I have a theory that Minecraft isn't in the past (as most believe) but it may be in the future. Think about it. Minecraft takes place after a Nuclear Apocolypse. This would explain why there are monsters everywhere. The entire population of the Earth (except for a few survivors) was killed and mutated in the apocalypse. The player was in a coma for about a century, when he/she awoke. The survivors' descendants (The Villagers) went and attempted to restart the world, restoring nature and starting little villages. The people who were killed were mutated from the Nuclear Waste, thus being resurrected into living corpses, the Zombies and Skeletons. Plants were mutated in a huge explosion, which created the Creepers. The remaining bugs and arachnids were mutated, creating giant Spiders and Silverfish. You wake up with no recollection of your past. You have one instinct, and that is to survive. You invent basic contraptions, such as pistons and jukeboxes, and you explore the world around you. The zombies and skeletons have no recollection of their past, either, and loop through their old habits from the war that caused a Nuclear Apocolypse, seeing you as the enemy.

Well, in a poll, 81% of people were in favor of nuking the Middle East. And one of the flaws of democracy is that the majority rule, even if the majority is not right. So the day might come that America nukes the Middle East into oblivion and starts a nuclear war that makes humans extinct.
