:cool.gif: build it out of obsidian. Obsidian castle ftw.
Obsidian is sorta the EZ mode. For the sake of this thread we are keeping the use of it to a minimum. A wall fully composed of obsidian ain't all that interesting.

That's a nice wall you've got there... It would be to bad if it was DESTROYED!
BOOM!
Hahahahahah- Wait, what? It's intact? I see, Gravel fell down and blocked my hole! Damn it!

There's nothing more you can do to design a wall, except for maybe dispenser traps, total hacked materials or redstone codes. Being spider-proof is easy, being creeper proof is easy too, as a simple pressure plate beside a dispenser will hit them back, or cactus will hurt them and fire will burn them.
That was disproven. They will sometimes have trouble getting started and appear unable to do it (as shown in the video thread), but they can indeed climb soulsand. Unfortunately, it also does not make them climb it slowly.

Minecraft is a game about placing blocks to build anything you can imagine. (Source)
Anything built within Minecraft, using only Minecraft, without using bugs, is legit.
If you don't want to build mob traps, that's fine. Just don't tell us it's cheating.

Alright, so after testing a bit, this design seemed to destroy every single string! However, the only way I was able to test it was by luring spiders, which was REALLY slow, and I only got a sample of about 3. Anyway, here's my improved version, which seemed to keep every string, but still, conformation would be nice.
<-----Glass for a below-floor glow via fire.
[] [] [] <-----Fire kills Spiders.
[] <-----Netherrack for perma-fire. These are placed every other "section"
Next One would be like this, because there is no Netherrack used:
<-----Glass for a below-floor glow via fire.
[] [] [] [] <-----Fire kills Spiders.
[] <----- NO Netherrack.
When building a wall, alternate between the two. Anyway, some form of Cacti trap may cut the bill, I am sure. However, I have no way of reliably generating spiders, someone with Single-Player commands would be more apt to testing this...
And here's a picture of my idea, just to show how the new source blocks affect the drops. Also, this forces the spiders back, letting them burn slightly slower, and farther from the fire. This is good, as the speed of death is not a huge issue.
EDIT: From looking at various amounts of data, from the spawner-based system, it seems as though the original works quite well, or at least better than the "improved" one!
Now I just need to find a way to get the string
The top-right lava is a sourceblock. The top-left water is a source block.
Note how you only need one source per segment.
So what does the water and lava actually do? Regenerating wall?

It said it the linked video that you need one source block per level per segment. So it could take 10 source blocks for a single segment O.o
And 8 wide? Damn that's a thick wall.

After you have built this house, gather 500 obsidian, then build a 5x5 spider proof house with a mob trap.

Interesting wall design. I made a few very effective ones back in the day (mid-2010), but I haven't bothered to update them utilizing netherrack, fences, etc. Maybe I'll take your challenge and design something better later. :wink.gif:

Here's with Img tags, however, that doesn't appear to work, so here is the direct link: http://img193.imageshack.us/i/spiderkiller.jpg/
And here is a save file, for those who would rather improve my design. Note that there are about 8 spider spawners nearby!
