I've been thinking and working on a minecraft story about the fictional character Herobrine, that basically flips the typical Herobrine story on its head. This story depicts Herobrine as a shy, misunderstood, young, man, who is forced by the circumstances to burn down whole villages and smile coldly while doing it. He hates doing it and he himself is terrified by what he can do, but he has to continue or he'll lose his freedom and innocent lives (including that of his best friend) will be lost. The story was also going to be written from different view points like: Steve (his brother), and possibly: Zombenny (zombie and Herobrine's best friend).
This story has been coming along nicely, but I'm still limited by the fact that it's minecraft based and by what the community expects in a Herobrine story. If I de-minecrafted it, I'd get to make my own rules and have better control over the story, and I'd get to abandon Herobrine and replace him with a young mage (who'd still have the eye thing, because that becomes important in the story).
I'm on the edge, I think I will de-minecraft it, but part of the story's effect is that you expect for Herobrine to be a twisted monster, and when he isn't it could change people's prospective on this community icon.
Could you please give me your opinion.

Interesting, a Herobrine story that deviates from the formula and portrays him as a sympathetic character. Could damn well work.
You still have to have to very loosest links to minecraft in your story in order to post it here. A rule in the Minefic help thread that some still enforce.
Don't fear the community's expectations. People here love different types of stories. Just look at Clockwork Archives or End. They really deviate from the Minefic formulas. Hell, if you want an example of how to portray Herobrine differently, look at my own Fall and a Rise and Immortus' Lord of Shadows.
In Immortus' Herobrine is merely a servant of the main bad guy, Skiamance. He takes on the role of the restrained advisor as opposed to the out of control warlord. People bloody loved him in that story.
(Sorry to do a bit of advertising/self-congratulating) In FAAR Herobrine is Jeb's caring uncle who is in charge of Mojang's (The True Court's) armies. He is restrained and wise, and uses his powers sparingly. Hell, he's actually got a sort of split-personality thing going on between his physical side and his (more traditional) spiritual side. In fact, the myths about Herobrine being evil and ghostly came from the wandering of this spiritual side, mixed with propaganda from Notch (I bash Mojang a lot in my story :P).
In fact, both mine and Immortus' stories barely make contact with the MC world, outside of a few creatures from within the world, the working in of certain game functions (spawners in LoS, respawning in FAAR) and of course references to the game's creators.
So, before you totally de-minecraft the story, consider how it can still be connected whilst following your own rules. It would be a shame to lose you and this story Tabbs.

Like fantasy? Like Minecraft? Check out a blend of the two here! Fall and a Rise: A Vanillacraft Tale!
Also, note that you don't have to stick by the whole "everything is blocks" logic of MC either. Loads of the great stories on here avoid blocks in their story. I *****-foot around ever mentioning how people build things or how mining works. Mister Blak actually developed an ingenious element in My Wonderful Apprenticeship, the landstriders. These are an elite sect of kind-of wizards with the abilities of the average RL MC avatar and beyond. The rest of the would-be players are just normal human beings.

This portrayal of Herobrine is pretty similar to my own. Therefore I want to read it because according to smart people, humans are attracted to the familiar. But as long as you have some vaguely Minecraft-ish elements in your story, I say you should go for it.
P.S. I voted cheese. Does that make me a horrible person?

Kmandy while I didn't stick to the whole "everything is blocks" logic, thanks for your nice feedback , I didn't expect to get many replies here so I've only just checked this thread. I decided when I posted in a role play where I was using him as a character, and was reminded of what made my version of Herobrine different, so I decided not to de-minecraft my story since I had fallen in love (not literally) with my character.
Cindyisadog voting "Cheese!!!!!!" doesn't make you a bad person, I like putting in funny options like that , in fact I'm going to vote for cheese two.
After this, I'm certainly looking forward to posting Hate, Lies, and Hero-eyes, my story, here.
PS. Just thought you might find it interesting, I based Herobrine's personality on my own, because I find it easier to write about a character who'd do similar things to what I would do in that situation.
