I didn't follow a tutorial when I started making these, so I don't know if there are any out there. If there aren't, I'll write something up real quick that should be easy to follow. This is for Photoshop, I'm not sure how simple it would be to convert over to something like Paint.net or GIMP.
What I do is make a huge template, like 1000x1000. Why? It makes it easier when you're making more than one. Put them all on one page, save as a png, open the png and cut them out into a new template that is the perfect size. If you're using Photoshop, it conforms to the height and width of whatever you have copied, so this works well.
Use the font linked in my thread (click my signature), made by Mad Pixel.
1. Write your text, sized 55px.
2. Click the button.
3. Select arc and slide it back down to zero. Put the vertical distortion slider to +5.
4. Go to your blending options (double click space next to your layer) and put a 5px stroke with the color of your choice.
5. Make a new layer and be sure it's below the text.
6. Using the square selection tool, make a box under the text and fill it with the stroke color. To get that, use the eydropper tool.
7. Fill in spaces behind the text. In odd spaces, like between an L and another letter, fill it to where you see fit.
8. Right click your text layer and rasterize it. Merge it down with the fill layer.
9. Using the polygano lasso tool, select the text at the corner. Hold shift to keep the line straight and make the selection all the way to the bottom, then back around to the beginning. It should look like this:
10. Repeat on the other side.
11. Cut a straight line off of the bottom. Leave enough space for text if you want to add some.
12. Next you want to put another stroke around the entire thing, 3px. Choose a flattering color. If you want to add a drop shadow, do so now.
13. This is optional, but I like to darken the bottom half for depth. Select the bottom half but leave a little space under the lettering - remember, you put the 5px stroke so you want to leave enough room to have that show.
14. Select your burn tool. Put the range on Highlights and set the Exposure to 25%. Make sure you have a big, soft brush to use.
15. Within the selection, go over the bottom half of the text once. Any more doesn't look as subtle.
16. This, again, is optional. Adding the shine is very easy! Make a new layer and put it at the top of the layer list.
17. While holding CTRL, click on the original layer's picture.
18. This is where it gets tricky - get your elliptical marquee tool and while holding ALT, select the section that you want to have the shine. If you go from the bottom to the top, you'll select the top and that will be filled white. If you go top to bottom, you'll add a shadow so you fill it black.
19. Fill it with white and hit CTRL+D to deselect.
20. Go over to the layer opacity and set it to 30%. This is what looks the best, but if you want more or less, get creative!
21. You're basically done! If you had a background (I use them to see better), remove it and save it as a png. Open the png. Select the text and open a new template. It will be the perfect size. Save it and you're done!
