I had always lived in the city and occasionally went to the state parks and hiked. I was a bit scared. The only thing comforting me was the scenic landscape. There were all kinds of trees. I was never good at naming species. I saw what I thought was birch. I don't know though. I always mix it up with aspens. I wish my dad was here. He always knows his species.
As I was walking around I saw a few stones on the ground. I picked a few up and remembered one of the few things I actually learned in boy scouts. I knocked a few stones together and created a shape resembling a shovel head. I think I am ready for a more complicated shape. I tried knapping an axe head. Oh no! I chipped away a big section that was needed to make an axe head. I threw the rock to the ground and started on a new one. I successfully created another axe head that actually worked! Realizing that I was going to need a knife to cut anything in my way. I went back to knapping. Breaking a stone in half and sharpening the sides allowed me to create two blades.
I had the heads but I still needed to attach them to something. The beach nearby had some sticks and driftwood that had gotten stuck in the sand. I picked up a bunch of the sticks and made tools and went out looking for something else I may need to survive. Food was becoming a bit of an issue. My stomach felt empty. I went out looking for something to eat. I immediately saw some bushes under a strand of trees nearby. I assumed the bushes produced berries so I pulled them out of the ground and kept them for later. Once I knew I had food covered (sorta) I decided I would put my new axe to use. I chopped down a tree and picked up the logs. It was hickory. Good to know. I inspected the axe and noticed that it was slightly damaged. I made a quick note in my head about tools getting damaged.
Walking along and picking up stones and sticks I saw a rock, but it had an unusual brownish color to it. I picked it up and determined that the rock had traces of copper in it. I don't know much about geology but I think that this means there is copper deep below the surface. I didn't have anything on me to mark the spot with so I just left it. I started walking again and heard a sound I had never heard before. It sounded like a bird but I had no idea. After searching the area I found the source. The bird-like animal had strange spots on it's orange feathers. I hit it a few times expecting it to die. I wasn't the kind of guy to kill an animal, but I was really feeling hungry now and I needed the food. The bird started fleeing. I knew I couldn't let that happen so I pulled out my stone axe and chopped off the bird's head. I scavenged the remains and found a chunk of meat, a few bones, and feathers. I am guessing that the feathers will be useful for fletching arrows or something. I had no idea how long I would be there, but I knew I had to prepare for the worst.
