each region file could be independently converted into the new format, and would take up about the same disk space and have the same block volume).
I would really like to see some sort of infinite height capability so we can build megatall structures.
i did too come here expecting Borderlands, sadly (for me) is Avatar, i Hate Avatar..
But good luck to you, as i see you gonna make this pretty epic, i know tha the fans of the movie gonna love it ;3

Started off as I was just going to create an Elvandar type city. A city in the trees. It got out of control from there...
Although It can never be the same look as the movie due to block limitations it will be my Minecraft interpretation of it
