Hmm, the most recent previous post was from 2015. Sorry for the necropost here, but this seemed the most appropriate place for my post. Hi everyone, I've been thinking about this idea for a Minecraft fanfic for a while now, and I thought I might put the premise of my story out there, to see what people think, and to maybe get some feedback and advice before I even begin writing it. This is what I've come up with so far...
This fanfic is about an accidentally immortal character, similar to Douglas Adams' creation of Bowerick Wowbagger (aka "Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged🔗") from the novel "Life, the Universe and Everything" in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series, who is said to have attained immortality ... 'due to an accident with "an irrational particle accelerator, a liquid lunch, and a pair of rubber bands"'. The protagonist in my fanfic will have had some equally implausible accident which rendered them immortal. The reality of this particular form of immortality doesn't preclude death though, but it includes an automatic and immediate reincarnation, with full memory of all past lives.
In my fanfic, unlike Adams' Wowbagger, my main character's objective is to communicate with the two Beings who are represented in the End Poem🔗 from Minecraft, as written by Julian Gough. My lead character will travel to many different worlds, survive, tame, and colonise them, all in the hope of finding a working End Portal🔗. The underlying theory is that one of these End Portals, somewhere in the Universe, will accidentally allow the lead character to converse and interact directly with the two Beings from the End Poem, essentially allowing the lead character to join with them, as a fellow overseer of the whole Universe. This seems like a much better goal for an accidental immortal, rather than aspiring to insult everyone in the Universe!
The protagonist in my fanfic will document their adventures on each new planet they visit. There will also be some mention of the mode of transport between the worlds, and explanations for the recurring theme of the denizens of these worlds: the spread of Zombies, Creepers, Ghasts, Blazes, etc on all planets visited by the protagonist.
So there it is. What do you think? Should I spend time writing this out in full? If I did, do you think you would read it? At present, that is all there is. I don't have a name for my protagonist, or even a gender. I don't even have a working title! From my perspective, these things are fairly immaterial, and secondary to the plot. The randomness of the accidental nature of becoming immortal means that, if it is going to happen again to someone at all (and Adams states that the event is so unlikely that "no-one has been able to replicate [it] without ending up looking rather silly or dead, or both"); it could happen to anyone, whether they be a traditional "hero-like" male character, or a six-year old Asian girl who still plays with her Mame Momoko dolls. I guess this goes against many of the basics of writing fanfics, which commonly see the author themselves thrust into the game universe, either literally or figuratively. The fanfics I have written in other fandoms in the past are often more of a crossover / mashup like this one is intended to be, rather than a self-insert. Any ideas, comments, feedback would be most welcome, thanks.
In a further idea for my Minecraft fanfic, I'll be ignoring anything to do with "blocks" and the cube-like interface of the game, and in fact the gaming interface itself. I know that the "I fell into the screen and became part of the game world" is a common trope for Minecraft fanfics, but I'm intending to avoid it in my stories, focusing more on the broader concepts (multiple worlds, survival, common mobs and monsters, etc) rather than the irrelevant "fact" that this is all just a game. 😄
Hi, I'm Augur and I'm from New Zealand (NZ). Just call me "Augur". I'm an older person playing Minecraft Xbox 360 Legacy Console Edition without Xbox Gold (no online gaming, sorry), so please don't hate on the old. 😄
