Firstly, I'd like to say i'm sorry if this is a duplicate post, but I looked around for others and I searched with no results.
When I create a survival world I like to think of a backstory of how my player got there and why I am the only person left on the world (minus the villagers). In my opinion it creates more purpose to why you're playing and what you do. Also the backstory adds more excitment to the atmosphere, and your builds.
For example, I like to think my player woke up at spawn with no recollection of his/her past. So you explore your first day trying to find out where you are why you're there. Then when night comes you see the zombies and realize that the population was somehow turned into these terrifying beings that only seek to turn you into a walker. You see the skeletons and think they must be creatures who used to live deep underground but found a way to the surface and have the darkest of intentions. Some how the common spider was mutated into this massive abomination. And the Silent green ones, they are to be feared the most. For the unweary, they are the end. And lastly, the otherworld beings that vanish and reappear in different locations, all you know is that they most be removed on sight, for they do not belong.
Now the purpose,
So after the first night you realize that something went horrible wrong on this world and things are not how they once were. You see evidence in the abandoned structures throughout the world. And the small remanant of the population that live huddled together constantly besieged by the undead. With the rising of the sun it dawns on you that your purpose on this world is to rebuild. To protect whats left of the pitiful, scattered population(villagers). And Lastly to destory the undead root and branch. You set out building your walls strong to withstand the endless waves of undead, and your builds stand as flame in a dark world. And all resources gathered go towards your distant goal. Making armor, weapons, death machines, auto farms for the refugees you bring in. One day you will throw off this darkness and all will be quiet and peaceful again.
So that's kind of my backstory, I was wondering if anyone else does this kind of roleplay? What kind of story do you use or what can you think up?
In regards to your story, it's pretty interesting! I think one important thing is to make it challenging for your character. You don't want it to be too linear in how your character just becomes more and more powerful. Perhaps it'd make it interesting to throw in some challenges or major setbacks. xD
Currently, I've been trying to add a backstory to my new world. Basically where I'm at is that my character currently fled the sack of his old village and is fleeing from the chaos when eventually he stumbles upon the footsteps of a mountain shrine and collapses. Eventually he'll be given a second chance at life by the god of the shrine to work with other refugees in establishing a new place to live and to document the small slice-of-life stories that go on. You can find more info in my signature about this but it's a very much work in progress,
Good luck!

I definitely agree that challenge makes it more exciting and enjoyable!
I read the prolouge of flight into the night! I that's exactly what I had in mind for a backstory. Great work on writing that, I am going to read the rest of the story when I get a chance.
I like to think that there was a nuclear war (like Adventure time) and that all the hostile mobs are actually mutants
I think that's an excellent backstory! It would certainly explain a lot.
Another backstory I like to entertain is that you were once powerful and able to travel between universers at will but were brought low by a mighty enemy. You managed to escape and are stuck on this long forgotten world with the burning passion to rebuild to your former glory.
I do exactly the same thing. I make a lot of different survival maps and each one is like a different dimension that my character travels through on his search for his home world. Dimensional travel is exhausting and disorienting making the first day about trying to remember who you are and why you are here.

That's actually a pretty cool backstory, how long do you generally spend on a survival world? And what makes you decided when a world is complete?
